Highlights: Carlton Kreuz to give Giants the Blues

By Tim Miller / Editor

Carlton have produced one of the great upsets of the year, stunning the GWS Giants in a one-point victory that will be talked about among Blues fans for years to come.

A Zac Fisher behind with two minutes on the clock gave the Blues the lead, and a spirited GWS attack was cut off by a Blues defence that was magnificent all day.

Despite controlling large parts of the first half, the Giants found themselves unable to make inroads in their forward 50, with their dangerous forward line quelled by a disciplined Blues’ defensive effort.

And the unlikely source of former Western Bulldog Liam Jones was at the centre of it, the much-maligned Blue continuing his stellar VFL form to finish with 6 marks, three of them intercepts, as well as curbing the influence of Jonathon Patton.

There were no such issues for the Blues up forward, whose speed on the rebound continually caught the Giants defence out, with David Cunningham in particular dangerous inside attacking 50 with a pair of goals.

The arm wrestle continued in the third term, with the Blues hanging onto their slim lead despite the Giants throwing everything at them.

A scintillating passage of play where the Giants broke from defensive 50 and overcame some desperate Blues defence for a Matt de Boer goal in the square looked more like the Giants of old, but the Blues’ pressure was telling, with their trademark running and pinpoint kicking largely hampered.

With the margin just four points at three-quarter time, it was set to be a last quarter for the ages.

Dylan Shiel put the Giants in front early with a clever snap, but a former Giant in Jed Lamb responded for the Blues in his first game for the year.

Shiel was enormous, but so was Matthew Kreuzer for the Blues, the ruckman marking his 150th game with arguably his best performance yet.

Points were traded, blows were struck, and the Blues had a one-point lead with a minute on the clock.

And there it stayed, the Giants’ last attack stymied to send the fans into raptures. 17th had beaten 1st.

What else in this crazy season?

Final score
Carlton Blues 10.11.71
GWS Giants 9.16.70

Well said Dougie. He has been a much maligned player by Carlton supporters as well as supporters from other clubs. I must admit I have not been a fan of his due to his inconsistent performances when given senior game exposure. I am however impressed and happy that he has embraced and is excelling in a very different role. With Rowe out for the season his AFL future can be extended with good consistent football. Maybe he can become Carlton's Tom Lonergan - let's hope so.

I'm genuinely happy to see Jones play well and it was interesting to hear Paul Roos say before the game he's a terrific bloke and has playing well in the VFL for 18 months. I think with guys like Jones, you've got to keep playing him this year to help inform your decision whether to give him another contract or not. Well done Carlton against GWS. It's an interesting season!

I am loving this season. Well done to Carlton. Bolton has got this team playing good hard honest football. They play as a team and are hard to play against. I saw them against North, when we were 45 points up, come back from the dead and almost pinch the game. Carlton won the game because of their pressure acts andnever say die attitude. They may not have won the clearances but they applied constant pressure. It was great to see Liam Jones find his niche in defense. He is a good ball reader. Also well done to Brisbane. It was good to see them have a big win. The other day I read a comment that said Carlton and Brisbane were so far behind the rest of the AFL. This season has shown that anyone can win on any given day. I think both teams will get more wins before the end of the season.

I was rapt with the win yesterday. I think it was our best win of the season. Liam Jones held up all day down back He went at 92% efficiency. He had the right attitude, that being see ball get ball. If he plays like this every week he will be a sold addition to our defense. He reads the play much better as a defender. He always seemed to lack confidence as a forward yet as a defender he has so much composure. I noticed that Patton and Cameron were down, but full credit has to go to our defense. We kept the Giants to their lowest score this season. Cuningham was also a big plus as his two early goals gave us confidence. He is part of a whole group of youngsters coming through who work their guts out. Kreuzer is definitely having his best season yet. He played a great game yesterday. He took Mumford on and beat him. Bolton has not only gotten the best out of our first tier players, but he also gotten the best results from our second and third tier players too. We are getting more goals from our on ballers. Bolton has ensured versatility in our talls, as they can play offense and defense. I was happy that when the Giants hit the front in the final quarter that we kept our composure. It was great that we didn't let another opportunity slip. Marchbank is one of the best marks in the AFL. He reads the play well. Plowman is the second best pick up from GWS behind Marchbank. Well done to Gibbs on his professionalism. Even though he wanted to leave he has slogged his guts out for the club. I think this was our best win of the season.

