TELL US: Is Ben Hunt the right man for the Origin decider?

By Riordan Lee / Editor

He’s no Johnathan Thurston, but does he have a series winning performance in him?

When the Maroons legend was forced to abandon his Origin swansong, all eyes turned to the Queensland selectors to see who they’d pick to fill his boots.

Somewhat controversially, Ben Hunt was given the nod over Daly Cherry-Evans as a halves replacement – a move that raised a few eyebrows given the Brisbane halfback was running out for Ipswich less than a month ago.

With Queensland still yet to announce where Hunt will take the field, we want to know:

Did the Queensland selectors get it right selecting Ben Hunt for the State of Origin decider? Where would you play him?

We’ll be tackling this, as well as other big Origin questions with Roar expert Mary K on Roar LIVE.

Get your answers in the comments and we’ll try to get to as many as possible throughout the show!

Roar Live will be streamed this afternoon at around 5:45pm on The Roar’s Facebook page. It will also be available as a podcast on Soundcloud and iTunes.

Ben Hunt has been pilloried (and quite justifiably, IMO) long before he signed with St. Merge. He's never been a consistently NRL level player.

thank you - he will not play a vital role without an injury to someone

I hope Hunt plays well and crosses for the winning try .... he has been unjustifiably bashed from pillar to post since signing with the Dragons .

We will not know if Ben Hunt was the right man until full time. I have some doubts about his fitness. The question is. Could BH go 80 'of Origin if required? Whereas ,DCE is 100% fit. I would liked to have seen DCE in the 17, but it would not be practical to have both DCE and DH. The Blues have genuine fitness problems. Frizell will probably need a new rib protection cushion. Another part of his rib cage is injured? Cordner is having ancient Tantric treatment to get the electricity flow in his calf. Based on HGA and fewer injury problems: Q by 8.

No I don't think Hunt deserved to be there. I think it came down to him and DCE and the votes obviously went his way. DCE has been well ahead in form and statistics this year not to mention he has played off the bench for qld before. In fact his first game he came off the bench and made a clean break than put a grubber in for Smith to score so he has runs on the board. Hopefully the decision doesn't come back to bite them. I also don't accept the notion it doesn't really matter as its the bench. Bench is ao important in the modern game and especially a battle like Origin. Morgan came off the bench last origin and came up with the winning pass for Gagais try.

He's already played 3 times for Australia and turned one of those games for his team when he came off the bench. Hunt will be ok.

I wonder whether Morgan would have gotten the 6 if he hadn't had the Raiders to make him look good on Saturday with their seeming allergy to kick pressure? I wonder if Hunt would have gotten picked if he hadn't had the Raiders to make him look good last week with their seeming allergy to kick pressure?

I posted earlier on the qld team page. The Hunt selection seems the equivalent of cricket's pick a local lad for 12th man duties. It's more than likely irrelevant who has that "role". His predecessors have been quality players who have demanded a run in the middle in a "makeshift" position just to get them on the field. Cronk, Morgan, etc. With no one seemingly as demanding of a squeeze into the game it's a bit of a redundant position. They won't be coming on as a lock replacement. Hess will, simple as that. If a back or Smith gets injured (including HIA) he'll get a run. That's about it. Anyway, I'd be filthy if I was DCE. He deserved the call up above anyone else. He'll be there in the halves next year. Pretty ironic how qlders (led by the courier mail I reckon) have spent the best part of 10 years bagging out nsw selections year after year when qld selectors barely had to make a call. As soon as they start having to make calls they are average half the time. I'll put my hand up for that job. It's actually not that hard tbh.

QLD spent vastly more of the last 12 years with Slater at FB than Boyd.

No but in the last 12 years QLD also had Scott, Inglis, Thurston and Boyd. You cant remove that quality of player, run the same template and expect the same result. Game one was excellent example of that. So the last 12 years come next Wednesday is completely irrelevant because 1/3 of what made that template so good will be sitting on the sidelines.

You are right, it is smart to judge them all over one performance instead of the last 12 years. You must at the top of your field with your thinking! With your great thinking, Daley is the greatest coach ever in the game, you know, off game one!

Pretty fair to say the Qld selectors, coaching staff and senior players know their footy. They've a job in mind and determined Hunt the best to get it done. He's the right man.

Hunt is replacing Morgan on the utility bench - not JT. QLD selectors have picked his NQ teammate in Morgan to fill JT's boots. Some more pertinent questions to consider. > Can NSW replicate perfect performance in Game 1? > Will injuries cruel NSW chance of victory? > Will Daley survive if NSW lose another series again?

I think DCE needed to start, or not be included. I do not think that Hunt was the main for the bench though. I would've liked DCE starting at 6, Morgan in the centres and Munster on the bench. Mind you, I think Munster is a better option at centre than Morgan, but with the form Morgan is in - the more minutes he plays the better.
