Who should make the Kangaroos' team to play the Kiwis in Coventry?

By Tim / Roar Rookie

What should be the Kangaroos line-up next week against the Kiwis in Coventry?

The team that took on Scotland was a very strong team, winning by 54-12 after bursting out of the blocks. Players like James Maloney and Matt Moylan – new to the Kangaroos set up – were impressive, but such is the strength of the World Champions that the two may not have another game this tournament.

My Kangaroos team for next week is a mix of some old, some new and plenty of quality.

1. Matt Moylan
2. Josh Mansour
3. Greg Inglis
4. Darius Boyd
5. Valentine Holmes
6. Johnathan Thurston
7. Cooper Cronk
8. Matt Scott
9. Cameron Smith (c)
10. Aaron Woods
11. Boyd Cordner
12. Matt Gillett
13. Jake Trbojevic

14. Michael Morgan
15. Shannon Boyd
16. Tyson Frizell
17. Trent Merrin

You cant leave Moylan out of the team after his performance against Scotland. Darius Boyd is at centre because he has played there before and has shown that he has skills suitable to play anywhere in the backline.

There is no room for Dave Klemmer and Sam Thaiday, despite their good efforts previously for the Aussies. Maloney was outstanding on debut, however there is no room for him in this team.

If Australia win this match then for the England game I would rest Cooper Cronk, shift Maloney to five-eighth and Thurston to halfback.

Tell us what your team is in the comments for next week’s game against the Kiwis! What do you think Roarers? Should selectors go for something tried and tested, or should we see some new faces?

I've seen Klemmer a couple of times at Suncorp. His impacts really count. He's made for rep football off the bench.

It was good to see Shaun Johnson back to somewhere near his best. He misses his mates Foran and Vatuvei but his fifth tackle kicks were back to their best. Any forward pack that has Tapou and Blair on the bench has got to be good. Still, I reckon England a little unlucky last week. Ryan Hall was sweating on a last pass twice when their left side centre (?) dropped it cold. Intercept tries are always unlucky and NZ were using ...."professional" tactics when England was finishing strongly and a penalty would've put them ahead. NZ best team on day. I am really looking forward to this test and I'm saying OZ by a classic 4 points. 16 - 12.

Hey - that's pretty much my team. I don't rate Wood either, in fact I'm scratching my head why anyone does? Still, if Mal picks him he must be good. Boyd and Klemmer are must haves, huge men and will wear down any defence. Sam is a rock at representative level and I am sure Meninga wants him there for the 2017 World Cup.

1. Boyd 2.Mansour 3 Inglis 4 O'Neil 5 Holmes 6 Thurston 7 Cronk 8 Scott 9. Smith 10 Boyd 11 Cordner 12 Thaiday 13 Merrin 14 Morgan 15 Frizell 16 Gillett 17 Klemmer I can't for the life of me see why anyone rates Woods. The last three tests he played for the Kangaroos were all lost. He doesn't play and they win the next two. I have only seen him play one good rep game, SOO Game 2 2015. That's it. Dugan is even worse and shouldn't even really get a Blues jersey. Much better to stick with a winning combo from Perth. I don't reckon the Kiwis like facing Boyd and Klemmer in rotation. Who would. Moylan is a superb talent. I can't find space for him here unless he goes to centre in place of the hapless Dugan. Justin O'Neil is a more orthodox choice as he had a solid Origin series and has a club combination with JT. Frizell is dynamic player off the bench and Gillett is a proven top grade performer. I actually like Ferguson and feel Holmes only just shades him. I could live with Moylan replacing Morgan. Trbojevic is a star of the future but there's no way he could force his way into the top 17 now.

Gees Tim, bit of a nsw slant on that side, Moylan is promising with a big future but he only starred against Scotland, after all. Boyd is the incumbent and has done nothing wrong so that's bad luck for Matt. Plenty of good players have had to wait for their opportunity so he's no different.Dugan, despite his inability to pass also deserves to hold his centre spot, although I agree with your choice of wingers. Trbojevic ahead of Frizell, another selection based on potential, not performance. Frizzell & Merrin deserve that spot ahead of him at this stage of their careers. Again, Jake T looked OK against a tiring Scottish defence, not as big a test as the kiwi pack if he was a starting lock forward.

