Woods and Tedesco leaving Tigers: report

By Steve Zemek / Wire

The Wests Tigers are reportedly set to lose star duo Aaron Woods and James Tedesco next NRL season.

Incumbent NSW fullback Tedesco is on the verge of signing with the Sydney Roosters, while Woods favours linking with Canterbury, according to Fox Sports.

Their losses would a massive blow for coach Ivan Cleary and the club after five-eighth Mitchell Moses agreed to a three-year deal to join Parramatta next year.

It would mean the club had managed to hang onto just one member of the so-called “big four” with halfback Luke Brooks on Tuesday committing to a two-year contract extension.

Woods is reportedly set to agree to terms with Des Hasler’s Bulldogs, a move which would cloud the future of the Bulldogs’ pack, particularly skipper James Graham, who is off contract at the end of 2018.

Graham has admitted he understands the club’s interest in Woods and that he could be forced out next year or in 2019.

It would also leave the Tigers searching for their third captain in four years after Woods took over from Robbie Farah at the beginning of 2016.

Tedesco is considered arguably the best young player in the competition and has fielded interest from several clubs.

Tedesco has a strong relationship with Roosters great Anthony Minichiello, after they had teamed together for Italy during the 2013 World Cup.

The 24-year-old is on record as saying the promise of success rather than money will decide his next club. And he would immediately find himself playing for a team capable of winning a premiership should he link with Trent Robinson’s Tricolours.

Im a Roosters Fan and think Tedesco is the best FB in the comp. However his signing is not that exciting because its sad to see the Tigers decimated like this. However I think Ivan cleary will be able to recruit well for them. Possible signings could be Dugan Cronk Widdop If they could land those 3 then I think they could be a better team than what they were

Hi Tigers supporters. I have been a Dogs supporter since i was a grasshopper. I wouldn't throw in the towel just yet. I would feel confidant with Ivan Cleary at Head Coach. He will attract players. Penrith are pushing their cap and can't keep everyone. They have a massive pool of junior talent and he has ties their, plus a lot of players coming off contract. Cleary will turn your team around and no doubt the CEO and Board are undrer the pump. Everyone from top to bottom will be lifting their game. Wait to see who they will be signing. Tigers will be ok. Cleary has his boot out to kick all the cogs into gear. He will need the supporters support.

Would 35k really be necessary? That seems like a massive overkill.

I'm talking about the hyperbole statements. - The fact is, the Tiger dont have Facilities, dont have the powerbrokers and third party deals these other Sydney Clubs offer This is a cycle. The Wests Tigers were screwed over are mismanged for years but as of right now are in one of their stronger financial positions. They're improving. The Tigers corporate network is growing and is very strong as well. - A contract means nothing, there is no loyality anymore. Seriously? - The money the Tigers offered to Teddy and Woodsy should have been enough to get them to sign contracts immediately (Its not exactly like the dogs or roosters will be giving them less)

Both are free agents to sign for next season with who ever they choose - the problem is the system allowing the signings to occur this early in the season and all the conjecture about signings overshadowing the weekly games - surely Greenberg cannot be serious to say this is good for the game. As for Wests Tigers time for Wests to take complete control and base the team at Campbelltown - get the NSW Government to cough up funds to revamp the Campbelltown ground into a 35k plus all seater stadium- Too much control by the Balmain side of the JV who are broke and too many ex Tigers players having their say or influence at the club even though the Balmain side of the JV will soon have 0 ownership in the JV- Wests will own the JV 100% - Change the name to Macarthur Magpies and be based at Campbelltown and play in black and white

Where to start? Why don't the Tigers have the same facilities, power brokers and third parties that other Sydney clubs have? The answer is probably similar to why their best players continually want to leave the club. Chronic mismanagement.

