Match preview:

After disappointing losses in Rd 1 of AFLW, the Collingwood Magpies and Melbourne Demons will be seeking to jump start their campaigns when they meet at Ikon Park tonight. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the game from 7:40pm AEDT.

Expect a tough, desperate struggle – don’t though, expect a shoot-out. One of the early take outs from the advent of AFLW, is that the women’s game involves far less scoring than the men’s. But even after taking this account, the Pies and Dees scores from last week still require a double take.

2.9.21. That was the score of both teams combined.

Lost amid all the hype and hysteria surrounding last Friday’s groundbreaking (both metaphorically and literally) opener at Ikon Park, is the fact the Pies could only muster a paltry 11 points in losing to the Blues.

Despite boasting the competition’s glamour forward in Moana Hope, Collingwood kicked just one goal for the entire game and failed to trouble the scorers at all in the final term, as they went down by 35 points.

On Sunday, Melbourne could only manage 1.4.10 in losing by 15 points the Brisbane Lions at a wet and wild Casey Fields.

While the conditions in the South Eastern suburbs were far from ideal, the fact Melbourne could only muster two scoring shots after quarter-time suggests they wouldn’t have kept the goal umpires busy if playing under the roof at Etihad.

The Demons meagre firepower was reduced further mid-week, when forward Richelle Cranston was suspended for her hit on Lions midfielder Jamie Stanton, earning her the unwanted milestone of being among the first suspensions in the competition’s history.

Collingwood will be banking on Hope’s quiet game last week being an aberration, while skipper Steph Chiocci will play, having recovered from a heavy knock.

The Pies also won’t encounter a forward as dangerous as Carlton’s Darcy Vescio, who torched them for four goals. That fact alone might be enough to tip the scales in their favour.

Now I regret not watching the game on TV. I saw the first 3 mins & Collingwood had 2 goals & I turned TV off. I checked at half-time & no better. Suffering depression & a bad day I couldn't be strong with it. Pre-teen, during my teens & 20's paid to watch Melbourne's men play and be beaten weekly, commonly by up around 50 pts & occasionally over 100 pts. Exciting when it was closer. lol. I enjoyed watching the reserves play & the upcoming players, pity that's gone. First two games on TV I noticed a great lack of marking and handball efficiency. Lack of accuracy, speed & distance with handballs. Though 2nd half of the Footscray game showed some good handballs. If under pressure from 1 to 3 opposition, if you cannot handball properly you are better off kicking it over their heads (reverse yourself if necessary) or stud-kicking very low or along the ground between them (jim Stynes was almost a master of this.) Need good hand skills to control powerfully bouncing balls. Good to see improvement and it will come among the girls in time without a doubt.

True - although I thought my team played poorly on Friday night in comparison to the previous week. Certianly, both games today were pretty good.

Great match. In fact each of the three matches played so far this weekend has been a step-up from last week which is good news for future viewing.

Great game. The first comeback in AFLW history. What a turn around. Melbourne looked hopeless in the first half and unstoppable in the 2nd.

Question to AFL.......why is it that the ladies seem to be able to play a game of footy without all those trainers and runners al over the ground ? Are the girls smater and more able to remember the simple things like attack the ball kick long do the basics, whereas ther men need to be reminded every 50 seconds !!

Attendance of 7,000 means there have now been three great crowds for the three matches so far this weekend.

FT Melb 7.2.44 def Coll 4.1.25 To butcher an old cliche' a game of two halves. Collingwood lead by 19 points at half time and ended up winning by the same margin with a stunning second half onslaught. 6 goals to none after the break and won it running away. Paxton, Pearce, and Odea, the major ball winners, while up forward Cat Phillips was dynamic. The former ultimate frisbee champ's pace and power caused Collingwood all sorts of problems and she deserved more than her two goals. Collingwood started well, but were moribund after quarter time. Mo Hope started well, but faded badly like her teamates. Only two weeks in, but the Magpies look done. Thanks for joining us.

Meg Downy ok, apparently. The only downside for Melbourne. Plenty of the Pies.

It means the game is being played at Carlton and Carlton isn't actually playing

Melb 6.1.37 Coll 4.1.25 Just over 3 minutes to go and Melbourne doing enough. Only one goal for the term, but the Magpies haven't troubled the scorers since 8 mins in the 2nd.

Melb 6.1.37 Coll 4.1.25 Downy being stretchered off with a neck brace on. Dees by two goals with just under ten minutes to go. Play now back underway.

Melbourne's Meg Downy in the hands of the trainers after a heavy knock. Appeared to pull a hammy before crashing into a Collingwood opponent. Play stopped.

Melb 6.1.37 Coll 4.1.25 Poor defending from the Pies and Shelly Scott is able to play on from a set shot and snap Melbourne's 5th goal in a row. This looks over.
