Highlights: Wanderers let another win go

By Lou Lando / Roar Guru

For the second week in a row the Western Sydney Wanderers have let two points slip after once again giving up what looked like a comfortable lead against an improved and gutsy Central Coast Mariners at Spotless Stadium.

» Re-live all the action with our live blog

A defensive howler by Wanderers centre back Robbie Cornthwaite gifted the Mariners Adam Berry a tap-in equaliser in the 61st minute against the run of play, cancelling out Brendon Santalab’s second-minute opener.

In fact, the Wanderers were lucky they didn’t go behind late in the game when Wanderers full back Jack Clisby handled the ball when trying to block a Trent Buhagiar cross much to Mariners’ coach Paul Okon’s disgust on the sidelines.

It would have been a frustrating night again for Wanderers’ coach Tony Popovic after his team’s bright start. They certainly didn’t lack chances, but their finishing was poor at times, Mitch Nichols the biggest culprit missing at least three very gettable chances.

Both teams had their moments in the first half and the Mariners would have been happy with their efforts. Fabio Ferreira in particular was very creative for the Mariners causing Wanderers defenders all sorts of problems with his runs into the box.

The Wanderers would have been happy with some nice touches on the ball but Argentine debutant Nico Martinez and the continued good form of Japanese recruit Jumpei Kusukami, although he didn’t make the most of his chances.

The second half saw the Wanderers control the first 15 minutes and they looked they looked comfortable until the Cornthwaite howler against the run of play sent shockwaves through Spotless Stadium.

In fact from that point on the Mariners wrestled the game back into their control and had the better chances late. The Wanderers seemed to have lost their way and were lucky not to concede a second.

Okon would have been proud of his team’s effort and the fact that his team is showing some improvement and earned a point in a difficult stadium to play. For Popovic, whilst there are glimpses of what his side is capable of, consistency for 90 minutes is what is lacking at the moment and not taking advantage of several chances.

I think it's more because of this idea that they'd get 30k a game if the capacity allowed at Parramatta. Turns out that idea was pretty much rubbish.

I've been impressed as well. As for his comments, really I think they're aimed at his players - it's been a poor environment for a couple of years and the worst case for him is if belief evaporates in the current squad before he can effect real change. So he's making rather odd comments (we were the better side, the decisions are going against us etc) that will resonate with the players plus have the effect of drawing attention away from players to himself which is not a bad thing. I though Mariners had a decent squad last year just a very, very poor coach. This year the squads still not bad, let's hope the coach can walk his talk because away from home they've drawn with two of the pre-season title favourites - what might they do with some self belief and confidence behind them?

He was unsighted. I wasn't. It was handball. I mean, he couldn't have dons much about it. But yeah. Very lucky.

I recon Clisbys was a handball too, can only assume the ref was unsighted? Last weeks one Okon referred to was when the ball hit DeVere's arm which was across his chest, without doubt accidental (why would he deliberatly hand the ball when his chest was next in line?) and therefore not handball by the very definition of the rule - unless Okon would like a special set of rules made up for Mariners?

AZ Agree entirely on the pressure once the new stadium is up and running, 14.5k in a 30k stadium will look poor. I also think it's about time clubs started publishing details of their membership base - I've no doubt the majority stcwanderers are 13/5/3 game members but I recon when Roar hit 12,800 a couple of years back about a third if those were stadium members of which maybe 3-400 would go to an occasional Roar game.

well i didnt watch the brisbane game so i dont know anything about that hand ball, but if clisby's wasn't a handball, nothing ever will be. P.S. thanks for taking clisby off our hands, if you want, we have an experienced left full back if you want him aswell

All 10 teams are capable of making the top 6. That is the beauty of the A-League.

WSW attendances at their first two games at Spotless around the A-League average of the past 4 seasons, which sounds about right.

