Tony Archer admits Soliola should have been sent off

By News / Wire

NRL referees boss Tony Archer has admitted Canberra’s Sia Soliola should have sent off for a sickening hit on Billy Slater which knocked out the Melbourne superstar.

The Raiders forward’s late swinging arm to Slater’s head wasn’t enough to convince referee Matt Cecchin to give Soliola his marching orders early in the second half of Saturday’s clash at GIO Stadium.

The high shot ended Slater’s night, but the Storm rallied with Cameron Smith also going off injured, edging out the Raiders 20-14 in a gritty battle.

“It’s important to note that Sia Soliola is on report and the matter will be addressed by the Match Review Committee,” Archer said in a statement

“But based on a review of the tackle, the incident did meet the indicators of a send off.

“The match officials always have the option of a send off and I expect them to use it in instances of serious foul play.”

Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy also disagreed with the decision, saying the tackle “wasn’t great”.

“If it’s not a sending off then I don’t know what is a sending off,” Bellamy said.

He compared it with Cameron Munster’s sin-binning in the final minute for a professional foul.

“An incident like that happens, and you’re on report so he’s going to come under scrutiny without doubt, but then we lose a player for 10 minutes for holding on to someone,” Bellamy said.

“I’m not sure that’s right and fair. At the end of the day the decision was made and we play on.

“(But) to me that seems just a little bit not quite right.”

Soliola’s lucky escape was one of a number of controversial calls throughout the match, with Raiders coach Ricky Stuart sharing the club’s fans anger in a firey post-match press conference.

“Why don’t the NRL get the referees to come in and answer some of these questions too?” Stuart said.

“Or Tony Archer? When do they ever have to face any accountability?”

actually, if you read it slowly, you'll see it is KBG, but let's not worry about literacy. whether the bloke is the nicest person that ever walked the earth or hitler's evil twin is utterly irrelevant. or please, direct me to the rules and regulations that provide the good bloke defence. you attack me re the facts and then come up with this nonsense. the act on the field that is the only relevant matter was an act of a thug, or if you prefer and believe him not to be a thug, despite the sickening evidence to the contrary, an act of thuggery. watch the intent on faces? lord spare me. shall we go and sit at the bottom of the garden and play with the fairies? you think there is much difference in the look on a face between a bloke going for a big legit tackle and an illegal shot? please describe the differences. that pretty much takes the cake for lunacy. talk about not worrying about the facts and making half-arsed decisions. your rubbish aspires to half-arsed. i missed the hit on bird (i hope i have made it clear i am very much in favour of wiping all acts of thuggery out of the game so more than likely would agree with you on that) so i can't comment but again, it is not relevant. each act should be looked at separately and judged accordingly. i really don't care if soliola is the second coming. he should not be playing football for a very long time.

Hey guys this guy thinks slowing down the play the ball is against the rules , yes it is if it's too slow. If it's just slow enough than it's legal lol , yeh let's everyone jump of a tackled player as quickly as possible An let's let the attacking team get a roll on and smash thru our ruck cus u know slowing the play the ball down is just stupid especially against a Hughe forward pack ..... oh hang on no it's actually pretty smart you clown lol , when you hear stupidity you have to sometimes just go does he even play the game ?

are you ex KGB? You don't worry about the facts just get a general impression and make a half-arsed decision. Sia is about the nicest person you'd ever meet, and as far as thugs go he's a 0.2/10. Watch the intent to hurt on many players faces, and go from there. Take a look at Taupau's hit on Bird - reminiscent of a coward punch - which got 1 whole week. You're a very poor judge, so I hope you aren't one!

It's funny that the team that gets penalised first is usually the team copping all the crap from the Queensland/Storm players. At least they could penalise them sometimes!

I'd rather be hit by a 125kg soft bit of blubber than a 100kg piece of metal. You're not a bully just because you carry weight mate - that's weird!