Very cold hearted comment about Hawks...they are a champion team and if...a big if...they miss out this year they'll be back bigger and better. We were privileged to witness what they achieved and very sad to see them miss out.

Adelaide will be the new north. They're never going to win it. Could do without seeing North, West Coast, Sydney and Hawthorn in finals for the next year or two

I saw them against North, when we were 45 points up, come back from the dead and almost pinch the game. It was admirable the way they were able to work their way back into contest. Good on Bolton for working out the right position for Liam Jones. He looks rock solid down back. Yesterday Carlton won because of their pressure acts and never say die attitude. Also well done to Brisbane. It was great to see them get a big win. The other day Matty B wrote that Carlton and Brisbane were so far behind the rest. Carlton are definitely not that far off it and Brisbane should get another couple of wins before the end of the season.

He'll be back all too soon spouting nonsense about SOS being no good and Boltons's honeymoon being over.

If Jones continues his form and it was a choice between the 2 Rowe is in trouble, especially as MacReadie looks to increase his game time but when Rowe got hurt the noises were positive for him being retained, perhaps they might offer him an assistant coaching job at Northern bluesto look after him?

... but after a [Carlton] win he goes missing
Top it off with the putrid effort from his one year wonder side and he's sure to be very scarce.

Could make for an interesting decision at the end of the year as both Jones and Rowe are out of contract. If Jones continues to develop as a full-back then it's possible Rowe mat have sadly played his last AFL game. Jones being 4 years younger would surely get the nod as I doubt they can offer contracts to both of them.

Agree with all that Col, I would add that if Jones plays like he did yesterday he would be an upgrade on Rowe as he looks to Mark and attack more

I don't think we will see him on this post. Usually after a loss he is the first to post with his "sad and tragic" comments but after a win he goes missing. It probably takes him a few days to get out of bed after a Carlton win. A great team effort and well deserved win by the Blues. It shows if they can keep up that defensive pressure for 4 quarters then they are capable of beating any side. What a great effort SOS and Bolton have done in building a great backline. Docherty and Simpson have been a great duo for a couple of years and Rowe despite his limits always gave 100%. It has been the additions of Plowman, Marchbank, Weitering, Williamson and Alex Silvagni with backup from Macreadie that turned them into a solid six. Rowe has gone for the year but Liam Jones performance yesterday suggests he can slot comfortably into that six and with Ciaran Byrne playing his first game in the reserves after a knee injury things look even better. They kept GWS to their lowest score of the season. The usual midfield of Murphy, Gibbs, Cripps, Ed Curnow and Kreuzer have performed solidly all year and young Cunningham is improving every game. Kreuzer is showing what an injury free period can do and not only is he competing well in the ruck but his around the ground work has been outstanding. He would certainly be in AA consideration.. The forward line is still a work in progress but with big Levi kicking more goals and Wright bobbing up for a couple each game along with contributions from Jack Silvagni and Charlie Curnow things are looking up. Hopefully big McKay can slot in next year at CHF. I am sure Petrevski-Seton will be back in the seniors next week. All Carlton supporters want for the rest of the season is to see the team bring that same 4 quarter effort into every game and a few more wins should be possible. Pick up a good quality midfielder in the draft and maybe in the trade period and we should expect see a bigger improvement next year. It doesn't happen too often but the 2 bottom sides both had great wins and the Lions also showed that if you go into a game with the right attitude anything is possible. They also showed with their senior players playing well and supported by their improving youngsters that they will be moving up the ladder over the next couple of years.

Great effort from the blues another good step forward. Cuningham adds his name to the list of impressive youngsters Silvagni has found in the draft, Marchbank and Plowman continue to impress as high quality defenders to join Docherty and Weitering as the basis of our defence for the next decade and now Jones looks like he could be a much more attacking option than Rowe as the big bodied defender (although I'll wait to see how he goes next week before I get too excited). Throw in McKay being named in the best for the 2's and it has been a pretty good week.

Tired of seeing North in finals so having Richmond and Carlton in the eight will be great.
