Match preview:

Melbourne City are on a downward spiral and need a win against the in-form Brisbane Roar to halt a poor run of form in the A-League. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:50pm AEDT.

Brisbane are enjoying a great run of form at the moment, culminating in two very impressive performances over the past week.

Last Friday, Brisbane played some good football en route to a nil-all draw against Sydney FC before travelling and defeating Carlos Tevez’s Shanghai Shenua in the Asian Champions League.

Against the odds, the Roar managed to upset Shanghai 2-nil away from home and now approach tonight’s contest against City with plenty of confidence.

Fatigue however may prove to be a factor tonight for John Aloisi’s men, so it would not surprise to see the squad rotated somewhat in a bid to deal with fitness concerns of several key players.

City meanwhile have underperformed badly this season. They once again gave up a lead last week, this time against the Melbourne Victory, en route to a 2-1 defeat that really deflates hope for a top two finish.

To rub salt into the wound, key players Bruno Fornaroli and Tim Cahill are both out suspended after receiving red cards against the Victory. It remains to be seen if City possess the depth required to open up a well organised Brisbane back four.

A lot of responsibility will fall to the likes of Fernando Brandan and Bruce Kamau as City bid to revive their season. Brandan played well in a losing side last week and set up the opening goal for City with some good dribbling. If the Argentine can continue to build his form, then City may be a chance of securing a result tonight.

On form, Brisbane appear great value to secure their second win of the season against City. This is a team that is now beginning to build some nice combinations in attack. The growing influence of experienced Socceroo stars such as Brett Holman and Tommy Oar is serving Brisbane well and they should be too strong for an understrength City outfit.

Roar to win 2-1

jb, I must admit I was surprised to see young Ingham start, but not at all urprised that Kristensen didn't (he must have been tired, surpised he was on the bench and came on). I thought we had the beter of the first half and probably the last 20 minutes, and were a bit unlucky with Theo letting one through that we'd expect him to get. But I take your point - coming weeks will be a test of our squad management and team selections as much as anythung else.

If you watched carefully ref was standing right behind the action seeing Ingham pulling back of Fitzy's shirt and then putting his arm across Fitzy's shoulder. 100% stupid from Ingham and probably would have been a foul anywhere else on the pitch.

Watch Borrello's knees buckle as if shot - but there was no gun, there was hardly any contact. He went down and hoped the ref would look favourably towards him.

OK Nemesis, why do we continually hear from the Fox commentatrs and others, when there's contact inside the box a penalty is on the cards, or they've given the ref a reason? There was contact, fair penalty is a common call on Fox. We hear this most weekends, and players, especially City players, take advantage of that and go down easily. I don't think Borrello was trying to milk a penalty, he didn't look to the refor appeal for one and the ref was right beside him. He was certainly tuched, slight push. I don't think it deserved a penalty, but why are you and the Fox team going against your normal commentary and saying not fair, this time? Even the Fox team eventually showed the second goal a ouple of frames earlier which showed MacLaren on side.

Pablo You might be on to something., Everytime I put up the attendance, and that's all I do, it's only ever a number (sometimes 5 digits, other times 4 digits), people on this board absolutely lose the plot. They start attacking the messenger, they start talking about other sports, they put up irrelevant posts. Why do people react like this? You are perhaps the first to have suggested the potential problem with some of these people.

If everyone knows this persons agenda and he/she chooses to waste their life posting on codes that they don't like, why doesn't everyone just ignore them ? I'd also be quite hesitant to berate this person as we just don't know their mental state. This is probably their only social interaction. So while it is probably a bit mean to take that from them, we aren't social workers and reading the same boring comments from them is getting a bit tedious.

Doesn't have to be a dirty game to have a load of cards given out. A lot of cynical shirt tugging going on these days.

"Borello’s dive. Flopping to the ground to trick the ref into awarding a pen? That was blatant simulation." ? Your havin a laugh Stevo, your 'flopping to the ground' is normally the likes of Brandan, Fallneroli, Kamau or even Kilkenny and now it looks like youngsters such as Fitzgerald have taken on the role in the absence of the so called experts. J.A. was right in calling out City as divers, even JVS came up with some lame excuse about it all and guess what? JVS is gone and their still doing it.

Nemesis - As usual your comment gives no credit as to how a team, made up up 7 reserves, overcame a two goal deficit to draw level ,and which they could quite easily have won. The City coach made quite a shrewd observation and after half time obviously decided to "hammer" at Roar's major weak spots, out wide on the wings, and didn't that change pay up in a big way. Kamau and Fitzgerald took the game right up to a sadly depleted Roar back-line and didn't it pay dividends. City were by far, from goalkeeper out, the better team in the second half ,so give these kids some credit where it is due. Roar?? Yes they have had a busy week but, that run on team?????? Cheers jb.

Swanny I'm big enough to accept that the A-League last night got a bigger crowd than the AFL Women's. These days, that's a notable achievement.

Both Brisbane goals from ref errors. Wonder if the vocal Roar fans on this forum will be complaining like they usually do? Two nil and they stuffed it up.

Lionheart -- Did the run on team selection not seem a bit strange to you?. With the back line totally decimated,Hingert and North not available, not only did Roar play an almost new face at right back, but also chose to keep Brisbane's best player, Kristensen, (who usually "screens" the back line) sitting on the bench ,until it was apparent he was needed. Overall, I thought Roar went back to the bad habits of a few months ago, with the endless passing across the back four allowing what had to be a very worried opponent, plenty of time to get back behind the centre line and re-group,making it harder for the Roar "fast breaks" to gain the necessary penetration ,where ,when they did, they found a very experienced goalkeeper putting on a "master class". This brings back the age - old argument in football, with 3 substitutes available should a manager always field his strongest team for the opening stanza./ Cheers jb.
