Juventus surprisingly dismantled by inspired Genoa

Serie A leaders Juventus lost 3-1 to a Genoa outfit that was keen to capitalise on defensive errors and keep the league title race open.

It was Atletico Madrid’s manager Diego Simeone’s son Giovanni Simeone who inflicted the damage upon the Bianconeri by scoring a double within 13 minutes of the game. It only took three minutes for Genoa to get on the scoresheet from Argentine striker Giovanni Simeone easily dribbling past the unfocused Juventus wall and shooting the ball between the posts after Buffon managed to save three fired shots.

Ten minutes later Simeone struck a double to extend the lead at 2-0. La Vecchia Signora was absolutely stunned once again by Genoa punishing the sleepy defensive work of Alex Sandro which allowed Serbian winger Darko Lazović to easily cross the ball to Simeone who would convert with a powerful header.

In the 29th minute, it couldn’t get any worse for Juve defender Alex Sandro who splashed the ball into his own net by attempting to clear a Luca Rigoni shot. 3-0 inside 30 minutes was like a dream for I Rossoblu and a nightmare disaster for Juventus.

The second half wasn’t about goals galore as Genoa were settling down for the emphatic 3-0 scoreline but it was until the 82nd minute that Juventus would grab one goal back to make the scoreline 3-1 and less embarrassing. The goal came from a Miralem Pjanic world-class free kick that swerved past goalkeeper Mattia Perin.

The Bosnian midfielder always manages to make free kicks look so simple but this time around it was too little too late for Juve to come back and rescue precious points.

This fixture provided an upset that could see the Scudetto title race take a different toll and crown a different champion. Juventus are still sitting on the table at first position with 33 points but this loss has opened the door for fellow rivals like Roma and AC Milan who both sit second and third on 29 points.

With this win, Genoa has pushed themselves up to ninth place with one game in hand.

Now Brazilian defender Dani Alves has managed to walk out of this game with a fractured fibula and add further stress to the Juventus backline. However, Massimiliano Allegri’s men should lift their heads high as Argentine striker Paula Dybala is expected to come back from injury ready to play the in-form Atalanta next weekend.

Milan have been the biggest suprise and all credit needs to be given to Montella this season. Not competing in Europe has helped their cause. But if either Suso or Bonaventura were to be out for a period of time, I dont think they have the depth of quality. Hopefully they can further strenghten over January and give it a good crack. I like Roma but just don't have the consistency. Will be strenghtened with the return of Mario Rui. Need to look to bring another wing back and back up striker to Dzeko. Napoli similar to Roma re consistency. Havn't recovered since Milik went down with his knee injury and Gabbiadini has failed to take his opportunity which had led them to revert to Mertens as that false 9. Talks of them bringing in Pavoletti from Genoa or Muriel from Samp in Jan. I think will see a bit of a resurgence from Inter which should see them push for a European spot. I think they desperately need to strenthen the defence. In particular a new CB to partner Miranda and another wingback (hopefully look at Darmian from Man U)

Very true Sandy, some close rivals of Juve don't have the long consistent run like the Serie A champions. Napoli were almost there last season but now are not getting over that Higuain transfer and that explains their odd performance. Inter Milan have just spent too much money and some times the bond between players and how well the team gels together is crucial. AC Milan are performing better than Inter so far this season because of youth development that AC Milan have utilised so well.

Roma are looking great at the moment. If they just stay consistent with winning those important games like the one they lost to Atalanta 2-1 2 weeks ago then expect to see Roma win the Serie A title. Remember AC Milan will be your biggest competitor to fight against Juventus.

Hopefully Roma can get the last few pieces to our squad to end this Juve run.

Unfortunately the other Seria A teams dont have the level of consistency and squad depth to compete with Juve. Hoping the new Chinese owners at both Milan clubs spend big
