Back off homesick players

By Michael Thompson / Roar Guru

AFL clubs across the board should back off players who are homesick and want to be traded back.

The media, the coaches and the list managers overreact to every single piece of trade period news, but we should wait until after grand final day to start speculating. Plenty of players get homesick – they don’t like being far away from their family and friends when they relocate to another state.

Over the last few years we have seen plenty of players head home to be closer to family and friends.

Cam McCarthy is a shining example. He was a key forward for GWS, and it was in the plans for him to become part of their formula for their maiden premiership. However, in late 2015 McCarthy, months after re-signing with the Giants, was feeling homesick and wanted to go back to Western Australia.

Fremantle had their eyes set on one man, and that was McCarthy, but the Giants refused to trade him. McCarthy sat out 2016 and went back to Western Australia, which forced GWS to cave and trade their homesick forward back to WA. McCarthy became a Docker.

In 2016 there was a battle between Adelaide and Carlton – not on a footy field, but in a boardroom – over where Bryce Gibbs was going to play his footy in 2017. Adelaide list manager Justin Reid, failing to inform Carlton, came out on trade radio and said Bryce Gibbs had requested a trade home and that he was confident of getting Gibbs back to South Australia.

Adelaide and Carlton went back and forth for ten days, with Adelaide being weak at the trade table and failing to give up players Charlie Cameron or Mitch McGovern for Bryce Gibbs, who had three years left on his deal and was playing his best footy.

Ultimately Adelaide gave up. Reid and the Adelaide recruiting team failed to get Gibbs, and that was fair enough for the fact they failed to keep up their end of the bargain.

The trade rumours for the star Carlton midfield continue 12 months later. If Adelaide want to lure Bryce Gibbs home, they need give up big, including a star player and a first-round pick.

Adelaide coach Don Pyke, being hypocritical about Brisbane showing interest in Crows half-forward winger Charlie Cameron.

Hold on, Don Pyke – didn’t you want Bryce Gibbs and target him last year without letting Carlton know? It seems contradictory for players with lengthy contracts wanting to leave their club. It’s modern football, Don. Lve with it.

What I’m saying is that unless the player admits they’re homesick, like Cam McCarthy and Sam Docherty, they should be left alone.

Adelaide are guilty, and so are a few other clubs, this trade period. It’s annoying and it’s frustrating for football clubs and their fans.

Oh please, Brisbane will have no shortage of people looking to trade with us. We're no threat to anyone and tend to only be interested in a few specific players. And we pay pretty well for them. Our coach has so far shown he can handle the media and the playing group with ease. Adelaide though - well, Don Pyke will be wishing he had also had a meth addled son to put him out of his misery by the time this finals campaign is over.

Homesickness is a long-term factor for even the best clubs e.g. Brad Hill to Freo and Dangerwood to Geelong but it's much more an issue for interstate teams at the lower end of the cycle. Hard to avoid

I don't see a lot of ex-Brisbane players on Adelaide's list (so I fail to see how Adelaide has been not playing nice around Brisbane for years) BUT my point is about the overall approach and the naivety of Fagan as a coach, Fagan as a Media Spokesperson and Fagan as a club representative. Nobody will play nice with Brisbane BECAUSE of statements like this Paul. You reap what you sow.

I was under the impression that Pyke responded to a comment and question from a journo. I got the impression that at that point he hadn't actually heard the context of Fagan's comments. Storm in a teacup on a slow news day. Nice to see Don fire up a bit anyway. He has generally been very measured.

Home sickness, or just wanting to be with family who are sick (Jesse Hogan, Jarrod Garlett are prime examples) is not a black and white issue. McCarthy was eventually hospitalised with his mental health issues. Your solution for these players is for clubs to back off? When Dylan Roberton expressed a desire to return to Victoria for family reasons Fremantle worked with him. Harley Balic is doing the same this season. he's already had extended leave from the club to help deal with it. The solution is to work with the players to ensure that they can be with family or be in the best place where their mental health can be looked after. It's a small percentage of players that succumb to this. As a club Fremantle have lost a few players back to the east - Jeff White, Trent Croad, Dylan Roberton, Jess Sinclair, Leigh Brown, Heath Black, Adam McPhee, Robert Warnock - not sure if all were homesick but a good portion were And in return we've picked up some players who have wanted to come home - Headland, Bennell, Hill, Hamling, Kersten, McCarthy, Carr Swings and roundabouts

Perhaps "your coach" should have played that question back to the bowler by responding along the lines of: "We don't discuss opposition players or our list mid-season". At the time a quality journalist could have asked Brisbane, and in particular Fagan, which player he would be cutting from the existing list to make way for Cameron, but that would have also been disrespectful?

