Tigers sign Marshall for 2018 NRL season

By News / Wire

Benji Marshall will return to Wests Tigers on a one-year deal next NRL season.

“I look forward to working with Benji over the coming year, he has a lot to offer this club and I know he’s keen to return and make a positive impact on Wests Tigers,” said coach Ivan Cleary in a statement on Sunday.

The 32-year-old Brisbane playmaker, who won a premiership at the Tigers in 2005, confirmed the shift back to the club he left in 2013 with Fairfax Media.

“I never wanted to leave the place, and I’ve tried several times to get back and now I’ve got my chance,” Marshall said.

Just reading some of the comments, all I can say is pull your heads in. It's not just about what he can give on the playing field, it's also about what he can do in the background. And most importantly it’s what this means to us as a club. Our culture has been decimated by some low life useless oxygen stealing administrators at our club. When Brian Smith (the rotten toilet water drinking mercenary that he is) was hired by the imbeciles at the time to run a fine tooth comb through our club and provide a report that was ultimately erroneous and inflammatory to say the least, our culture took a massive downward slide. As a Wests Tigers supporter, our leadership has in no way been reflective of the two great clubs that joined forces to become the Mighty Wests Tigers. Our good name has been dragged through the gutter and it's time this came to an end. Having Benji come home is a signal that we may now be turning back to the values that would be the building blocks of a culture that may finally eradicate the term "joint venture" and may finally unite the club in a way that has been sadly lacking. Even though we haven't been the Wests Tigers for long, Benji is a part of our heritage that reminds us of better days, a time when the Wests Tigers were all about razzle dazzle and had a winning culture. Welcome Home Benji. Wishing you nothing but the best lad. And as always, Go the Might Wests Tigers. 2018 is our year.

As a bench/reserve player he could be a handy utility, a bit slow now but can still hold up any backline pos, & i wonder if hooker could be a spot for him. He likes dummy half & he's still quick off the mark & elusive. He could try n clone Cameron smith. He can kick too which is a good asset for a dummy half.

Benji regained his "Mojo" at the Broncos. Bennett gave him a life line small contract for the year & he repaid the Broncos with some really good form. Best of luck back with the west Tigers in 2018.

Welcome back, Benji. You are still the best with plenty more to give to the club and team.

Apparently Kodi Nikorima has very much appreciated a season with Benji. By all accounts he has been a real mentor for the youngster. That sounds like something the West Tigers could very much do with.

A sensible and good move by Ivan, Benji will bring allot of experience to the Tigers that they have lacked for years. Ivan is an astute coach and he will take advantage of Benji's experience to chime in with Brooks and J. Reynolds. Good move and it can't hurt.

That's a great idea as long as the NRL brings in an extra halves position for the 2018 season so Benji can play alongside Brooks and Reynolds.

I think Benji still has something to offfer. Even if he only gives cover for injuries. He was pretty good when he played for the Broncs this year. The Tigers never should have let him go. He was one of the very few must watch players in his time and I hope he has a good final season at Tigerland.

His year at the Brisbane was a bit of a waste, but he can go back to his roots

Very interesting, wasn't expecting that at all. Could serve as a mentor to Lolohea/Reynolds/Brooks but other than that I don't see what he offers.

Not sure why the Tigers would make this move unless it is to set up some sort of coaching gig for the future. What value does he add? I know he has played OK this year but...
