GWS give Gold Coast a three-figures beating

By Josh / Expert

The grass at Spotless Stadium proved to be much Greener for the Giants than it was last week at Adelaide Oval on Saturday as milestone man Toby kicked five goals and GWS knocked off the Gold Coast Suns by 102 points.

The Giants pulled away with a strong start and the game was effectively over half way through the first quarter with the home side just clearly the better team.

The scoreline read 59 to 9 in favour of the Giants at one point in the second quarter as they dominated all over the ground, but they quietened down a bit after that and the Suns worked their way into the game.

The Suns ultimately kicked a nice string of goals in the second quarter and then two more early in the third, but were completely blown away after that with the Giants kicking 14 of the last 15 goals. Not a typo.

Who kicked those goals? As mentioned Greene had five. Jeremy Cameron kicked six, Josh Kelly, Devon Smith and Steve Johnson all kicked three, Rory Lobb two, while Dylan Shiel and Sam J Reid kicked singles.

It was the highest score the Giants have kicked and their biggest margin win in club history – all things considered, a very impressive offering. It doesn’t entirely put to bed the concerns last week gave us, but it helps, and shows us that this is a proud club who won’t play badly two weeks in a row.

For the Suns though it has become a very pessimistic start to the season after they were upset by Brisbane last week, and now surely some tough questions will be asked of the club.

Jack Martin kicked three goals for them and new recruit Jarrod Witts did well in the ruck, but they just looked average across the park for the most part.

Gary Ablett kicked a goal but had only sixteen disposals. Tom J Lynch was held goalless for the first time since Round 14, 2015.

You can expect to hear plenty of talk about Rodney Eade, who is out of contract at the end of this year, after this one – and given how poor that display was, not unreasonably so.

Final score

GWS Giants 24.16.160
Gold Coast Suns 8.10.58

Fox don't break their figures down by state - where did you get those figures?

The 9000 on Fox was for Sydney only not nationally

Stop pointing the finger at other code. what the NRL, A-league or Rugby gets has nothing to do with the fact that GWS with a winning team with the AFL propaganda machine running them pull can only pull 8000. Plus they got 33k of FTA and 9000 on Fox.

Glad somebody raised the issue of Ablett's performance. The way he just ambled around, he either he didn't care or he had an injury. Either way, he may need a rest next week or at least a move to the forward pocket, just so the rest of the team can see that everyone is accountable. Also, whether Ablett's poor performance was due to disinterest or another injury, 2018 may be too late for him to make a return to Victoria. He may be passed it. Sad turnaround for someone who almost lifted the club single-handedly to their first finals series in 2014.

Manly / Bulldogs only got a few hundred more in the same weather. Will have to wait to see what the crowd figures are against more competitive teams.

I agree totally with you on these points. Australia has had a terrible history when it comes to racism, as it was set up as penal colony founded on genocide and the dispossession of the first nations people. Immigrants from non Anglo countries have always copped racism. After a while one group will get accepted and then the next group of incoming immigrants will cop it. In the 90's Hanson attacked "Asians" (sic) and now she attacks Muslims , capitalizing on Islamophobia that has been fostered by the state post 911.

Of course Sydney were a manufactured club too, as South Melbourne were relocated. They have now developed their own organic identity just like the Giants will do. I admit the resentment towards the Giants is partly irrational. I personally respect GWS and actually like the way they play the game. I picked them to finish first and win the premiership. I have far more respect for GWS than GCS. I think many Victorian residents will soften their attitudes towards the Giants over time. I know the AFL didn't want another Brisbane Bears but when you talk to many supporters of traditional (sic) clubs they resent the unequal treatment.

Of course Footscray were allowed in by executives, because football doesn't exist in a vacuum outside the capitalist society that we live in. I am aware of both Southport and Cambelltown. There is a lot of resentment in Victoria towards GWS. Have a listen to what Mark Fine has said about them. His approach has softened but he has raised very valid criticisms of the preferential treatment they have experienced at the extent of other clubs. It is no secret that the AFL wanted Buddy to go to GWS. Sydney were then punished because they successfully lured Buddy.

As much as the crowd was disappointing yesterday at the GWS game, the Rv ratings were not, not sure about FTA, but the fox ratings were 220k, in comparison to the alleged biggest aleague club WSW who rated 38k against Newcastle. Considering the absolute flogging they are incredible numbers. I doubt there was more than a handful of Suns fans there yesterday and i think many Giants fans who have 3 game memberships would not have used them yesterday. Manuka probably would have got more fans.

I agree Don, WA is nicer than the GC, don't know about the better prospects though, it don't matter with the pay packet, AFL will chip in for one of there spoon fed clubs, and I'm sure Saint fans thought he loved them too, his been at Freo a while now and has cost them ultimate success with his stupid policies of resting players, not to mention his ideas about winning by only kicking 10 goals a game, the man has no loyalty when it comes to moving on, AFL want GC to be successful, even though he would only cost them success, like he has you, it's on the cards mate,??

That's right, Footscray were, just like Southport existed and wanted to join the AFL and had the money, just like Campbelltown who at one stage joined the ACT League because they were very strong in Sydney. Don't you think the VFL had what would be termed executives in those days, or boardrooms, or in 1925 looked at potential growth, the VFL has always sought growth and stay in front of the game. Or do you reckon Footscray was admitted over a beer and game of pool ?, because it was a working class club ?

Footscray were part of the VFA and were admitted into the VFL. They were a working class club as opposed to some club created by executives in a board room. You cannot compare the two. Slane: you are right, hence my dislike of WCE, Freo, and Adelaide. The AFL would rather have these corporate creations than grass roots clubs like Fitzroy, who were sacrificed on the alter of mammon.

And it's not like they have a deep emotional connection to their origins. Collingwood the club doesn't much resemble Collingwood the footy club. But that's not the point of course. Some people just enjoy being unpleasant on the internet.

Footscray is just a johnny come lately, they were not an original 1896, only joining in 1925. They too were an expansion club.

Sorry I forgot to mention Zac Williams and Nathan Wilson, both indigenous boys, they might have had some issues in 1950 in Willoughby as well.

What!, some of those haircuts would have got them the cuts !. Also Tendai Mzungu would have been bullied, and the Italian boys, Cogniglio, Tiziani, Deledio and Taranto made fun off, the German boy Mohr would just have been coming out of POW camp at Cowra perhaps with the Italian boys, perhaps the Australian boys of Irish decent of which going by surnames there seems to be plenty of still looked down upon in the 1950's and any intermarriage with Protestants frowned upon The Dutch boy De Boer would have fitted in I guess.
