Bangladesh record historic victory over Australia

By Scott Pryde / Expert

Bangladesh have recorded their first ever Test victory over Australia in dramatic circumstances at Mirpur, with the tourists failing by just 20 runs.

Australia came into the final day in a strong position, but couldn’t hold on with wickets perishing regularly. The tourists would lose eight wickets on Day 4 for just 135 runs.

David Warner and Steve Smith resumed what was always going to be the final day of the match with Australia at 2 for 109 requiring 265 to win. Bangladesh bowled ordinarily early on though, as David Warner went past his century.

It looked as if Warner and Smith had picked up where they left off on Day 3 when they had Bangladesh on the back foot, combining for a strong partnership to keep Australia in the game at Stumps.

Shortly after, Warner was dismissed for 109 with the Australian captain following shortly afterwards for a grinding, hard-fought 37.

Veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan picked up both of those wickets and went on to pick up his second five wicket haul for the match to go with a half century in Bangladesh’s first innings which made him man of the match and just the second player to achieve ten wickets and a half century in a Test match more than once.

Shakib continued to apply the pressure for the Tigers, joined by Taijul Islam (3/60) at the other end with Peter Handscomb and Glenn Maxwell not able to make a significant dent in the total. Handscomb was caught for 15 off the bowling of Taijul, while Matthew Wade came and went for four, using Australia’s second review in the process.

The Tigers kept the pressure on after lunch, Australia needing 70 runs from their final three wickets and in dire straights. The writing was on the wall when Glenn Maxwell was trapped in front to the bowling of Shakib.

Nathan Lyon (12) and Patrick Cummins (33 not out) put up a resistance to put the hosts under some pressure late in the contest, but Josh Hazlewood was trapped LBW for a ten-ball duck to the bowling of Taijul to complete the famous victory for Bangladesh.

Earlier in the match, Bangladesh had won the toss and elected to bat, scoring 260 in their first innings thanks to a wonderful partnership between Shakib and Tamim Iqbal, who rescued Bangladesh from a perilous position of 3 for 10.

Australian then crumbled to concede a first innings loss, before knocking the Tigers over for 221 and setting themselves 265 for victory.

The second Test will begin on Monday in Chittagong.

Final score

Bangladesh 10/260 & 10/221 defeat
Australia 10/217 & 10/244

Hilton Cartwright for Hazelwood deserves consideration. Hazey is a great bowler, but conditions don't suit him, and it was our batting that was the issue, not our ability to take wickets. So long as he can keep it tight. Just clog up an end without leaking runs.

I know this is Bangladesh's first ever victory against the Aussies but this is only the 5th Test match the 2 nations have played against each other. This is really a disgrace considering they were granted Test status in 2000! What happened to the Future Tours Program? And as one of the "big" cricket nations, shouldn't we be trying to grow and strengthen the game? Or is CA just interested in raking in the dollars from Ashes and India tours and the BBL?

wow. oh wow. How can you compare the pay rates of the two countries? But firstly the Australian players were fighting for better conditions for all parties - state players, women etc and they did so. Is that something to feel bad about? Secondly Bangladesh are no longer minnows. They have been fantastic in the last year on home soil. Good luck to them. Can you tell me what they have won in terms of World Cups or maybe their equivalent of the Ashes? So they have one tests at home and money should be thrown at them? Also Nomad quoted how much a month they earn. That's wonderful. What is the cost of living in their country? I am not sure what the posters here do for a crust. But based on this if anybody goes into bat for them for higher wages they will step up and say "No we don't deserve that". Yeah....sure

great comments and I agree . Shame people keep missing Lyon's efforts though. he gets roundly bagged when he has minimal impact and he took 9 in this test and a run-out. Wish he got mentioned more

Very good point. While people are talking about winning 2-0 here, I am bit concerned about our chances in SA in Oct. Some of the batsman need to work on their technique against the short balls.

A super, super test match. Also on top of the the remarkable match in England. Test cricket is a wonderful game. I would think this would be up there for closest games in recent memory. We just needed a second partnership but it wasn't to be. Hard to win with a batting order carrying Khawaja as a work experience pick and Wade as a ... I'm not sure what really. Shakib, waddaplaya!! If he played for a major country he would be a superstar. Well done David Warner for producing under immense personal and team pressure. And Pat Cummins continues to enhance his reputation. Let's give Cartwright a run in place of Hazlewood. The pace bowler is surplus here anyway and a bit of batting depth to allow Khawaja to continue to clog up the top order wouldn't go astray. So frustrated we couldn't get there, but rather than dwell too long on our failings, let's give Bangladesh a big hand. 18 months ago they had beaten no one apart from Zimbabwe and a West Indies A team (the main team was on strike). Now they have knocked off Sri Lanka, England and Australia. Great for cricket.

Since 2000 Indian batsmen have given a far better account of themselves here in Australia and scored more runs than our batsmen have in India. In fact, India have the exact opposite problem as to why they haven't been able to win a series here. Their spinners are rendered toothless and their pacers spray the ball all over simply not accustomed to bowling on such tracks. Indian batsmen always score runs here. Their bowlers struggle. Our current batsmen with the exception of Smith cannot buy a run in spinning conditions. Our bowlers have always adapted beautifully.

Well done Bangles. Aussies would be lucky to have players as good as Tamin, Shakib and their keeper in the Australian side

Quite happy to see these sort of conditions. The opposite will be at home with flat track treasures where useless tail enders get 50's and countless red faced pace bowlers bang in all day long at 13 overs an hour. We could have won this test dispite the pitch/ conditions with a bit more application on the first day. So well done to Bangladesh. Cricket is more than we dish up every summer.

This should not be seen as an upset though. Bangladesh knocked over England recently which would have given them plenty of confidence coming into the Australian tests. They have been on the rise for awhile and with the world class Shakid to inspire them they are every chance to win this series. Australias batting away from home has been brittle for years, and Handscomb, Maxwell blew big chances to show they can succeed at test level regularly. Next test O'Keefe will be back so we will have the two grubs to bad mouth the opposition. Hohns seems to think that is the way to win tests. Though Wades keeping has improved he has proved to be hopeless with the bat. What a hopeless selection he has been for the failed selection crew. If they sacked the entire decrepit CA management team, that would inspire the players enough to win the series. Even better some competent people might get employed.

And if they dared to protest or heavens even go on strike I will wager they will have played their last game for Bangladesh.

ok i found the 2017 salary list - Bangladesh test players pay ranges from $US 762 per month ... up to $US 2540 per month for the top paid players... This does not include any extra earnings from 20/20 leagues... or promotional work. Hmmm time for a pay rise for the victors!
