The decline of Hawthorn, and their clouded future

By Clarko's Knuckle Sandwich / Roar Rookie

Hawthorn has, arguably, been the most successful team of the last decade. That much is clear, now that the era has finally ended. But the future of the Hawks is now uncertain.

Beginning in 2005, a playing list was built from the ground up by Alastair Clarkson, who developed a young core group that would go on to become superstars.

The names are so familiar that surnames will suffice: Mitchell, Hodge, Franklin, Rioli, Roughead, Lewis.

Surrounded in the team by the astute targeting of guys like Jack Gunston, Shaun Burgoyne, Brian Lake and Josh Gibson through trade and free agency, led to a modern dynasty. But despite recent success, the cracks were starting to show even before this year’s meek beginning.

Speculation about the contracts of Hodge, Mitchell, Burgoyne and Gibson had many in the media and general public wondering which of that group of veterans would retire come the end of the 2016 season. The re-signing of all four was a shock, especially once Hawthorn was dumped out of finals in straight sets at the hands of a sharper, slicker looking Bulldogs team. Plus, their 5-0 record in games decided by less than a goal last year was misleading.

Of the re-signed veterans who weren’t traded, Josh Gibson going around another year would appear to be the biggest mistake, especially considering that Kaiden Brand and Kurt Heatherley are two young key backs wasting away in the VFL. Kaiden Brand played 11 games last year and showed glimpses that he has the height and athleticism to be a key back for Hawthorn for the next 10 years.

Bran would greatly benefit from another year of learning his craft against the best in the AFL and, considering Gibson’s form to start this year, he may get his opportunity at the veteran’s expense very soon.

This year should be a year of discovery for the Hawthorn Football Club. Spots need to be up for grabs each week based on performance but preference also needs to be given to youth.

Are guys like Billy Hartung, Dallas Willsmore, Daniel Howe, Tim O’Brien and Jono O’Rourke able to become regulars in the team? Unless they are given sustained opportunity and greater responsibility, it’ll remain an unknown and they’ll continue to stagnate in the VFL.

When a team is as successful as Hawthorn has been for the past five to six years, the level of talent available to that club is significantly lower than a team with greater access to elite talent through the draft.

However, Hawthorn now faces the prospect of finishing outside the top eight for the first time since 2009 and yet not prospering at the draft due to a poorly handled future picks arrangement with St Kilda. Depending on where GWS finish, Hawthorn’s 1st pick in the 2017 draft will fall between the mid 30′ and 40’s.

Including 2016, where Hawthorn’s first pick was 76, this year will be the second year in a row that Hawthorn will be unable to bring in young, elite talent through the draft, while also losing at least two of their senior brigade.

This, paired with the inexperience of the younger guys on the Hawthorn list, points towards the potential for bottoming out in coming years unless opportunities are given to those young players mentioned above right now, while there is still enough talent to cover for their inexperience.

Unless time is dedicated to the discovery of whatever young gems may be hidden in the Hawks list, times ahead may be rough. No longer can Hawthorn rely on it’s older players to cover for deficiencies in it’s middle tier, the improvement must come from beneath now.

The Hawthorn we know is gone. The end came quickly. But what next?

Amazing how two months of footy can change somebody's mind. I thought the Hawks were gone fished for a decade. No Clarkson got his side and structure all wrong. Hawks have nearly rebuilt there back line over night and that's were it starts. I can't believe I'm saying this hodge has to go around for one more year and Stratton and drawled have to be traded out. A young back line that develops together sets up hawks for years to come. Anything eles would be stupid.

At the risk of sounding pedantic, I would just like to point out that contrary to what the article claims, Clarkson did not build Hawthorn's list. He helped develop it, but he didn't personally draft any of the players.

As I've said before, the Hawks will be contending for the wooden spoon in 2018. A return to the top depends on whether Clarkson can help his successors with the next re-build.

IMHO the triumvirate of Clarkson, Wright and Russell are critical to the club's future - assistant coaches and administrators come and go but footy smarts, recruiting nous and medical rehabilitation/preparation are far more critical for success.

Absolutely, what do you think the likelihood is Andy? Thoughts on the list? Surely the chances of anyone replicating that level of success are slim for a while. Lots of competition between GWS, Bulldogs, Saints, Dees, Port etc. should keep premierships evenly spread throughout the next 4-5 years

Yep, you would rather have the kind of incredible success they've had, followed by a few lean years than simply be a nearly-there team. They continue to lose those great coaches and administrators to other clubs though and eventually that will also bite. Clarko really is the figurehead of the club now - even more so than Kevin Sheedy was at Essendon - so his drive and experience should keeps the Hawks from turmoil despite how low they may finish in coming years.

Agree they believe that trading out of the draft is worth what they can bring in via trade but eventually you do need to replenish via the national draft. I also feel like Hawthorn believes they've got an upcoming free agent to commit verbally, otherwise their willingness to trade out of 2016/17 drafts is a bit careless

Hahaha Fifi will just go where the success is but Ted seems solid. Yeh, the Dingley move will be a huge Gamble. St Kilda's move to Seaford wasn't successful but the Hawks feel the gigantic amount of space available and investment will be worth the extra commute

Yep, I wrote this at the start of the week expecting Duryea and Hartung to come back then was pleasantly suprised that Brand is back. Whitecross will be handy too as he was probably the most consistent player during the sputtering last stages of Hawthorn's 2016

Will be interesting to see how they manage the period of transition; A new generation being similarly successful would be simply incredible.

So much negativity for the greatest team of the modern era. What goes up must come down eventually and with such success the Hawks have had, and the way the AFL is designed it was only a matter of time until things levelled out. You take the good with the bad, I wouldn't have had the last 10 years any other way. Such a well run club it won't be that long till they are back again.

Hawthorn will be much less attractive now when they are on the way down. No brainer to choose e.g. St. Kilda over Hawks. Secondly, Fyfe, Martin, Josh Kennedy are restricted free agents. What Hawks can offer with no picks? May be free agents like Rockliff but again why would he go to Hawthorn with realistically no chance for premiership for foreseeable future?

Hawthorn don't do the draft any more, so that's not a concern for next year. Trading out Mitchell and Lewis wasn't just for magic beans. It also freed up a fair bit of salary cap. Add in Hodge and Gibson going at the end of the year, plus an increase in the cap, the Hawks will again be aggressive in free agency. Fyfe, Martin, both Josh Kennedy's are all for grabs this year. Add in one or two of those stars, 2018 can still be (at least) a top-8 year befoe reloading in the draft for 2019.

What concerns me with Hawthorn is they got VFL Park for nix, a perfectly, serviceable ground close enough to where people live. But then they go and decide it is not good enough and want a load of cash to move out to the outer SE industrial estate. On top of this, largely crap recruits of the last few seasons. You could see them being a bottom four club with no end in sight within the next three season. Question is, will Fifi the poodle and Ted the Russian Blue cat renew their memberships?
