The Rabbitohs' performance on the weekend was embarrassing

By Pomeroy007 / Roar Rookie

As a proud Rabbitohs member and fan for over 45 years, I was totally embarrassed by the team’s performance on the weekend against Melbourne.

At no stage did I think the Bunnies would beat the Storm in Melbourne, but surely after three wins on the trot, Souths would put in a decent performance against the 2017 premiership favourites?

Where was the anger, passion or pride from coach Michael Maguire and captain Sam Burgess at the press conference after the game? Neither of them showed any remorse for the embarrassment caused for the club’s sponsors, members and fans.

Players in the team gave up the ghost – they didn’t try at all and were already thinking of Mad Monday.

I am totally dumbfounded that no one from the club has officially apologised for the team’s inept performance. It seems to have been swept under the carpet.

Where is a voice from the CEO, general manager of football or the coach? Is this the standard way the club deals with a 60-point shellacking?

It reminded me of the bad old days, when the club re-entered the competition and were the whipping boys.

We won a premiership just under three years ago. I have never known a club to fall from grace as badly as the Rabbitohs.

Storm fan here but stop stealing " the all blacks " moniker even tho the storm owners also represent the all blacks

Wow, I'm sorry I was out by 4 points! It should be noted the current playing roster are paid a hell of a lot more than Tugger's thrown together side. Plainly put being beaten by 60 odd points is nothing short of disgraceful and the buck stops with The Pie Eater and Madge.

Star Struck you probably should get your facts straight. Souths actually lost to Knights in 1999 by 60-0 with Tugger as coach. so at least this current team scored a try against Storm. Newcastle came 7th on ladder that year and had an overall +91 for and against. Hardly comparable to the storm opposition

'the best team in the history of sport'??? That's a bit of an overstatement. What should have been said is, that is the worst performance of any Souths side ever 'in the history of the game' (seeing that Souths have been there from the start) and that should have been your statement 'The Fatman'!!!

BigJ your 100% correct regardless of the opposition some form of resistance and effort needed to be shown.. I think only the Knights let 60 points in this season but they have improved since being the whipping boys, we seem to be going backwards..

Not even under Tugger did they loose by that much, and remember Tugger got sacked. The performance on the weekend was nothing short of disgraceful, it is time for Madge to go!!!

True fatman but not by sixty bloody points. The Rabbitohs put in one of the worst performances of the year on the weekend. Even through the Storm are pretty much unstoppable at the moment the Rabbitohs should of put in some sort of resistance to that.

The Raibbitohs played the best team in the history of sport. No shame in losing to the great Storm.

I think the Rabbitohs just ran into the "perfect Storm" on the night ! The Storm were red hot , had 60 % of pill, and the bunnies lost their chief organiser and playmaker after 8 minutes ! They also have been playing guys out of position in the backline (Fuimaono & Sutton) and others carrying injuries ( big Sam). I think the score line blowout was unfair on the bunnies, they weren't that awful. But we know how difficult it is to pinch the momentum back from any team, let alone the Storm when they are firing. And the Storm with 60 % possession these days will always equal a massacre ! I actually think the Rabbitohs have plenty to be excited about going forward into next year. They have unearthed some real talent this year in Crichton, Murray , & Gosiewski. They have already bought well for next year by grabbing Gagai. And with GI hopefully back, Walker, Cook & Johnstone with another year under their belts, and Sam Burgess to again lead from the front, I expect them to go well next year. They can get rid of some deadwood like Sutton & Tyrell and bring in some more young talent, but they still need to sort out their halves. Reynolds spends too much time on the sidelines and offers little but a kicking game.

Yep, Cameron Murray has obviously been a very thorough student at the Sam Burgess school of tackling. Absolute keepers from the Rabbitohs 17 on Saturday are: Walker (as a 5/8), Reynolds, Cook, Crichton, Murray, Graham and Sam Burgess. Young Zane Musgrove and Jack Gosiewski looks the goods too.

