Wallabies Spring Tour report card: Roar Live episode 2

By Patrick Effeney / Editor

This week on Roar Live we’re talking with Roar expert Brett McKay on the Wallabies Spring Tour. What went right? What went wrong? Who’s to praise and who’s to blame?

It’s a Wallabies Spring Tour report card episode of Roar Live.

We’ll also delve into the question of whether Dean Mumm sucks or not, and whether Brett is actually a soothsayer with his crazy predictions in ‘Don’t Quote Me On That’.

Some of the Wallabies topics canvassed include:

– What’s up with Israel Folau recently?
– Are Stephen Moore and Tevita Kuridrani back?
– Is Reece Hodge the messiah?
– How important is Bernard Foley?

WATCH ROAR LIVE HERE:

All of that, plus answering your reader questions in what is possibly the final rugby-themed episode of Roar Live.

Yes Diehard this 'world 15 ' game is tiresome. It ignores combinations, inter-player trust, coaching, strategy and team 'chemistry'. Clumsy and lazy analysts refer to WorldXV. And who would they ever play against? Mars?

I would argue your so called fact that none of Folau Hooper or Pocock would make a world fifteen. In fact I doubt that they would make a RC fifteen either. However it does not take world's best players in your team to win. Jones stated that none of his squad would either and they went unbeaten this year.

Hooper a world class player...give me a break !!!! Hooper is a pug who runs as fast & as he can with all the heart and desire he can muster but he still less effective as a guard dog than a well trained Doberman

Ha, nuffie commentary with Folau again being judged to a different standard. Watch the games back boys, you can't re-write history: Best Australian back through Super Rugby - played a hybrid 13/15 role and topped the competition try scoring. Individual performance at 13 against the Chiefs (jammed with All Blacks) was at a completely different level from anyone else in the competition all season. England June series - best outside back across all three Tests from both teams. Rugby Champs - poor by his standards. Third Bledisloe - best Australian player, comfortably. The only high performing Wallaby in Wellington. Spring Series - best Australian back across all four Terts played, comfortably. #JTITF exercised by frequently lining up at 12 in attack, plus 13 and 15...statistically outstanding against the other Test fullbacks and lays on multiple tries for teammates in a playmaking role, yet criticised for not scoring. Sorry to break it to all of the anti-league, pro-private school, all-white establishment: Folau is a generational footballer stuck in a period of Australian Rugby that is devoid of world class players. Fact - only Pocock, Hooper and Folau are good enough to make a world XV...,which of those two are shifting him quick ball?

I must say that the management of the code and also the Wallaby players (and those players close to the squad) is still very poor. Apparently Cheika is providing feedback to players throughout the season, which I deemed a good start, but the intensity needs to be a lot more. There are just too many players who don't cut the mustard, despite their visible talent and potential, eg. Cooper, Phipps, Simmons, Moore, Foley, Skelton, Speight, Poloto-Nau etc. as a few examples. For me this is a crisis as these players have been playing international rugby for years. How is it possible that they can still not perform the fundamentals of their positions consistently. The form of too many players are still inconsistent and a good Superugby match every month is not good enough anymore to be picked for the Wallabies. Their lack of focus compared to almost ALL New Zealand players is embarrassing. How do Retallick, Whitelock, Coles, Kaino, Ben Smith as a few examples stay so focused throughout Superugby and the International season? Certainly there is something to be learned from the NZRU in terms of the management of the players. To determine whatever is needed to bring more consistency and hunger should be the ARU's first priority!

Look I like gill but he's not the best 7 in Australia.godwins ok but foley and cooper are better. I'd like to see kellaway at 15 and Folau either on the wing or OC. Fardy runs to hot and cold. Tupou will, barring injury be a wallaby prop. Would love to see Higgers at 6 or 8 if you play Timani. Like the idea of morahan. Hodge has great potential. We need a 85%+ kicker. Not convinced on Ready.

Spot on. Refs seem to let Phipps get interfered with at the breakdown more than any other halfback. I wouldn't say he great but I reckon behind a dominant pack he's awesome and his cover defence is superb (then again so is Genia's)

This team would thrash the team that played England and needs to happen before 2019: Sio Ready Kepu Coleman Arnold Fardy Gill Timani / Holloway Lucas / Genia Godwin / Debracini Tomane Hodge Kurindrani / Kerevi Moraghan / Sefa N DHP / Beale

Problem for Australia is the lack of depth. The same group of recycled players in a revolving door.

Agreed some comments re Phipps I believe his work rate is terrific but passing is sometimes but not always a little off. He is demonized and unfairly targeted at times in the way the Wallabies scrum was always targeted as at fault when clearly to some the 50 50 calls always went against them because of perception ( horrible word in rugby)

OK... I finally got through it all and like Melon would agree the 'Does he suck?' segment doesn't. Although, you can't quote me on that! Well done lads... Oh... and wtf was with the cricket thingy? Was this simply the managing editor's bias or what? :)