As a life long Tigers supporter I say this - everyone is to blame for this mess. The board, the coach (we've had a few), the coaches assistants (how many of them have we got?) the players, the strappers, the media, my local publican, the dog next door - yep all accountable. I didn't list the fans - or in this case the great unwashed. Apparently they don't count. So this is how I now feel: After all is said and done I can't believe Tedesco and Woods have had 1M+ contracts per year in front of them from the Tigers but come out and say they want to play with a club that plays in the finals. Did these blokes not play the last number of years with the Tigers? Yes, the Tigers that didn't make the finals. Are they not accountable for the Tigers not making the finals in those years? By their statements they believe the answer is NO. So they believe the reward for failure is 1M+ a season or maybe move on to someone else silly enough to pay it. Blame everyone else. That's easy Woodsy. Good on ya!! I say let them go. Let 'em get the saloon passage to the finals they're craving for. I assume that is the one where the players around them take them there and they go along for the ride. Like the one they expected at the Tigers over the last few years. Off ya go Teddy. Cya Woodsy. If you can get a contract like that go for it. I want blokes who don't play the blame game. Who get good money and get on with it. Yep. I'm over it!!!

So the tigers are losing their best players. These guys didn't get them into the semis last year. And 50% of teams make them.Tedesco will be a big loss but the other 2 are replaceable. Three semi appearances in 16 years is diabolical although they do have the best conversion rate of premierships once they make the semis. One outta three.

What are the Tigers to do? What is their reward for producing four top class players? If they again develop some gun juniors they will be poached the same as the 'big four' just as they are about to play their best footy. System is broken.

He's one of the top 3 props in the comp. Plays big minutes, makes big metres and has an offload in him. It's no coincidence that when he does come off for a spell that the Tigers struggle to get over the advantage line and their defence in the middle gets sloppy. Is he worth a mill a season? Probably not - but then neither are Ben Hunt, Taumalolo, Hayne, DCE, Bird and co. I am a Tigers die hard supporter, and in my view the only players in the comp worth seven figures a season are Thurston, Smith, Cronk, Boyd (Darius, not Shannon!) - halves, five-eighths and fullbacks who can play like a half.

I am Tigers fan and have been all my life, a whole 37 years of it. Not only am I dirty at the Tigers, the NRL have something to answer for. The fact is, the Tiger dont have Facilities, dont have the powerbrokers and third party deals these other Sydney Clubs offer, therefor we are unable to hold onto our high profile players, there needs to be a drafting system used like the AFL otherwise I fear the Tigers will remain towards the bottom of the ladder for sometime yet. Financially the Tigers are not a club that can attract the high profile players. Gone are the days were you could support the players in your teams, my son loves the Tigers because of James Tedesco, as soon as you enjoy supporting the players, they leave. You either support the club itself and don't get to attached to the players as they are soon gone. A contract means nothing, there is no loyality anymore. No pride in the Jersey. The money the Tigers offered to Teddy and Woodsy should have been enough to get them to sign contracts immediately, the fact they didnt agree to sign was the writing on the wall. I will never support another NRL team, but at this stage I am done supporting the NRL in general. The only thing I can do to show this, is switch to another channel when the footy is on.

Woods has to be the most overrated forward in recent memory. Gets the captaincy, then leaves the club like a flog. A million a season for a passenger. I wouldn't pay him a cent over 500k on a good day.

If they lose Teddy after letting go of the young Australian fullback they have in lower grades who is going to Melbourne to be Billys replacement would be so bad after letting go Martin to Penrith and Austin to canberra fifita to Cronulla just bad throw it in if you don't understand talent

Talk about a rebuild required if this happens. Similar to Cleary's Penrith job though isn't it? Got rid of Jennings, Lewis, Grant and Coote, who were all on big bucks, and started from scratch, focussing on youth. Look at them now. Seems he has to do it all again! Good luck Ivan!

Not just the Board. If the CEO is in charge of retaining talent and he loses three of the four key signings while signing Chris McQueen and some under 20's winger to big deals, then he has to be under the hammer as well.