Not too sure when the Juniors were tipping in $1M need some verification on that one. If I recall those years supporters were peeved about the total absence of support from the Juniors

007, the Club will also need to work overtime on maintaining the very strong Membership numbers. I have to say they do a great job looking after there Members.

I completely agree WB. Gone are the days when The Juniors would tip in $1 Mill.. Now its all about growing Membership and the massive corporate support which the club does well.. That said they will need to work hard in 2018 with two major partners that need to be replaced!

'zoot' you are completely correct and that has been Souths main problems. The perspective and projection that this club is giving is a complete and utter rabble and that the club is run by a bunch of ‘armatures’ and that the club has no structure, professionalism or pride!!! In this day and age when these players and staff are getting a‘s**t load of money’ (200-300-400 to 800K, which is not a bad wage in any profession these days) these guys seem like they are just in it for some easy money. The club should be run like a corporate or a business (which it isn’t) and when their results don’t come up to scratch, especially 'on the playing field', which it hasn’t been over the years, that is when they should be scrutinised and appropriate action should be taken and the rot should be cut out!!! As it is now, ‘near enough’ is not good enough and this 43 year GF is not what the fans want!!! Russell Crow should ‘sack’ and have a complete ‘clean out’ of the whole structure of the club. For example, the side that they picked last Sunday was a side that was a rabble, it should have never been picked, this is especially against the Storm. Aaron Gray (who’s leaving the club) has been a dud all year, they put him in the centres with Fuimaono, they had Sutton at 5/8 and the whole side was a rabble of out of position players. When you look at Souths, they have some very talented players but, in comparison to other sides, they don’t seem to have the will and mongrel like for instance the Cowboys, Tigers or even the Knights have. We as Souths fans want our side to have a go and prove ‘week in and week out’ that they are competitors and they what to have a go in the NRL competition!!! As they are now, they seem like a ‘hot and cold’ more cold, and have been a complete disgrace, in the last 3 years and they have proved that they are just there to make up the numbers. Enough said, I’m disgusted and will have to just follow the NRL as a nutral fan, as I’ve done for so many years in the past!!!

Zoot, Richo did an interview on the Clubs website a few weeks ago regarding this very topic. He acknowledged the Club didn't plan well for post GF success. You mentioned a similar fall from grace in 1990, today's Souths are a much different Club to back then. Souths are a big Club and well resourced, they shouldn't be bottom feeders. I expected them to make the 8 this season however they never looked likely.

The tackling of Cameron Murray was pretty good as well. Never heard of this guy before this game but heard Bellamy mention him before the game as one of the good up and comers that the Rabbitohs blooded this year. Some of the stop tackles he put on, especially the one on Nelson, not bad for a rookie. I think Mcguire has done pretty well getting the new talent in this year. They just came up against a red hot Storm who for the first time this season had their best team on the park.

There were 3 players I was impressed with in the Rabbitohs lineup on Saturday. - Damian Cook - Bryson Goodwin - Angus Crichton This is for one very simple reason. 78th Minute, down 58-6, Vunivalu breaks through a weak effort from John Sutton and in the clear. The Rabbitohs have 3 chasers: Cook, Goodwin and Crichton. Cook and Goodwin are running from ingoal area and Crichton is running from the far side of the field. They dont give up, they are chasing hard, Crichton forced Vunivalu to kick ahead when he gassed and Cook nearly makes enough effort to force an error at the death from Addo-Carr. It was an immensely impressive effort from those 3 considering the context. If I was a Rabbitohs supporter, I would have the effort of those 3 first on my team wish list.

Souths were Minor Premiers in 1989 and ended up with wooden spoon in 1990 being a Souths supporter for 45 years or so you should remember that. Not only that the club did not feature in the semi's again until 2007 I believe (two years out 2000-2001) Now that's a big fall from grace. I think there needs to be some perspective here.

Well written 007, an utter disgrace to leak in that many points. The Bunnies are a classic example of what not to do post winning a GF.
