WATCH: Quade Cooper shown red card for swinging arm in Queensland's big loss

By Roar TV / Roar Guru

The Queensland Reds’ Super Rugby clash with the Lions in Johannesburg went from bad to worse, when in the second half, star player Quade Cooper was sent off for a high tackle on Rohan Janse van Rensburg.

Having been kept scoreless in the first half, Cooper’s tackle strayed too high on Rensburg, with his swinging arm catching the Lions’ centre in the head.

After viewing several replays, the referee deemed it necessary to send Cooper from the field for the rest of the match.

Despite being a man down, the Reds did go on to show some fight, but the task proved too much for the away side, as the Lions cruised to a 44-14 win.

Trouble with those laws is that we are going to see many players sent off and it will be a tactic to be hit high... Gotta say if Quade hit him flush in the head he would have knocked on at least and may have been knocked out. Initial contact has always been important and it cannot be red if the initial contact was with the shoulder...

Finally a sensible comment. Cooper attacked the arms to either dislodge the ball or hold the ball up over the line. He was never going to stop the player. The issue is his swinging arm (necessary to dislodge a ball) slipped up off the shoulder and hit the guy in the head. His right arm was wrapped around and he nearly succeeded in stripping the ball out. The issue is in league that would have been play on... a penalty maybe but as the try was scored just play on. We are going to see many supporters move to league as union gets over reffed and ruined.

Who kicks the goals? Kurtley cant kick either ..Remember that debacle when the muppett had short studs on in slippery conditions and then proceeded to slip over and miss a dead cert penalty goal right in front 30 meteres out that cost us the Lions series in Brisbane in 2013..

None of those are criteria required for a red card, so I don't get the point? Are you saying serious injury must result to be given a red card? What does unconscious or headchecks have to do with the price of fish? Odd.

meant Mumm, Foley and Cooper, etc*. The test that we had all three at once was an absolute joke.

Foley is a disaster at international level. Tackles worse than Cooper, kicks goals as poorly as Cooper (only hides it by going for the corner whenever it's anywhere remotely difficult), misses touch about 50% of the time and has no passing or tactical kicking game. Only thing he has going for him is the ability to run the ball to the line and be a good support runner. Sounds better suited to a 10, only problem is he wants to be the star so failed completely at that too. At least Cooper has some upsides as infuriating as his downsides sometimes are. I'm sick of conceding 5 tries every match because we're defending with 13 men due to the number of passengers who make their way onto the team (Foley, Mumm, etc). None of Foley, Beale or Cooper can defend, so we can only play one of them. Foley is the worst so he's out, Quade is just doing nothing at the moment so he should be out too. Thus, Beale should be the only one who should get played. We have no better option at 10 unless we go for one of the young guys from the Reds or Rebels so stick Beale at 10 as average as he has been in the past. Haylett-Petty can catch a high ball and provide covering tackles unlike Beale.

While we're getting people to admit things (and Cooper can't tackle, but he does so better than Foley, that's statistically proven) admit things yourself, mate—the Tahs are a joke and are an embarrassment. Australian rugby is a joke and an embarrassment at present. The best team is an out-of-form Brumbies in a rebuild phase after they lost almost all of their stars, and the ARU are about to cut them anyway despite being Australia's only half-decent team.

Ole Marto I'll stick my tongue out at you all the time if, it gets your knickers in a twist. Btw, the day I see QC running in to tackle instead of, running out to be the sweeper, is the day the leopard's spots, have changed - and that my friend is "the day, when hell freezes over...." What a laugh....QC making a tackle!!

Yes agree, this latest doesn't help, with a lot more ground to make up. Cheika won't like the fact that he's having to rely on Foley or someone new if Cooper doesn't pick up from here.

Paul, shoulder first does not matter. Reckless tackle A player is deemed to have made reckless contact during a tackle or attempted tackle or during other phases of the game if in making contact, the player knew or should have known that there was a risk of making contact with the head of an opponent, but did so anyway. This sanction applies even if the tackle starts below the line of the shoulders. This type of contact also applies to grabbing and rolling or twisting around the head/neck area even if the contact starts below the line of the shoulders. Minimum sanction: Yellow card Maximum sanction: Red card Accidental tackle When making contact with another player during a tackle or attempted tackle or during other phases of the game, if a player makes accidental contact with an opponent's head, either directly or where the contact starts below the line of the shoulders, the player may still be sanctioned. This includes situations where the ball-carrier slips into the tackle.

I didn't realise you expected an answer Was he knocked out? No. Do the laws only apply if he's knocked out?