Boyd in the centres? He hasn't played there in about 8 years, and will be wasted. Put him at fullback and leave Dugan at centre. Sorry Moylan, but playing well against minnows does not shed your overrated tag

Fair enough, it's all opinion. In defence of Klemmer he takes the tough hit ups and also makes a lot of metres after initial contact. He doesn't send defenders scattering like nine pins like say Taumalolo but who does? His metres, avg metres per run and runs/metres per minute are very good even when people say he's had a quiet game. Against him is that he needs to bring a bit of variety into his game. His runs are always gun barrel straight with no footwork or swerve and he rarely offloads. I think he's done enough in the two tests to keep his spot though.

Morgan isn't in his best form but I don't think he warrants being dropped either. Moylan could offer something from the bench but it will be very different to Morgan. Moylan won't be able to defend in or near the middle like Morgan and he'll be in a ball playing role as opposed to running. Moylan's very good. I was reasonably impressed with his origin game at 5/8 and he played well against the Scots but he's on a journey in rep footy.

Ferguson played 60 games for the Raiders in the centres - he was only moved to FB for the Roosters when RTS was injured. He's actually pretty good in defence and was a gun in attack for the Raiders in the centres.

I've the gut feeling that the winner will score more points than their opposition. I don't know, it's just a feeling I have :)

I still have a gut feeling that NZ will rise to the occasion in this tournament, defeating the Roos when it really counts. They have had a proper hit out v England while we got a softy v Scotland and as such will be rusty and subconsciously complacent. NZ by 12 points.

I'm with you Baz. I have no idea why the clamour for Boyd to play anywhere but FB. He has been outstanding in Origin and at Test level. I also agree with O'Neill on the right. He is very underrated . I am not adverse to having Moylan on the bench instead of Morgs. I love Morgan as a player but he has been out of sorts all year. His hands are letting him down and his confidence is not what it should be. Moylan oozes confidence.

Sorry 4000. I have two backward states mixed up. Couldn't resist that one. Meninga stood on the steps of court after his brother was sentenced and supported him. Twenty years later he stood on the steps of court again and said he supported him when his brother was sent down again for breaching his parole. Meninga didn't write an innocuous meme on his wrist, he stood in front of TV cameras and spoke about it. Fifita did not at any time say he condoned the actions of a young drunken grub. He was asked by this kids parents to help the kid overcome some mental health issues and perhaps stop some jailhouse bullying. He wasn't warned by police. He was told that visiting a criminal in gaol mor than three times in a month is now an offence under consorting laws. Fifita has done nothing wrong. So his position is entirely different to Meninga's. So the facts don't get in the way of my story. can't speak for your's though. Andrew is a special bloke with a heightened sense of right and wrong. He reacted to perceived injustices. He as moderated his behaviour as can be seen in the last half of the premiership. I want Andrew to be passionate about the game and about his team mates and friends. We need more Andrews and less bland in our game.

1. Darius Boyd - He is in great form and you dont tinker with a successful combination. 2. Valentine Holmes - Great young player who shone in Perth and I rate him higher than any other option 3. Justin O'Niell - Really didnt shine against Scotland but should combine well with Holmes 4. Greg Inglis - In pretty good form at centre for the Rabbitohs and he always shows up in big games 5. Josh Mansour - Picks up the metres when required and takes a lot of early tackle runs up against it, also been in good form. 6. Jonathon Thurston - Obviously 7. Cooper Cronk - See Thurston 8. Matt Scott - He really should be in offseason surgery but somehow keeps showing up 9. Cameron Smith - Greatest Hooker in tge game and not much competition and see Cronk 10. David Klemmer - Brings physicality to the attack but needs to step up in defense 11. Boyd Cordner - Always there in defense and runs solid lines in attack, doesn't get the credit he deserves 12. Matt Gillet - Defensive concerns but it comes with the amount of tackles he attempts. Above average attack. 13. Trent Merrin - Was a constant damger against Scotland and solid against NZ. 14. Michael Morgan - Just retains his bench spot but needs to step up and provide more impact off the bench. His hands have let him down recently. 15. Tyson Frizell - Lucky to not be suspended but outside of that he has been very good, better than his Dragons form 16. Shannon Boyd - Impact off the bench to counteract NZs big bench 17. Sam Thaiday - Slamming Sam has been well off in attack but still ran over 100m against Scotland, Made 34 tackles for no misses as the only forward to play the full 80 against Scotland. 18. Aaron Woods - I dont rate him but he still manages to get the job done

He wasn't fit for the lead up training or the first match. He would be fit now.

Maybe I should've expanded and said I (personally) don't think that Klemmer does enough given the size of him. I don't think he causes enough hassle of the defensive line to draw more defenders in giving the flanks more space to work with.
