Fardy moving on as Brumbies lock down Sam Carter

By Daniel Jeffrey / Editor

The ACT Brumbies have announced the re-signing of Sam Carter, but the good news has been somewhat dampened by the revelation that their Wallaby back-rower, Scott Fardy, will leave the club at the end of the current Super Rugby season.

Fardy was a standout for the Wallabies during their run to the 2015 Rugby World Cup final, but struggled for consistent minutes in Michael Cheika’s side throughout 2016. Fardy made his Super Rugby debut for the Brumbies in 2012 and has since racked up more than 80 caps for the club.

“Scott has been a fantastic player for the Brumbies during his spell with the club,” Brumbies CEO Michael Thomson commented.

“Whilst we are obviously disappointed that Scott has decided to move on, we thank him for his service for the club and wish him all the best for the future.”

Fardy has agreed to a two-year deal to play with Irish club Leinster.

Meanwhile, club co-captain Carter isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, committing to the Brumbies until the end of 2019.

Carter is currently sitting on 80 caps for the Brumbies, having made his Super Rugby debut for the side back in 2011.

“I am delighted to commit to the Brumbies,” Carter said. “I am looking forward to helping the club prosper this season and in the years to come.

“We have an exciting team here at the Brumbies with an excellent blend of experienced heads alongside some top-quality youngsters and I am excited to be part of the continuing success of the club.

“The Brumbies are very special to me and have been a major part of my rugby career and it’s great to be able to be settled and in an environment I know very well. There are lots of positive vibes around the club and I am looking forward to playing my part.”

Brumbies head coach Stephen Larkham hailed the retention of the Tamworth-born Carter, who has played 13 times for the Wallabies since his international in 2014.

“Sam’s re-signing sends out a positive message throughout the club,” Larkham said. “He is a well-respected individual within the playing group and leads from the front.

“His performances are consistently good and we are very pleased that he has extended his stay at the Brumbies.”

Carter will captain the Brumbies in their upcoming Super Rugby clash with the Sharks.

So go on and explain Arnold, Sio, Alexander and Pocock signing new contracts. Kyle Godwin and the twins joined this season. You are worse than a political spin doctor with your scaremongering

Hope he's not lost it too much, because Leinster are a better team than the Brumbies so he'll need to be sharp.

Australian rugby is virtually dead may as well leave the sinking ship. Let's face it the super rugby are just glorified wallaby trials.

.........I believe these decisions are made subjectively while all players will have this in the forefront of their minds presently. I am only being a devils advocate here. so who knows whether or not the current climate of uncertainty has influenced Fardy's move but one thing is clear Brett, the only Super entity that will be pruned from the Australian group, in the event that this is the preferred option of any Sanzar restructure, will be the Canberra one.

The other thing to consider is that Fardy wasn't on much money early on his career then was let go by the Force when he was given an opportunity.

Exactly. The Brumbies have had a stable for the past three seasons at least. This is despite the mis-management and departures of Gandalf and White in the coaching staff. Departures were eventually going to happen.

How does that explain Carter re-signing for two more years then?

Although I’ve never been a big supporter of Cheika’s selection inconsistencies. Fardy at 32 who has endured a mainly uninspired 2016, by his standards, may not be on a short list come 2019. Rugby players with his level of professionalism are folk who can see/ feel when their services are no-longer the flavour of the month. As his productive years are finite, relocating to Ireland where suitable remuneration has been offered is smart. I’ve often believed that Cheika is very much a user and abuser, with the ARU an inept side show when player integrity / future is in question.

Fardy is 32 years old so was not going to last much longer. Higginbotham is 30. Also with Timani, Holloway, + other 6/8's how long was Fardy going to be able to hold on anyway. He is a very good ruck monkey and hard nut but the wallabies need dominant tackling hard running and ball skills from their 6/8. Good decision by Fardy to take the money o/s.

And 'Yes' to the genius who smugly points that Giteau is not a Waratah - I only used him in that company as he was neither deserving of his spot. Prior to 2007 he was a rock star but these days he is an old man with slow legs & less attack than 'Ant' Faingaa (but better than Dean Mumm though)

Giteau was preferred over Toomua at the last RWC, Dean. Mumm preferred over Fardy last season, Horne over Tomane, Hooper over Pocock (and Gill) etc Michael Chieka is chasing off the best players due to his unapologetic bias towards his Tah-Boys with backing by Pulver's NSWRU posturing as the ARU. Strap in for a post apocalyptic ride to the next RWC !

And Giteau gave up a lot of money to play for Aus. Beale was preferred at 12 over Toomua? When? The Brumbies have not lost players because of Cheika, thats absurd. This "if you dont give me an ARU contract Im going and its your fault" is ridiculous and it doesnt work that way.

If the powers that be think Fardy is blocking McMahons pathway then things are going to get worse than they already are.

As a backrower one senses that McMahon would have overtaken him sooner rather than later and I would rather lose fardy than McMahon to an overseas club at this stage. That's the philosophical way of looking at what is an unfortunate loss to Australian rugby. Would love to keep them both but wouldn't want to lose McMahon because Fardy was blocking his pathway.

Don't know where you get off having a go at Toomua who obviously was just another Brumby that Cheika(ARU) didn't have a gut feel about. It was plain to see that Cheika preferred players such as Giteau and particularly Beale in the 12 jumper. How many minutes did Toomua get at the WC. With little or no interest by way of an ARU contract for Toomua, White, Tomane and Mogg the Brumbies have lost significantly in the last couple of years at the hands of Cheika and the ARU whilst others have received significant assistance example Reds with Douglas payout to Leinster by ARU and signifcant ARU contract to Koribete at Rebels and now we hear Beale is to be enticed back to the Waratahs. Don't rubbish guys who are professionals for going when without a ARU contract and Wallaby bonus payments the renumeration in Super rugby is well below what they would receive overseas.

Interesting how things work in the pro era. You have guys like DHP and Fardy finding their feet overseas before excelling for the WBs. And you have young guys like Toomua dipping out at their best for the bright lights and big bucks. And then there's the traditionalists like Hooper and Slipper and hopefully Arnold who stick out out.

.....leaving what he feels may well be the Brumbies sinking ship - perhaps?

Sad to see him leaving Canberra, been a great representative of the Brumbies and the Wallabies. Wish him all the best though, hopefully he makes a bunch of money in the NH and then comes back to Canberra to run his pub. Can't really blame him though when Cheik made it clear that he has no real future at the Wallabies by consistently picking him behind Mumm and Skelton.
