Vics hit back at Maxwell after "me, me, me" comments

By News / Wire

Glenn Maxwell should pull his head in and make some runs instead of taking potshots at his captain, Victorian teammate Rob Quiney says.

Maxwell took aim at captain Matthew Wade this week after being placed below the Test wicketkeeper in the Bushrangers’ batting order.

The explosive all-rounder, who was controversially dropped for Victoria’s Sheffield Shield opener, batted at No.6 in matches against NSW and Queensland last month.

“That’s probably a little bit painful at times,” Maxwell said.

“I think probably batting below the wicketkeeper is also a bit painful as well. I think the wicketkeeper should be batting at seven unless you’re trying to squeeze an extra bowler into your line-up.”

Asked why he thought Wade was coming in ahead of him, Maxwell replied: “I think when you’re captain, you choose the batting order”.

But Bushrangers veteran Quiney, who is yet to play in the Shield this summer, said Maxwell was in no position to have a go at his teammates.

“I think he just needs to lip it and just make some runs,” Quiney told EON Sports radio on Friday.

“Victoria are flying at the moment, but he’s not setting the world on fire himself. He’s actually only batted at six twice so I don’t know where this has come from.

“It’s good that he’s honest, unfortunately it’s probably not the greatest attitude to have I reckon.”

Victoria opener Marcus Harris backed Wade, saying the side’s unbeaten Shield record this summer showed he was making the right choices.

Victorian cricket great Darren Berry suggested Wade may have placed himself higher in the order to boost his own Test selection chances.

But that didn’t excuse Maxwell’s comments, particularly considering the depth of Victoria’s batting lineup.

“That’s me, me, me stuff isn’t it?,” Berry told SEN Breakfast.

“Cameron White’s been batting behind him at seven. (He) didn’t come out and criticise Matthew Wade. You just don’t do it.”

Maxwell is set to return to the Australian one-day line-up on Sunday at the SCG for the start of their three-game series against New Zealand.

Seriously? There are 10-20 better batsmen around.

I think you, and many others, are over analyzing this. Maxwell just said what was on his mind. As a professional, he should be able to control himself and back his captains decisions. Sure, we all agree it is a bit rich Wade batting himself above both Maxi and White, but that is a captains perogative, and they are winning. What erks me is that Maxwell is suggesting that batting at 6 has somehow limited his ability to make runs. If he was in form, he could make runs wherever he was batting. Just look at White. Maxi should stop mouthing off and let his bat do the talking as the saying goes.

Brett he's more than welcome to head over to Perth I'd love to see Maxwell in the Warriors lineup. I think NSW would have been a good fit for him though particularly with the SCG offering plenty of assistance to spinners these days, the Blues would love a genuine top 6 batsman who also bowls decent spin.

i think it was more a case of the selectors insisting he bats higher with the move in mind

Reckon there's two things at play here Ronan: 1. Maxwell is wanting to highlight how despite their season thus far, the Vics dressing room is far from rosy, and 2. Maxwell has realised that he's getting nowhere in keeping his discussions behind close doors, so he's gone public The bonus now will be if/when his spot in the Vics squad becomes untenable, he'll get his move interstate. And in the meantime, fie other states have already made contact..

There was talk of Wade being selected as a batsman with Nevill still in the side. No doubt this encouraged him to list himself up the order

the aside to this is the Australian selectors Did they ask Wade to bat higher with the thought of replacing Nevill

agreed. I don't see Maxwell carrying on like Wade in matches. Apparently Wade is there because he is a "talker". That is all great and it is good to have somebody boost the team but he talks absolute garbage. Sadly he is in the Aussie team now because they won the last test. He makes the Australian Team look like bogans. Can we just encourage another keeper to talk more without the rubbish? Also promoting himself above Maxwell is mindboggling.

Agreed. Berry and Wade are two of the most unlikeable characters in cricket. Astounding anybody rates their opinions.

I forgot who made the suggestion on here, but White wouldn't be the worst selection for the Indian tour. In fabulous form and one of the few who can play spin well

The man who ought be annoyed is White. Maxwell has done 2/5 of FA with the bat this year. Perhaps if he actually did something with his talent he'd move up the order, failing which no one should have any sympathy for him, barring the one eyed Wade haters who populate this forum.

Yeah, that order should be reversed.

Wade should never be placing himself above both White and Maxwell in the Shield batting order. It's hard not to think he's taking advantage of his position as Vic captain to push himself up the order. I'm not surprised Maxwell is pissed - First Victoria blocked his transfer to NSW, then they banned him from the 1st Shield game for no good reason, now he's been forced to bat below the keeper.

I wouldn't be surprised if Maxi walks out on Victoria once the BBL is over. But it is a strange batting order with: 5. Wade 6. Maxwell 7. White. I reckon something happened in the Victorian camp during the off season, which has prompted Maxi to switch states.

Yes, Maxi is tooting his own horn but he has always batted for the team first, for example willing to throw his wicket away batting at 3 in search of a declaration. Meanwhile Wade bats himself at 5, just high enough to get good opportunities but low enough to usually avoid the new ball.

Fancy quoting Berry and Quiney. Berry is a great Victorian B/S artist. Totally over rated keeper and really mostly a loud mouth like Wade. Cameron White from last century is holding the Victorian cricket team together and the likes of Quiney played a test when about 100 batsman got injured overnight. He is that ordinary. Certainly Maxwell is a class act among these heathen.

I don't know if Maxwell can be portrayed as me, me, me. Wade is in the side to keep wicket and if his batting average is less than Maxi or White anyone would question why he is batting above them. As for selfish I notice that Maxwell has a habit of standing up when his side is in trouble. Unfortunately he often puts little value on his wicket when the team is looking to set a total. That's not selfish but more naive to think others wouldn't use it against him. Quiney should never have played for Australia. Get selfish Maxi. Go to a state that will use your talent and bat all day.

Maxwell has taken a risk at being brandished selfish himself, in order to reveal the selfishness of Wade. And he's gone against the grain of Aussie culture by speaking-out against the 'club'. Good on him. Wade will hate the inference, but the best thing he can do is acknowledge to Maxwell that he is correct, show genuine contrition and promise he won't be selfish again and that next time they play together for Victoria, Maxwell bats ahead of him. Then Wade will be doing the right thing and the pressure will be on Maxy. Maxwell headed the batting averages in the Shield last Summer and was the dominant player in the world at the ODI World Cup last year. He's a star. Cam White is also batting behind Wade. It's ridiculous and clearly self-motivated by Wade. If he was a good leader he would have recognised this himself. But Maxy shouldn't have to be saying this in public. The Vic management aren't showing enough leadership to support Maxwell and White. They should be pulling Wade into line behind closed doors.

I'll just cut and paste from the earlier article Other players have come out and rightly criticized Maxwell for airing his dirty laundry in public and being all about me, me ,me. Darren Berry also admitted that Wade had put himself up the order to boost his own Test hopes, so that to me says he is also playing the me, me, me game. Lucky they are winning or this sort of stuff would be a massive blow up. It might affect their campaign in the end.
