Ross Lyon denies he wants 'Pies job

By News / Wire

Fremantle coach Ross Lyon has angrily denied he approached Collingwood about becoming their next senior AFL coach.

Brownlow medallist Brad Hardie claimed Lyon approached the Magpies to enquire about the possibility of taking over from under-pressure coach Nathan Buckley.

Hardie claims Collingwood rejected Lyon’s approach.

The Dockers released a statement on Sunday dismissing the “spurious claims”.

Collingwood are set to miss the finals for a fourth year in a row, and Buckley’s future remains unclear.

Lyon is contracted with Fremantle until the end of 2020, and says he has no thoughts of leaving.

The veteran coach was disgusted by Hardie’s claims on Perth radio.

“I am bitterly disappointed that such so called journalism even sees the light of day,” Lyon said.

“I have contacted Brad Hardie directly and voiced my disgust at his comments.

“They are totally without foundation and not based on fact in any way, shape or form.

“Such an erroneous and reckless claim should be exposed for what it is – a complete fabrication and a falsehood.

“It is also important for our members and supporters to know that I couldn’t be more be committed to what we are trying to achieve as a club at the Fremantle Dockers.

“I can assure our members and supporters that I am totally focused on returning the club to sustained finals success.”

Fremantle chief executive Steve Rosich said the club has a policy of not responding to rumour and innuendo.

“However in this case, because the report is utterly false and personal in nature, we felt compelled as a club to issue today’s statement,” Rosich said.

Hardie’s claims gained traction because of the way Lyon left St Kilda to join Fremantle at the end of 2011.

The Dockers sensationally axed then-Dockers coach Mark Harvey in order to lure Lyon their way.

The Saints were left stunned by Lyon’s defection, and the senior coach copped widespread criticism over the move.

But he has since established himself as Fremantle’s most successful coach, guiding the club to a grand final in 2013.

Fremantle are currently in the second year of a rebuild after their premiership window shut abruptly early last season.

They sit in 14th spot with an 8-12 record.

The Dockers put in one of their worst performances of the year on Saturday in a 104-point loss to Sydney at the SCG.

But they have been largely competitive in most games this season, even pushing heavyweights Geelong and GWS all the way in recent months.

Asd.....on the latest membership figures released Collingwood are number one ahead of Hawthorn, just. That is probably enough justification now for a mandate for Bucks to continue as the true supporters are sticking with Eddie, Bucks and the direction of the club.

What a confused argument you are trying to run. You are saying nothing at all. It's almost, "Blah, blah, blah, Ross Lyon." I suspect Paul D is close to the mark with the dog. the car and the lead.

Lyon didn't break his contract though. He did exercise a clause that was included to allow him to leave. From memory he had lost a huge amount of money (somewhere, investment gone bad?) and St Kilda had been delaying offering him a new contract to terms. He decided to take the financial security along with a move and fresh start that Fremantle offered.

And I argue that success breeds success. It's not possible to understand why the dogs premiership was so incredible without knowing the last 60 years. The fact Hawthorn has won a flag every decade since the 1960's is part of what continues to drive the excellent culture at that club. I take into consideration Ross has coached at two historically unsuccessful clubs. I think that's a necessary step to forming an even and fair assessment of his coaching. You always overlook the human factor in your arguments. It's all numbers and logic and assumed certainties. The real world is far more vague and uncertain than what you believe it to be.

I'm using the period from one year before he took over at each club to show that a couple of mediocre coaches got less experienced versions of Rossy's teams to deep in the finals.

Pauli you're using history from 20, 40, 60 years ago to make your argument. It is of little relevance what happened 20 years and no relevance 49 years ago. I'm using recent history from one year before Rossy took over at both Saints and Freo.

Anon logic: What teams have done historically is irrelevant Immediately cites historical arguments for both coaches preceding Ross to detract from his achievements. I see a coach who had the misfortune to run up against two incredible sides in Geelong and Hawthorn – epoch defining teams – and one Collingwood side wired up to within an inch of its life, and he still nearly knocked them off. Saints were happy for him to go all out for a flag. They’d won in 110 years or whatever it was. A few more years of mediocrity would be nothing if they’d snagged one. He wasn’t there to develop a list either so he hasn’t failed. He was there to get them to a premiership. He came very close to it. Your criticism of the manner in which he left St Kilda is odd given your usual hard nosed economic stance on most matters. How is Freo in a worse state than when he took over btw? I think their list is younger and shows a lot more promise than the aging list he inherited. He hasn’t left Freo yet either so he hasn’t failed there either, despite your best wishes.

What teams have done historically is irrelevant in an age of drafts, salary caps, etc. Grant Thomas took a younger version of Rossy's team to two consecutive prelims. St Kilda were crippled by injury in 2006, went out in the first week and Thomas got the sack. The Saints board felt a Grand Final was par with that incredible list. Mark Harvey whose coaching was described as odd by Pavlich got a young version of Rossy's side to the second week of the finals in 2010. Was sacked the following season for missing the finals despite being crippled by injuries. As you see, Rossy took over two finals teams that were young, on the way up, that two ordinary coaches had already taken deep into the finals. In that context, Rossy's record looks far less impressive, and his record in finals (where is game plan is really put up to scrutiny) is abysmal given he had two lists at their peaks at his disposal. The big question mark was whether he could evolve his game plan successfully. On that front he's failed. Could he develop lists? On that front he's failed twice and left two clubs in a far worse state than when he took over.

I look at a coach who took two teams with a history of underperforming (seriously the Saints are the worst team in the comp statistically, and Freo aren’t far behind them) to grand finals. He had a gameplan that is showing its age and is working to adapt. What worked for him prior to 2016 and the changes to the marking rules isn’t working anymore and he’s struggling a bit. But he may yet come good and work things out. Freo don't really have a forward line at present and are still turning over the list. It's understandable they're in a state of flux. The difference is that some of us are prepared to be even handed and acknowledge that a man doesn’t hold down a head coaching career for ten years without possessing a fair whack of talent, drive and ability. You on the other hand are utterly black and white, broad strokes, laden with assumptions and opinions not supported by evidence, punched out on your keyboard while holding your beloved dog’s collar that perished under Ross’s tyres that fateful day he was driving to Seaford and set you on this decade long vendetta of hatred.

I think there's substance to this. Rossy is facing another three sub .500 seasons. In fact, I think it will get ugly. His win loss record and reputation will take a battering. He won't last three seasons and will be finished as a coach. By going to Collingwood he would be getting a new 5 year contract, at least as much money as he's getting at Freo, and can wipe his hands of the disaster that is Freo. By seeing out his Freo contract we'll learn that he can't build a list, can't develop a list, can't evolve his game plan. Staying the course at Freo will expose him for what he is. Going to Collingwood allows him to squeeze another few years and few million dollars out of his coaching career.

I don't know why you reference me. You obviously never read what I write. I love our kids and celebrate them every week. I also love some of our older players, Sandi, Johnno and Ballas the 3 in particular. All Ballas lacks is match fitness from an injury riddled lay off. He'll have his usual 25 to 40 goal season next year.

Love that one Johno so true if he was still at Freo Ross would still be playing him ..... Poor old Bucks did not want him obviously . Surely Bennell and Nahuis come in this week to replace old Hasbeens Ballantyne and Pearce surely even Don Freo would agree on that one ........ probably not....he probably drop a couple kids .