A large portion are season ticket holders. I know we had it capped at 16k for a couple of seasons. I would be surprised if it dropped below 15k. So yeah it's somewhere around that 16k mark. That means every week there are at least 5-6k members not turning up. The club doesn't care either. The money is in the bank for them. The club has put very little effort into growing the fan base since season 1. Actually they've become quite complacent with the current fanbase too. That's been reflected in the stagnation of the figures. There's no incentive for them to penalise those who don't attend. But rather there needs to be rewards for attending. But that's a little sad isn't it? That you need to be rewarded for going to see your team play? I think once the new stadium is running, there will be renewed pressure to grow the fanbase.

Marron The attendance was about right imo and is probably similar to the WSW/Mariners average over the last five seasons at Pirtek. Last seasons total average was 14.5k so it's not unreasonable that some crowds will be a couple of thousand below that, like last night. And although Wanderers have nearly 19k in members not all of those will be for 13 game packs - how many of those will be supporter/junior/baby memberships that don't offer any match day admission? plus there's an out-of-Towner that only gives access to one game. So you can subtract a few hundred of the membership total for that as they won't necessarily go to (all/any) games? then how many people are on the three/five game membership packs and wouldn't choose CCM as a game? (I'd say a few thousand), and then we get to the grey areas of how many stadium memberships are included in that 19k? And how many are corporate memberships - sponsors and box holders get a "membership" as well so if you hire a box at spotless or ANZ you'll get 10-15 memberships albeit for that one game; 100 boxes in a season = 1,000+ members most of which go to one game. The bottom line is the membership number is not as straightforward as it seems and there isn't a direct correlation between membership and average attendance e.g. last season: WSW: 18k members/14.3k average Roar: 5k members/13.5k average Wanderers, just like Sydney and Roar, still have a lot of work to do to build crowds. All three clubs could and should be averaging 20k+ but none of them are; and while derby matches boost attendances it's the rest of the games that need attention

Wow, I had no idea about the ticketing situation Marron. Having season passes I don't go looking unless I have guests staying with us. There were swathes of empty seats in almost every part of the ground last night. Many of us don't like the precinct irrespective of the event. It is a soulless place. Dooleys at Lidcombe was enjoying a fair trade from WSW fans last Sunday but the local pubs are not up to much. We went to Strathfield last night. The pub is better and plenty of restaurants to choose from for a pre match meal. Trouble is you have to go back to Lidcombe to catch a train to Olympic Park except on the really big games at ANZ. We caught a direct train heading to Penrith from Olympic Park last night which was quite pleasing as the route march along platform 9 3/4 (sorry I mean 0) is tedious to say the least. It isn't going to be the happiest of times and on field performances like that won't help matters. Oh well, off to Perth next weekend to sample NIB and then back for a trip to Etihad. right now, I'm wondering why but then I remember, away games are nearly always more fun irrespective of results!

Well summed up buddy on the game. I've never been comfortable with the way we attack - fluency is rare, the wrong options chosen repeatedly... who's our attacking coach again? It's like we're scared of the goal to the extent we can't even be practising shooting.... I'm reminded of those old English coaches who didn't let their charges train with balls so they'd be hungry for it on game day. A plan b would be nice too. As for the venue. Train situation heading west is pretty awful. Views last week were awful. Security is insisting on bay allocations. The lawn bar is rubbish and it's the only option on the precinct pre game and they kick you out well before time. I wonder how many people are already not bothered with the place. If there were only a thousand more people there last week I'll eat my hat though, something went on there. It was a very poor turnout last night. Time for the club to turn the screws with their buy back scheme I think. Not putting them up plus non attendance should reduce priority for membership. You could only purchase single tickets and it was half full... plenty not right.

I thought Adelaide were unfortunate not to take a point on Friday night. They are another team with quite an injury list but are still competitive and whilst they do not look to have the same strength as last season, there are signs that they will improve a great deal as they recover from the injuries. Harsh penalty decision, struck the post and crossbar and it appeared MC were pleased to hear the final whistle.

Great point Swanny. Of course they can be better if players get healthy.

The jets can make the 6th spot . They have 7 players out injured at the moment . I expect they will be solid but not spectacular and surprise a few people .

I agree with the 4 teams. However, Adelaide United does not look very well ,has only 1 point in 4 games. All the games was tied, but this is very poor gathering of points .What do you think?
