West Coast Eagles vs Geelong Cats: AFL live scores, blog

By Mat Datson / Roar Guru

The West Coast Eagles and Geelong Cats will clash at Domain Stadium with both teams fresh off the bye looking to jump start their second half of the season. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match starting from 8:10pm (AEST).

Both sides are coming into this game with complete opposite form lines with West Coast having lost their last three matches while Geelong winning their last three matches.

Before the break the Eagles put in another bad performance away from home losing by three points to Gold Coast.

They will be without spearhead Josh J Kennedy once again which was their downfall against the Suns not being able to find a focal point up forward.

This will be the first time in three matches that Geelong have left Simmonds Stadium after putting together three impressive victories against fellow top eight contenders Western Bulldogs, Adelaide and Port Adelaide.

Adam Simpson will be looking for a big game from his midfield brigade going up against Dangerwood and now younger Selwood brother Scott who has brought the pressure in his first three games back laying a huge 44 tackles.

West Coast have dropped another two senior players this week with Josh Hill and Sam Butler not making the cut and making way for young key defender Tom Barrass and medium defender Tom Cole.

Geelong will go into the game without key forward Tom Hawkins who was suspended for a jumper punch on Matt Crouch before the bye and will be resting Mark Blicavs for the trip. They welcome back ruckmen Rhys Stanley and small defender Jed Bews.

Prediction
This game is a tough one to decide who will win with both sides missing their best forward. West Coast at home are formidable and Geelong not being at Simmonds Stadium which they play better than elsewhere makes this intriguing. I am going to side with West Coast by the barest of margins with zero confidence at all.

West Coast by 2.

Don its fair enough to think Geelong will come out firing at home after their precious egos were shattered by west coast. I hope freo prove me wrong as I see Geelong as the most over rated team out there.

Nothing learnt from last night. Both teams win at home. Both teams are average on the road. Both teams are scarily overrated. Carlton are much closer to a flag than both of them.

Please refer to my comments where I lied about anything, Gene. Of course, I can link comments of you being caught out in a lie if you like, but I've already humiliated you enough; along with your poor maths skills, generally knowledge about the Cats tribunal habits, poor tipping and general knowledge about anything football. As apposed to me who did get the Hawkins' outcome correct, can perform basic arithmetic, understands game structures (instead of just crying and blaming everything on Longergan) and tips like an absolute legend. About the only thing I've got wrong is the Cats losing by 13 points instead of the 10 I predicted. I promise I won't ever comment directly to you, Gene, unless of course you want to chat with me direct. I just find you a little simple, that's all. That and I don't like liars! Now go away.

Oh well, maybe Eagles are not mummies boys now, but i guess they'll still be flat track bullies until they bring that intensity against a good side in an away game? a few games at home now may help their win-loss ratio, but maybe not their away form. Is it a re-booted Eagles to finals now or just another aberration? Mitchell doesnt deserve to be rubbed out by mrp after nearly being rubbed out by selwood? Shuey might cop one, but good to see him and a few others unleash their inner dog! I thought eagles 2nd tier stood up tonight, finally, particularly Duggan-finally got to see his potential, just needs more composure, but some great 2nd even 3rd attempts, one was exceptional. Cole handled himself well. Cant wait to see Venables and Partington hit the paddock soon. Jetta got so hot he nearly set his own pants on fire at one stage!? Big Ezy got the hang of it again, welcome back. Gov may be a good interceptor but he was a lousy kick on goal, needs to work on that. there are a lot of wayward kicks on goal these days, wonder if its all the gut running, weak and wobbly legs? the cats didnt give up, to their credit, it couldve easily swung their way and nearly did, given the hefty margin at one stage. Eagles took their foot off the gas and leaked a couple of easy goals.

And by the way all 3 teams that beat the crows lost the following week. Seems they cant maintain the intensity.

Win some, lose some. Had hoped our dud coach would have figured out how to win after a bye, 7 byes - 7 straight loses. The standard of umpiring, both ways, was hideous and unacceptable, that is all I will say on that. A thirteen point loss on the road with one man down for nearly the whole game and two men down for a half is not the end of the world.

Spot on about Dangerfield Don, how many times was he prepared to chase Yeo?or apply defensive pressure? If he's not winning possession forward of centre he becomes a liability. The way we played selwood was fantastic, Mitchell suckered him with banter while hutchings made sure he had no time or space frustrating him into Cheap shots and playing for frees.

Lonergan is not as slow as some. Henderson, Harry T, Koldodjashni, Tomahawk are all slow moving barges. However that wasn't our problem tonight. Most of the team just didn't bring any effort. That's a team ethos and coaching problem. They need to have a list of non-negotiables to be a member of the team - effort, tackling, chasing, running to space. While players like Guthrie and Motlop keep getting a game forget about other players buying in.

Dangerwood tried their guts out but can't say the same for several other Cats who looked like they were dogging it. Guthrie has to be dropped to the VFL. He just isn't interested in doing any hard work. Murdoch is similar and should be dropped. Motlop is a slacker as well. Bews is nowhere near AFL standard, is serioysly lacking skill. The players need to get together and discuss what level of effort is required to get a place in the team. It ain't going to be helped by Chris Scott because he has always let it be known that mediocrity is good enough. First things first - Guthrie haa to be dropped to let others know that half-arsed efforts are not to be tolerated.

he admits running on emotions, but is clearly a confidence player, which has its ups+downs. like mitchell seems to be able to warp time...?

A stifling defensive game plan frustrating Geelong into stupid mistakes from perceived pressure. Nullify Tuohy, frustrate selwood and set Dangerfield a dangerous opponent, simple but effective.