Archer should have stayed right out of it. What a fool. I wish he'd tell his charges to keep sides on side and to stop wrestling in tackles. Maybe try to not look biased?

Storm slowing down the play ball - this is the biggest issue in the game at the moment. Not some random late body check gone wrong. I repeat - STORM SLOWING DOWN THE RUCK is the bigger blight on our sport. Tim Gore nailed it in his piece, cynical and diabolical indeed... penalties conceded by Storm should have been 20+ by my count. Bin the next purple wrestler after 2 consecutive hold downs, these team is getting so smug at it. NRL act now!!

Norad, there are allot of people doing the same as you. The NRL is a very frustrating and nerve racking sport to watch!!! Especially with SOO and the refereeing inconsistencies that have plagued the game for years. As a plus, the Sydney sides are doing very well in the AFL so you're not the only one following or switching channels to the AFL

Agree with you 100% John Harvey!!! Soliola was going for a 'ball and all tackle' and Slater slipped and got the wrong end of the intended tackle. What do people expect??? The Storm were attacking, 20m out, Slater had the ball trying to step and he slipped. Soliola was committed to stopping Slater and it all went pear shape. It would have been more appropriate if Archer would have waited after the judiciaries ruling

john, you are seriously delusional if you really think you can attribute blame to slater. not intentional or reckless? are you serious or just having fun winding everyone up? hard to imagine that anyone seeing that could honestly believe it was not intentional. it was ridiculously late. he could have pulled out fifteen times. he set his sights on taking out slater by any means and he did just that. you tell us that he will be charged because it was on slater. then you tell us he will be charged because of the press. take off the tin hat, pal. i would add that the chairman of the judiciary is a supreme court judge. he probably doesn't need legal advice from you. it is worth adding that if this act of thuggery had been committed outside a pub on a friday evening, soliola could expect jail time. it is by the grace of god, or whichever divinity flicks the switch, that slater is not a cripple this morning. it would send the best possible message to the thugs and cowards in the game if this grub was wiped out for a year.

I've noticed that the Raiders are a very cranky team and the hit on Slater could be part of this anger. Players should be free to pass the ball and not contend with late swinging arm hits. The Raiders no doubt thought they could bully their way into the top four this year with a giant team and plenty of talent. This is perfectly legal but they are at times thuggish and out of control and Stickies frustration is bleeding into his team. Bottom line is that Stuart has not performed as a coach and he needs to cop it on the chin as painful as the truth may be.

John, the hit was shockingly late - well after he had passed the ball. If you hit someone that late - and with a swinging arm at that - you should wear the full consequences of the where the hit occurs. With such a late hit and stiff arm there is every chance you will cause severe injuries, whether high or not.

John you cant be sin binned for attempting an intercept..learn the rules BEFORE you throw the rubbish in like that.

We used to have 5 minute sin bins but they were a joke. Players would slow the game down, hurt in the tackle (yes, time off is blown but by the time the ref blew it...). They got rid of it because it didn't work.

You can be sinned binned in rugger for intercept attempts even - how daft is that

He was blowing up at the referees for the reason most of us do. Lack of consistancy, picking and choosing what rules to use and those not to use, lack of use for the sin bin and send off.

soliala should not play again this year and for a good chunk of next year. more importantly, the ref and the video ref should not be involved in a game again this year. disgraceful. they have all set the game back years. the refs have said to all teams that if it is an important game, say the grand final, then it is okay to take out an opposition player with a foul act. there might be repercussions post game but is the player or team going to care if it gets them a final win? and if the nrl allow them near a game again this year then they are condoning that. to hear commentators telling us, immediately it happened, that you would not meet a nicer bloke, that it is out of character and that there was no intent. do they really think fans are that be a bunch of fools? soliala's character was on display for all to see and it was not good. no intent? christ help me - he hit the bloke late, in the head, when slater was not looking, with a stiff swinging arm. no intent.

How does everyone feel at the attacking player making contact with the defenders head?
