Highlights: Manly maul Bulldogs 36-0

By John Coomer / Roar Guru

A five-try first half romp has set up a big win for Manly at home against Canterbury.

The Sea Eagles went to sheds leading 26-0 after controlling the first forty minutes well in heavy conditions.

They forced a number of repeat sets, and along with a poor completion rate from Canterbury, Manly ended up with 58 per cent of first half possession. They capitalised on it.

Dylan Walker opened the scoring with a try off a Daly Cherry-Evans kick. That was followed soon after by a try from Curtis Sironen, who ran into a hole off a DCE pass.

Brian Kelly then scored two tries, further enhancing his reputation in just his fourth NRL game. One was off a Blake Green kick, the other from good line running off another good DCE ball.

The Sea Eagles put the icing on the cake just before half-time when the Trbojevic brothers and DCE combined for a long-range try that saw Tom score near the posts.

Canterbury second-rower Josh Jackson was sent to the sin bin for 10 minutes late in the first half for a professional foul.

The second half didn’t reach any great heights, but Manly hooker Api Koroisau crossed after backing up to receive a good offload from a charging Addin Fonua-Blake.

Late in the match, DCE came up with his fifth try assist when his deft cross-field kick was regained by Uate on the wing and he scored out wide.

The win leaves Manly at 2-2 after four rounds, after they had lost their opening two matches.

The Bulldogs slip to 1-3, placing more pressure on coach Des Hasler, especially with today’s loss being a seven-tries to nil thumping.

Final score
Manly Sea Eagles 36
Canterbury Bulldogs 0

Cangratulations to Manly. Now as a long time Bulldogs supporter & i speak on behalf of every other Bulldogs supporter i have spoken to. We are fed up with the same non performing players kept on the paddock & not dropped when we have players with potential in the lower grades. Also, our halves..What halves. It's almost laughable. I hope the rumours are right regarding the Tigers big 4 moving to the Dogs.

After over 30 years as a loyal Canterbury fan I decided in October 2016 to pull the plug and become a neutral. The sleep deprivation from ensuing guilt trip has been worse than the sleep lost in despair at what was coming out of Belmore. But, It just wasn't Canterbury. Attack had gone on LSL. I feel a traitor for not sticking fats but above all else I regard Rugby League as a life essential and however many seasons are left in my locker I want to enjoy. My old mate SGI John has endured a similar experience with the big red V. Canterbury in its present state is beyond repair. Des Hasler is as decent and dedicated man. He is just not a Canterbury man. The List needs a complete overhaul and some quality recruitment. It will take at least three seasons to turn Canterbury around.

It's only round four...but your point is well made. One try against Melbourne and none against Manly. Four against a Warriors side that couldn't number up. Five tries against the Roosters but a couple of those were from broken play. They didn't look like scoring yesterday. They had a few repeat sets in the 10-15 minute mark which Manly accounted for pretty easily. They don't have any sort of set plays, not a second man or a runaround or decoys or anyone running the outside in line. They just shovel the ball along the backline until they run out of space. I was watching some highlights from 2012 the other day. If anyone thinks the dogs haven't changed their approach and are playing anything close to the style they did then, they're dreamin'. There was Ennis working out of dummy half, crisp interchange passing between the forwards. Guys like Pritchard and Halatau making regular breaks down the middle of the field, Reynolds looping behind the forwards and releasing Barba and Morris. Even though it was forward based it was extremely entertaining and highly skilful footy. The dogs aren't playing remotely like that now. They had Reynolds and Kris Keating in the halves for most of that year. If your half isn't measuring up to Kris Keating you have problems.

Quick glance at the table shows the Dogs have scored 54 points in 5 games..Mcrone's Dragons 74 in 4...everybody's favourite for the spoon until yesterday Knights have 70 odd from 5.... Hang about a bit Ivan...Dogs 'big 4' Graham,Klemmer,Jackson and Moses may have a better offer if / after the Broncos flog them this week...

"It’s becoming a waste of time taking the time to write an objective (albeit passionate) wrap up of the game for it to be held up by mods continually for no reason. If the Roar wants contributors to create their content for them then they should sort out their moderation filters." Correct. Have you ever got a response from mods? I keep asking "Why?" but have never had the courtesy of a single reply. It's poor.

TB, have you e- mailed your disappointment to the editors? They do respond. I am sure many Roarers would want to read your wrap of the game.

You know it's a bad arvo when the best you can say is "at least we only lost the second half ten zip". But how bad was the quality of refereeing? Just kidding! Congratulations to Manly, they were everything the Bulldogs were not. Dynamic, passionate, skilled and entertaining. Thoroughly deserved wincand some teeth grindingly entertaining footy from them. Seriously, I don't know what to think about that loss. Do you write it off as one of those days or sack half the team? Some changes definitely need to be made. Lichaa was awful yesterday. So many of the Dogs problems in attack start with his shocking service. Craig Garvey and Zac Woodford shared the hooking duties in NSW Cup and killed it - so there are options there. BMoz needs to go back to fullback. Abbey would be better served learning the ropes from the wing. Aiden Tolman looks like he's playing in slow motion these days. Slow in defence, slow hit ups and ponderously slow play the balls. Kasiano was Dally M prop of the year in 2012 when he was starting and Graham playing off the bench. There's no reason why he can't start. Other than Klemmer and Kasiano the pack is so one paced. Eastwood doew some good stuff now and then but is a liability overall. Slow, can't move laterally. He's so far from the prototype for the modern backrower. Again in NSW Cup, the back row of Rod Griffin, Rhyse Martin and Renouf To'omaga were great. Ran hard, good lines, big, mobile, skilful and all three scored tries. Let's start giving these guys a shot. Mbye and Reynolds combined directly in three of the Dogs four tries last week. This week same old, same old. Matt Frawley is behind Mbye and is an old school ball playing 7 with a good eye for the game and a good kicking game. If things aren't working give him a chance. Reynolds was poor yesterday but he never stops trying and the most dangerous the Dogs looked was when he was taking the ball to the line. Mbye was poor and uninvolved. The worst part is that Hasler seems so stubborn and so reluctant to change things. The only changes made in the last two years have been the ones forced on him. I know this sounds like a big whinge but I can usually find the positives coming out of any game, but that was one of the worst, softest, insipid, effortless performances I've seen from a Bulldogs side.

Great game by Manly - not a Sea Eagles fan but I enjoyed this game. Manly forwards did a great job creating the platform for DCE and the backs Bulldogs will be hurting being kept to no score
