Why we don't like Bernard Tomic

By David Holden / Roar Guru

Bernard Tomic has got it wrong. After his straight set loss to Mischa Zverev at Wimbledon, he commented that the reason the Australian public didn’t like him was because we were jealous of the life he was living.

He could use cash to buy a cash or house while most of us struggle to get a loan. But, he’s got it wrong.

We like Adam Scott, we like Jason Day, we like Matthew Dellavedova, and I wouldn’t mind their career earnings which so far dwarf Bernard Tomic’s. No, we dislike him for a number of reasons, the largest one being that he is obviously talented but doesn’t have the fighting spirit or desire to give 100 per cent.

Lleyton Hewitt won Wimbledon and Pat Rafter went down in a classic to Goran Ivanisevic. Both of these players would freely admit that they weren’t the most talented on tour but they fought hard and never gave up. Bernard may continue to play on the ATP tour but the current Davis Cup captain must be close to putting a permanent marker through his name.

The reality is at the moment Tomic can do as he says, getting into the main draw at ATP events and having a crack if he wants. His ranking dropped to 59 just before Wimbledon and his opening round loss would likely means he drops further into the 60s.

It is conceivable that the ranking slide continues and that Tomic falls outside automatic qualification for tournaments. If this happens, its unlikely that he would swallow his pride and go through qualifying. So, I’d expect in the next six months we will see a renewed focus or possibly an exit altogether from the game.

We don’t like Tomic because he gives up. We also don’t like him because he has continually snubbed Tennis Australia, which has provided him with funding early on, and a number of former players who have offered assistance. Say what you like about Nick Kyrgios, but its obvious he has a mountain of respect for Hewitt and, injuries permitting, will most likely make the top ten or even higher.

Finally, we don’t like Tomic because he shows no respect to his sport. If he is bored and wants to stop playing, that’s fine. Stop playing. Don’t be bored and continue to play on, deciding when to try and when to throw a match. The poor people who can’t splash cash on a house may have paid money to be a spectator and are not getting any value from that lack of effort.

So, Bernard, if you are reading, you are wrong. Your lifestyle has nothing to do with why we don’t like you. There are many, many other reasons why.

As things have unraveled for him, it might be time to consider what role his parents may have played in 'pushing' him and whether the guy has depression - I say this seriously. His behavior may be the tell tale signs of some more deeper personal issues that need attention.

I really am surprised how lenient the tennis officials are! The fine was only a drop in the ocean compared to the amount of earnings! The tennis events that have Tomic could potentially loose money as people are sick of all the drama. I forked out a hefty amount to see him play, never again as it was just a hit and miss affair that showed how overpaid he is. Ofcourse tennis fans pay a lot, and most are not rich to just see a lax performance. I know many people who think australian tennis is an embarrassment and I for one cannot understand why there is not a six month ban from all atp or itf events for this. The small fines here and there wont deter poor behaviour, when people are paid to do a job full professional conduct should be included. To just admit being bored is very much disrespectful to the huge opportunity to play at Wimbledon.

We don't like him because of what he says. It's a bit bizarre but it seems like he gets annoyed that there is more media attention, albeit negative ones, on Kyrgios than himself. So he comes out and says something outrageous just to stir us up. If he just played the way he plays and keeps his mouth shut, that will get rid of half the negativity already. Not sure why he's doing it because it's not doing his endorsement deals any favours.

I am surprised a "Bringing the game into disrepute" clause isn't part of the Code of Conduct for the professional tour. Then again, perhaps admin see any publicity as good for the game. I am not so sure.

"He could use cash to buy a cash or house" I saw this one first time through, was going to let it slide, but since you asked... ;-)

Thanks Dad I'd for having the finger on the Australian pulse. Please ignore those who don't!

I can only take responsibility for why I don't like him. I watched both Murray and Rafa, who were injured, leave it all out there on the court rather than make excuses and retire. Bernard just doesn't have the bottle to reach his full potential. Yes right now he has money in the bank and has young ladies hovering around. But with no income coming in he'll find very few of them will be impressed with a poor almost ran. It's bad enough not having respect for your peers, but this young man has no respect for himself. We will watch him take his place in the book of "could have beens".

Could not agree more David. I have just started planing a trip to the Australian Open, but I am not thrilled at forking over my hard earned to watch Bernie prance around giving 40% effort just to pick up a cool 6 figure cheque. The organisers of the Australia open should ban this joker. Or better still, if the punters like me buy a ticket to a show court, and Bernie happens to be scheduled, we should get a full refund. If I had the vaguest clue how to use twitter I might try and get a movement going to ban Bernie from the Open. #BanBernie

Only thing I can spot is the misuse of "its" for "it's" in a couple of places - as in "its unlikely" and "its obvious" when in both cases it should be "it's." ( Forgive me: I'm a grammar pedant :) .) Hardly a deal breaker when it comes to the point your making.

Agree with you, P Air. With most ATP tournaments having a 64 draw, it won't be too long before he is struggling to get in the main draw.

Mitcher, I'd appreciate it if you let me know what was incorrect. Just read it again and I'm struggling....

I'd have thought a judgemental article about a bloke not putting in the required effort to get things right, would at least have been proofread.

The only reason Tomic has earnt so much is because he is Australian and much of the recent time he was Australia's top ranked tennis player and gets much bigger sponsorship because of that, if he was from a smaller poorer country his earnings would be restricted to just above prize money. If you take his career prize money 5 million, and then you have to take into account that also has to pay for all the expenses, air travel, accomodation, coach,, medical expenses, entourage he would hardly be considered a wealthy sports star. If Tomic had to compete with with two top Australian ranked players above him who were more appealing to sponsors he would have been overlooked. He only has Kyrgios recently ranked above him who is also not exactly appealing to sponsors. Imagine if Tomic had to compete with Rafter and Hewitt being well above him in the rankings. Pat Rafter has earnt heaps of money after his tennis career which shows the value of maintaining an appealing image. I think Tomic is delusional and will be brought crashing back to reality very shortly. When the finances dry up he willl look at this stupid behaviour and regret it for the rest of his life.

Pity tournament organisers don't just put a big mark through his name on the basis that they can't sell tickets to any game he plays as they can't guarantee that he won't just throw the game. His smug arrogance, and his finances, would quickly disappear.
