Queensland selectors set to make shock call for Origin 3

By News / Wire

Daly Cherry-Evans’ outstanding club form for Manly might not be enough to get him a chance at Origin redemption, with Queensland selectors reportedly set to slot Ben Hunt into the side for State of Origin III.

A News Corp Australia report suggests the Maroons might pull yet another selection shock, opting for the resurgent Broncos half over Cherry-Evans.

The Courier Mail reports that Queensland are also expected to name Melbourne Storm young gun Cameron Munster in their team for Origin III, bringing the number of rookies they have blooded in this series to eight.

If Hunt is selected to make his Origin debut for the Maroons it will come just one month after he was dropped to the Queensland Cup to play for Ipswich by Broncos coach Wayne Bennett.

It is understood Maroons coach Kevin Walters has yet to decide on Johnathan Thurston’s replacement at five-eighth but is leaning towards Munster due to his existing combinations with Melbourne Storm teammates Billy Slater, Cooper Cronk and Cameron Smith.

Agreed mate, if he didn't play at manly the talk of back flipping wouldn't be issue, look at the back flipping Q's go, won 10 outstanding 11 series using such a principle, if they lose, well then. It's unfortunate to be discriminated for a club, honestly.!

Maybe Oingo's wife is bonking DCE and has finally found a real man and is just putting Oingo off the scent (again)!

Then again maybe he's not, and that is the problem.

Then why do Inglis and Papalii get picked? They both turned their backs on deals with other clubs. I don't think it's got anything to do with turning his back on the Titans and more to do with his fit with the rest of the team.

Some decent Manly fans who supported Barrett , DCE, Bozo and others like Api were shouted down and abused on their "fan" site. Plenty of fools at every club. I was banished from the forum because I had the cheek to ridicule a "fan" who declared that the Eagles were certain to get the wooden spoon unless their hooker Api was dropped. Api just happens to be one of the most valuable forwards in the game and a major reason we are in the top 4. Plenty were declaring the club was stuffed and have shown themselves to be fools who aren't happy to be reminded of their abusive disloyalty and ludicrous predictions. Zorba Peters summed it up "Dummies and cowards who don't know the game"

The last three years is not a fair comparison, for two full seasons DCE had all sorts of issues with injuries and a rebuilding and losing team. Hunt had the benefit of a winning team and a stable club for those two years . Career stats would be a better guide. DCE doesn't run as much these days and I suspect he is under instructions to play the way he is. I believe he will run more if needed in the big games. DCE played out of his skin in two GF'S as well. Hunt is a good player but your comparisons are unfair.

Get over it KingCowboy. Fair dinkum this issue gets boring. So many other players took advantage of the same loophole that nobody now discusses. Tallis, the self appointed moral guardian of Queenslanders, dudded St George by failing to meet his contract obligations sitting out the year and pouting because he couldnt get the courts to release him for Brisbane's big bucks. There's a lot of hypocrisy in this whole issue. But lets wait and see how Queensland fare without DCE. Lets wait to hear the recriminations over what is a selection bungle.

The QLD culture would appear to be an all inclusive thing , not just the current regime. I read something quite a while ago , that implied Lewis was pretty filthy on DCE for the way he dealt with it all . I said to my son at the time , that I doubted he would ever pull on a maroon jumper again. Going back on your word certainly isn't regarded as petty by some , even in these days of limited loyalties.

TS, true. But seriously, if I was DCE, I reckon it might be an idea to skip playing for them all together in the future. He is on a hiding to nothing. I think that over the next few years QLD will struggle. If you look at this series, bar the second half of Game 2 where NSW turned off thinking they had done enough, NSW have been pretty dominant this series. NSW have a younger and more skillful team across the park with great depth. The QLD old guard are still hanging in there at the moment, just, but the ongoing departure of senior players will see a QLD team we are see now fade even further for a few years to come. And who will QLD blame when they are losing? DCE. He is there scapegoat. On a hiding to nothing. Just get the Manly doctors to get him to limp off the last game before Origin selection, rule him out, miraculously appear after the Origin game for Manly, repeat, then repeat again. He'll go OK with the Kangaroos though, the Turbo brothers, Woods, Klemmer. Tedesco, and co will make him feel at home.

Morgan will be scoring so many tries - or setting them up - he won't get the opportunity to defend. but if he does he's a big unit. Would you rather he play 5/8 and run at turnstiles Maloney all night?

Inglis did the dirty on the Broncos and Papalii did the dirty on the Eels. Didn't seem to worry the QLD selectors.

But he didn't backflip on the Queensland Origin side. It was the Titans and I agree the Titans would be mad to give him another opportunity. But he didn't look Kevin Walters or Lockyer or Cam Smith or anyone else to do with the Origin side in the eye and backflip. So yes, if the Queensland selectors and coach are using DCE's not signing with the Titans as a reason not to pick the in form player in the comp then they are being petty and foolhardy. If they think Hunt will do a better job, good luck to them. Anyway, Hunt's been picked now. And as a NSW fan I'm far, far, far more comfortable with Morgan starting and Hunt (maybe) coming off the bench than I would be with DCE in either role.

I agree with that up to a point and if Hunt was in anywhere near the sort of form that DCE was in then selecting based on those personal relationships make sense. But Hunt's not in anywhere near the form of DCE, who is arguably the best player in the comp at the moment. Hunt has been playing reggies. Do Smith and Cronk and the non-Broncos boys have any more of a relationship with Hunt? For the good of the team shouldn't the onus be on the senior players to put the past behind and accept the far better player into the team rather than forcing coach and selectors to go for someone not in great nick and susceptible to pressure to play his first Origin game in a game 3 decider?

News of Hunts selection has ruined a perfectly good day for me. Ben Hunt is a moderately good club half. DCE is an outstanding club half . Yes DCE has a question mark over him at Origin level but he can take the pressure and has a real chance to redeem himself. He is my choice for the bench. Ben Hunt copes with pressure as well as a ripe grape. On the bench and stay there please. I really hope I am wrong . I would love to see him shine but the images of him under pressure dashing around like a headless chook , passing to no one and kicking into every opponents legs well up and I need to lie down. Please leave him on the bench Kevin.

That's not the same logic though... we're not talking about dropping anyone because Hunt isn't currently in the team. If you're going to pick Hunt on 2015 form, then you may as well pick Justin Hodges for the vacant centre position! Anyways, please pick Hunt...as a NSWelshmen I'd be over the moon, just like when we found out they didn't pick Billy in game 1.

I'll be putting one down too on NSW...in the modern game bench does matter...it was the guy off the bench who created the winning try in Origin 2 and I was hoping he'd be coming off the bench in Origin 3 too.
