Terrific Tigers trump Manly

By Alan / Roar Guru

The Wests Tigers are back in the winner’s circle, beating the Manly Sea Eagles 30-26 in a highly entertaining contest this afternoon.

Having led by 20-6 at halftime, it appeared that the Sea Eagles would race away with the contest in the second half.

The Tigers however never gave up and took advantage of some poor Manly play in defence and attack to make up the deficit and secure another great win over the Sea Eagles.

Manly remain on 28 points and their recent poor form continues. That’s three defeats in their past four matches.

Today’s result will annoy Trent Barrett given that Manly looked in complete control 20-8 up in the first half.

This is a great result for the Tigers who have actually competed well in recent weeks despite losing on several occasions.

The Tigers will be keen to build some winning momentum now heading into season 2018. Halves Tuimoala Lolohea and Luke Brooks performed well for the Tigers and should gain plenty of confidence from this showing.

Top less weekend for a Manly supporter in both Rugby League (Sunday) and Rugby Union Shute Shield (Saturday) both games were turned by four intercept tries two in each code. That's rarely seen,But both the Tiges and the Woodies deservered their wins. Sava

So a blatant mistake is OK to cause a TV finish. Roy Masters words yesterday couldnt be more appropriate "The practice of referees assuming the role of choreographers, or puppetmasters, is the worst it has ever been in the NRL. The 50-50 calls tend to go in favour of the team down the ladder, as opposed to the process we saw 20-30 years ago where referees would check the penalty count at half-time and adjust accordingly in the second half. Watch any game today between a top-of-the-ladder team and one down the bottom and it's the team in need of premiership points that tends to get the favourable calls. And the penalties come in bursts of the whistle. This is not to say referees are cheats. Having witnessed some of the biased and blatant decision-making of the centre men of the 1970s and '80s, today's whistleblowers are inherently fair. They are decent, fit, highly knowledgeable people, dedicated to the game. Perhaps too dedicated. Their weakness is a subconscious need to be party to an even contest, to avert blow-outs. They seem to believe they have an obligation to the NRL to present a thrilling TV product, or a close result for spectators." And he wrote this before the Tigers game and there have been worse examples during the last 10 seasons under now retired refs.

The last pass was only as forward as the pass Api gave for DCE to score. The universe is balanced. The Tigers were anything but terrific.

Good on Trent Barrett. Journos tried to goad him into refs faulting the loss but he just said "nope, we weren't good enough. At 20-6 we should have been able to manage the second half better." Credit to him, there should be more of it.

Yesterday was a classic reason why 'local grounds' should be developed and the main games on Saturday and Sunday should be day games that should start at 3pm max. The NRL are kidding themselves otherwise. Great crowd with a great atmosphere that reflects the greatest game of them all.

Illogically it seems that Manly had thought they had achieved enough to win this game leading 20 to 6 at half time-Logic would say that this was a false assumption on their part being outscored 24 to 6 in the second half to lose the game 30-26.

The last penalty to Tigers was a joke as was the last pass for the final try - what pantomime to fabricate a finish - Masters was right in the Sun Herald today to restate that refs are choreographers to bring about close games.
