Despite more rain interruptions throughout the Test, some record-breaking batting from David Warner has given Australia the chance to take the game late once again.

A defiant Younis Khan kept Australia’s hopes of the follow-on on hold, forcing skipper Steve Smith to bat again late on day four.

He wouldn’t regret his decision with Warner hitting the fastest ever Test fifty for Australia, and the second fastest of all time.

Australia blasted their way to a second innings total of 2/241 off just 32 overs with Usman Khawaja and Smith also piling on the quick runs.

A declaration was on the cards and Smith left the visitors with 16 overs to survive in the day and 465 runs to reign in.

Debutant Sharjeel Khan took the aggressive approach to the mammoth total, hitting a strike rate over 100 as he took a fancy to off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

It was that aggression that brought his downfall, falling for 40 off the bowling of Lyon.

Pakistan made it to stumps with nightwatchman Yasir Shah and resume the final day on 1/55 with a whole day in front of them.

Play will begin early to make up for the rain delays earlier in the Test and that will only aid Australia in their bid to take the series in a clean sweep.

Pakistan will be looking to survive the morning session. They won’t be too concerned if they lose the wicket of Shah, but if in-form opener Azhar Ali can stay in into the afternoon session, then the visitors will be in great position to take the draw.

Early wickets are the key for Australia, and as obvious as it sounds, if they can nab Ali and Younis without too much trouble then they’ll go a long way to taking another final day victory.

Congrats Australia. So many great performances. Smith's captaincy was excellent. So hard to win away from home apart from the odd situation. Pakistan were number one team until just recently. England were doing great and yet it was 2 all with them in England vs Pakistan. West Indies beat Pakistan in a test and nearly won the series against them. England were beaten by Bangladesh. Lets not be harsh on anybody. Anything can happen in test cricket

I agree. Asian teams have come here for 30 series for no wins

Pakistan's poor batting (except 4 good innings by Shafiq, Azhar and Younus)and fielding are the poor links for them in this Series, particularly poor form of Misbah. Hope he will retire now.

SOK out bowled Lyon in the 1st innings, please. He certainly did in the second though. A pretty even performance between them.

SOK has out bowled Lyon in both inning? Maybe it was just luck. Or FC records would show SOK is a far better bowler and cricket player all round.

I'm with you Jameswm. Lyon bowled better areas and a little slower this game but SOK showed him up big time, because he is a better, smarter player.

That's a pretty common method by spin bowlers. It's not just the wicket taking ball that gets the wicket. Can be pressure that causss a rash shot or inability to defend.

Lyon will average 80 against India.

I actually rethought that comment and edited before you posted, it was below the line, apologies. Point stands though regarding the objectivity you were attacking Warne for though. Sure, Lyon got a bit of a whack in the last few overs but he didn't bowl crap like your suggesting bit SOK most definitely bowled better then him in that innings. Then it is on the flipside for the first innings, SOK didn't bowl rubbish but he wasn't threatening the batsmen whereas Lyon was threatening and it showed in the wicket tally. A pretty even performance by both spinners I reckon.

Hazlewood 32 wickets at 20.9 over the summer, impressive.

Great strategy - have a personal crack at someone, then say they need thicker skin when they respond. Good luck with that on here. Say something often enough and it becomes the truth, does it? I love Warnie, but I can call a spade a spade too. I called Lyon's performance for what it was. I don't rely on what others say. Seems YOU'RE someone who doesn't appreciate a different opinion. Feel free to offer an opinion, but if you have a personal crack at someone, expect them to respond.

Judging by the few comments he's well and truly under your skin. You then berate Lyon's performance because you feel it's warranted, but your doing the exact thing Warne is - go figure. Let's just enjoy both of them bowling well at different periods. And forget Warne, he just loves the sound of his own voice.

SOK mightn't have bowled as good as Lyon in the 1st innings, but on what I saw he bowled as well as Lyon. Lyon bowls too many hittable ones. I think in India where you get some help accuracy is more important than the odd one with zing.

No I like watching both of them. Lyon is great when he gets his speed and length right. I am not however a fan of unbalanced commentating, or commentating with an agenda. You will see I went through ball by ball to do comparisons. That's being objective. The commentators say someone bowled a good over, when 3-4 balls are ordinary. Poor commentating as well as bowling. On what I saw of the 1st innings (admittedly not a lot), SOK bowled well, and Lyon's length remains inconsistent. But I would play both in India for sure. They have a history of bowling very well together at Shield level.

James, did you watch any of the first innings? Obviously not. As much as Warne might be a fan of Lyon, sounds to me on the other hand you may be a bit of a SOK fanboy. Taking both innings together both spinners were pretty even.

Nothing like patronising someone to make their point. There hasn't been much between them, but my issue is how unfair some of the commentators are. They take advantage of their position to influence opinions. Letting Warnie getting under my skin? More like me getting on the front foot and calling him out. Still - enjoy your name calling, and you might want to learn to spell before your next post. Seems schoolgirls spell well

Considering SOK didn't bowl anywhere near as good as Lyon in the first, I doubt SOK was the better bowler in this test. Pretty even in comparison.

SOK bowled well this innings, as did Lyon in the first. Both will go to India on the performances this match (and Lyon's last innings in the boxing day test).
