Patrick Tuipulotu cleared of doping after B-sample analysis

By The Roar / Editor

All Blacks player Patrick Tuipuloutu has been cleared of doping after his B-sample came up clean.

Tuipulotu was initially suspended after he tested positive for a banned substance, but there was a discrepancy between the A and B samples.

“This is an important and welcome conclusion for both Patrick and for rugby,” New Zealand Rugby Players’ Association chief Rob Nichol said.

The laboratory in the United States which conducted the test is reportedly investigating why there was a discrepancy between the samples.

Tuipulotu said he’s happy the truth has come out.

“I’m pleased the matter is now closed, with my reputation and integrity intact, and I look forward to getting back into training,” he said.

Tuipulotu’s case was labelled as a ‘one in 10,000’ occurrence by Drug Free Sport New Zealand boss Graeme Steel.

“It’s extraordinary but it does demonstrate why there is an A and a B sample. Some people say it’s so rare we should do away with the B sample but cases like this suggest it adds value,” Steel told Stuff.

“The other rare thing about this is how the hell it took so long to get the B sample analysed.”

NZR covered up nothing. Reasons have been given for the time that elapsed between the 2 tests. Google it. Knowing the substance would change things how other than satisfying your curiosity? My suspicion is that whatever explanation is given you will forever remain suspicious.

That's because I see it as a procedural failure . Even the press leak would indicate that to me at least. Someone has to cop responsibility for that . I believe from comments here that there is to be an investigation into the whole sorry saga. Do you have any info on that. ... and if so I will await the outcome with interest. And yes Clarke G I do accept your point that there were more parties to the info but still maintain it could have been handled better. Lets wait and see. P.S Hope I'm not coming across as anti NZR . I believe firmly with sufficient evidence over the years that they are the best run rugby admin in the world.

Geez Chook ... I wish! ... if Blues made the playoffs ... well, anything can happen.. Personally I think it will be the Canes playing in the final in South Africa against the Lions, given the draw ...

That's a cop out on your part davSA. Did you not consider the point I made that other parties would have had the information as well. So whatever parties had the information they were all, and still are, bound by the WADA regulations of confidentiality.

Because they are the custodians of the information. The buck stops with them . We will have to agree to disagree on this one ClarkeG .

You appear to be making the assumption that the journalist gained information from NZR or some person within it. There would of course be several other parties that would have had knowledge of this. So other than that I ask again , how was Tuipulotu not protected by NZR because from what I have gathered from information that has been made public, he was protected by NZR. And for the record my view is that there was no need for this information to be made public.

ClarkeG I stand by my sentiments that he was not protected. Just read the speculation and conjecture on this forum alone around the guy and he had not yet been formally found guilty . I could have been more diplomatic and said that NZR should review their procedures around these matters , but what has happened to Patrick is very serious indeed. This is far worse than finding a bug in a hotel lobby . A life and lives are adversely affected. I might also add that the stigma of this and the speculation is not just going to go away for him. That's how this world works. I have been quite vocal about this because it can just as well have happened in any country including my own and the Rugby Bodies I would hope will look at this and make darned sure their own systems are in order and if necessary are tightened up. Finally , surely only a few in the inner circle of NZ Rugby would have known about the initial test results. How did this get out...

Doping tests are required and regularly , but fair procedures and protocols should be followed. Sport people livelihoods and reputations are at stake and you can just imagine the stress . Media loves a story and this site is no exception and silly unfounded comments to stir the pot will abound.

Very suspicious! NZRU cover up initial test result, inordinate delay testing B-Sample. Then a miracle! Could be a bit more to this. I did a quick google to check on previous examples of B samples clearing an athlete. In a lot of cases very dodgy. I didn't even know that Marion Jones had actually been cleared on the result of a B sample back in 2006! It would be good if the full result of what he allegedly tested positive for in the first test was released, otherwise suspicions will persist.

Yeah the info was leaked to the press by some idiot. The time before the b sample was tested was due to Patrick himself, and his'team'. They spent the time wracking their brains to figure out how this happened, as a difference between a and b was so rare, it was a last resort after they couldn't figure where the substance had come from.

Morning Riccardo Ha! re Brett's predictions? ... I'm pleased with Brett nominating Blues to finish last in NZ, we have a chance! Sorry mate but my main concern is No 10...West has had enough chances to nail down the spot but he keeps doing brilliant things then undoes them by taking wrong options straight after ... Pulu will help, I'm sure but I just don't think he's got it. Umaga tried to entice a few others to the Blues without success so we are stuck with West or maybe Francis. Interested to see if Nanai continues to develop this year, I think he is a real talent. We'll be OK, just got to 'retain the faith' as it is!

Of course the B sample is on hand but whether or not it is tested is up to the athlete.

And what did Steve Tew say this morning ....something like ...in his experience journalists don't usually get excited about revealing their sources.
