Cronulla Sharks chariman Damian Keogh resigns after drug charge

By Josh / Expert

Damian Keogh, Chairman of the Cronulla Sharks, has resigned his position after being charged with possession of an illegal substance.

Keogh was reportedly found with a bag of white powder in Woolloomooloo on Friday night, when he was searched by police and charged. Keogh will be required to face court on 30 June.

A police statement said the substance was believed to be cocaine.

Keogh then handed in his resignation to the Sharks last night.

“He expressed great remorse to me that he had let me down personally,” said Sharks CEO Lyall Gorman.

“He’s very distressed about potential outcomes and the impact on the game, the club and his family,” Gorman said.

“There’s a whole lot of challenging things to be worked on through here.

“Clearly these things aren’t great for the club or the game but let’s be clear these are allegations.”

The club issued a short statement on Saturday morning:

“Our Club advises that Chairman Damian Keogh has stepped aside in his role to allow him to address allegations of possession of an illegal substance.

“Given the challenging personal nature of this matter, Damian is not currently available for comment.”

NRL CEO Todd Greenberg confirmed that he was aware of the situation.

“We are aware of an incident which involves the Sharks chairman,” said Greenberg.

“We are awaiting further details from the Sharks about what has occurred.”

Neither alcohol nor cigarettes are particularly addictive. Sugar on the other hand is. Just take a look around you for the evidence!

Lets see now, one??? That have been charged in the last few days, SKD, Bromwich, Proctor and Sharks chairman Damian Keogh. Is that enough for a few days in the NRL drug saga. And if you think that these clowns are the only ones then you are delusional! I'm not labeling the whole organisation but by gee if so many are charged in 2 days, I wonder how many more are doing it and are on drugs???

I get what you're saying but it still surprises me how many people take the moral high ground saying these guys have somehow failed society and are morally bankrupt while simultaneously saying they should have just gone out on the drink.

Interesting discussion fellas. I think it shows, like most things in life we all choose where we draw the line. For some alcohol and tobacco are the only "ok" drugs. Other people like weed but not the chemical stuff, while others are more tolerant. Where I think we run into problems (like most things) is when we get people saying "I'm right and you're wrong". From my point of view, morally speaking there's no difference between drinking beer, smoking weed, snorting coke, taking pills, etc. Of course, legally speaking there are huge differences but they are completely arbitrary and manufactured. So for mine, legally these blokes have done the wrong thing. Morally, who cares?

Haha...I know. Then this bloke has the nerve to be condescending to the rest of us. It's these absolute attitudes that make any meaningful discussion about issues like this impossible.

So the conclusion is pot is bad but not as bad as alcohol, therefore ban alcohol?

This is a right wing religious conservative law and order Government. Sydney was voted the safest city in the world two months before they introduced the lock out laws. These laws have been so devastating on the night life of the city that they clearly are now fabricating drama to justify their existence. Whatever Keogh did he was very unlikely to be any danger to law and order in the city. SKD pretty much the same. But they won't be happy until the city is shut down completely.

seems you are assuming lots of people are not ignorant. they are. drugs are everywhere and lots of good honest clean living people sometimes indulge. but I think you know that, and I am just lending some weight to your point.

The Kenny-Dowell and Keogh arrests have many questions surrounding these - Firstly the Police were contacted to come and search Kenny-Dowell(by whom and what for) and as the Channel 9 video showed Keogh was pulled up by Police inside the particular pub when going to the Toilet(were the Police also tipped off as no other patrons were searched ??)- The Police upon searching both Kenny-Dowell and Keogh found the same similar size and quantity of cocaine in the same similar size resealable plastic bag on their possession - Coincidence I think not- something not quiet kusher about these two arrests. Whereas Bromwich and Proctor were not arrested although it is a criminal offence to self or attempt to self administer a prohibited drug.
