Tigers need Cleary oxygen to get off life support

By Mr Brown / Roar Pro

With four losses in a row and barely a point logged in the try column since Round 1, Wests Tigers are officially on life support.

Their lively performance against Souths in Round 1 surprised the experts and provided their fans with some much-needed optimism for season 2017.

But that performance seems a lifetime ago.

Since the sacking of Jason Taylor, things have continued southward for the Tigers, with the list of fan grievances, ongoing player contract uncertainty, coaching upheavals, and boardroom issues suffocating the club.

What’s more, all grades are following the compass south and have been tasered into fits of bad footy.

Once considered the club’s lifeblood, the Tigers’ lower grades have been bleeding points. Their usual top-eight returns have in the past salvaged some hope; the future at least looked bright. The depth was there, the success was there.

Fans would cross their toes and think perhaps, one day, that success would transfer to the top grade. But this year is different, with all grades coping a pasting. Wests Tigers HQ is resembling the ER.

And it doesn’t look like things will improve quickly either.

Ivan Cleary’s impending arrival is desperately needed and sure to provide a much-needed defibrillation to an outfit already receiving CPR. But he faces immense challenges.

The better-than-average four are all facing a crisis of confidence. The reliable James Tedesco seems to have lost something. His usual surgeon-like skills have abandoned him. It’s obvious he’s struggling to find the chalk, but the biggest concern is that Teddy isn’t setting up tries either. His dependable passing game seems strangely absent.

The assumptions we can make here are that Tedesco has lost confidence in his outside men or he’s been reading too much of his own press. Both instances are tough fixes, and need tending to pronto, however, I’d say the former is less of a concern than the latter.

Then there’s Mitchell Moses. This guy could guy could be the Tigers’ dominant half for the next 15 years, or he could end up being a hybrid Benji Marshall and Robbie Farah. His most recent comments of wanting to play finals footy smacks of arrogance and has injected yet another calculated serum of manipulation into his already drawn-out contract negotiations. Strong club leadership is required in this instance; too much power to Moses will end in tears.

As for Aaron Woods and Luke Brooks, most fans would agree that both are replaceable at this stage of their careers. Woods has a solid motor and is handy forward, but he’s not the type of prop to have opposition players seeking a pre-booking of the on-field medi-cab.

And since starting back in 2013, Brooks’ form has plunged lower than the value of Tim Simona’s memorabilia stocks. Brooks’ kicking game, in particular, is in dire need of bandaging and rehabilitation.

The recovery process looks long and tiresome. Again, they will more than likely be forced to watch finals footy with the lingering sting of mad Monday’s hangover.

Fans will recall that this was the year that the Tigers were meant to challenge for the title if you listened to the experts back in 2013-14. However, a litany of bad decisions and costly mistakes made by management, board and players has stifled growth and reads much like a death certificate.

They need some steady hands to fix this mess.

When are they finished part paying for Farah's contract? That would impact on the space under the cap

Cleary is stuck with this Roster for 2017 and with only 8 players signed past this year the West Tigers will need to open the cheque book and delve deeply into the player market. - they need a complete overhaul of their roster for 2018 and beyond.

Woods runs the ball up like a cuddly bear with no vigour at all -everything is in slow motion with him/Nofa well he was shown up badly with his opposite soring 3 tries and they could have scored 4 or 5 too/Moses plays for himself and has poor NRL standard defence/Tedesco is trying too hard and playing like someone who wants to be somewhere else

Cronk will either retire or change his mind and play one last season with the Storm- remember the Storm have a very structured game so will Cronk be able to fit in with another club who don't have a similar structured game???- At 34 I don't think so. Potential teams be best to spend their money on other longer term players as there are a stack off contract in 2017.

Yeah, I like the big 3 stuff. Brooks just hasn't come on enough to keep at the club on the dollars he wants. Either he has to come cheap or catch ya later.

Adding a Cronk to the Tigers' team would instantly lift the whole place. However, I highly doubt he would come. He is most likely headed to the Dogs.

Perhaps. However, I think the Tigers have finally got the right man for the job. In all seriousness, the club was dogged by some internal rubbish at both a board and player level when both Potter and Taylor signed. Consequently, their tenures where undermined from the very start. Similar stuff was happening at Penrith when Gus got there a few years ago which is why he vocally said at the time he wanted an experienced coach for the Job as the Riff was not a suitable place for a rookie. More blame needs to be placed on the board's decision to install Potter and Taylor who have subsequently had their coaching careers torpedoed due taking their role for which they were either: a) Not prepared for, or b) Not good enough for. However, it has taken this turbulent time for the board to realise this.

Think they need more than 2 players Max..as a gauge only 4 of their current 17 would make the Knights run on team..Teddy,Nofa,Moses and Woodsy.. Agreed with the need for mongrel, they should be raiding Penrith..Fisher-Harris,bring back Akauola,if they've got cash ? Klemperer for sure..dreaming I guess..why buy Mcqueen?

I see The Wests 75/ Balmain 25 combo as being two players short of being highly competitive if not a 7th/ 8th position on the ladder. Put a Klemmer type in the forwards and an Oates clone on the wing and voila! you have a team. Ivan was anxious to coach again. He knows this is his last chance.

What a sucker for punishment. Fans will give him until the end of the year, but then we'll hear the same old routine of calling for the coach's head. He doesn't have any attacking strategy... he doesn't have the support of the playing group... he's not playing the right players in the right positions at the right times... he's not recruiting or retaining talent. Then they will get a new coach and the cycle starts over.

Monumental task for Ivan. Playing 2017 with this lot, it's seems that he won't have the luxury of blooding lower grade players late in the season once we're out of finals contention. The Big 4 fiasco. Personally I'd keep Teddy and Moses and develop Liddle into a star 9 and call them the Big 3 like Melbourne. Oh yeah and dealing with Marina No Show & Co. All the best Ivan!