I would add also that our coach was asked a question about Cameron and answered it honestly. Of course he'd like to have him at the side. "“We are certainly interested in getting players to our club who can help us progress up the ladder." “(Cameron’s) age profile and talent is something we are interested in. “I’ll leave that to David Noble, but if Charlie Cameron is available and interested (in joining Brisbane), I’d love to have him.” Pyke threw a tantrum over a straight answer and was rightly rebuked by our coach for popping his cork.

I thought Pyke's response would've been pretty standard from any club. And from memory to some degree both he and Fagan were baited by the media. Not much in it really. Everyone seemed to move quite quickly.

Good points Jolza. This is an exceptionally poor and poorly researched article. There is considerable bias with statements made and no factual information provided, or the convenient omission of information. I am surprised this was even published. I would think based on the rubbish presented it would be fair to say that Michael Thompson is weak at the keyboard.

Fair play re: Cameron but jeez, given the amount of clubs tapping up our players all through the regular season the last few years I'm inclined to think we're owed a bit of dodgy dealings. Adelaide will get over it.

I'm pretty sure he explained the point. You only get your players targeted by other clubs to come home, if they are good enough players for clubs to want. The Victorian media only talk about it for months if.....wait for it......the player is good enough and people care. And Tippett is the worst example you could have had. He literally chased more money in Sydney instead of home to Queensland, another point made by Pedro. From 2013, the only player of note who the club wanted to keep but went home was Dangerfield. A high quality player who naturally got a lot of media coverage, but it had nothing to do with a culture problem at the club. Nor does one player over four seasons (this year isn't over yet) make a trend. But that's ok, keep claiming there is one a year.

Well done Pedro, you’ve simultaneously confirmed every stereotype of the “over-sensitive mouth breathing crows fan” that’s ever been mentioned and completely missed the point.

Oh here we go again with this ridiculous crap from a Blues fan. The Crows did not chase Bryce. He came to them to request to go home. And if you think Carlton had no idea before Adelaide announced it, then you are incredible naïve. Fair enough if the Blues were a bit annoyed by Adelaide announcing it first, but the parties knew. Plus what club would EVER pay a first round pick and a star player for an above average player who once again couldn't even make the 40 man AA squad. Adelaide were right to walk away from the crazy demands SOS was throwing out, even if they could have probably handled some things differently with when it was first announced publically. As for the Charlie Cameron situation. Adelaide have NEVER mentioned chasing any players while that team is still in contention for the flag. That is the difference between this and the Gibbs situation. One was announced during trade week, when um....trades get announced. And another was leading into the finals for a club finishing on top. And I am confused. Exactly what is Adelaide guilty of this trade period? I wasn't aware we had publically said we were chasing anyone. Would be kind of stupid with the season still going. I understand why a Carlton fan may have forgotten this part.

That is a perfect example of how a club's "culture" and player welfare department provides environments that players either want to stay or return "home".

Can you notice the Premiership table Franko? Hard to believe Adelaide are top with all of those players going home. Adelaide's refusal to pay players exorbitant amounts (they spread the cash around all players) has more to do with cash hungry players leaving the club than the go home factor. Can you see Eddie Betts and Sam Jacobs in the Adelaide side. Pretty sure they came home from Carlton. Probably homesick. Can you see all of those players from other State's in the Adelaide side? Apparently they are all homesick? Do you remember Andrew McLeod or Darren Jarman? Pretty sure they came back to Adelaide to play from interstate clubs? Do you remember the 13 players that Port put on the trade table last year that NOBODY wanted? That is why Port keeps their players ... Nobody wants their spuds! Anyone want a Hamish or maybe a Lobbe? Perhaps I could interest you in a Trengove or a Pittard, or an Ah Chee or an Amon or ... PS: Tippets family live on the Gold Coast not Sydney. It was when he chased the Sydney $ instead of sticking to his request to be traded home that the trouble started. I know who won that deal in the end and they ain't red and white.

If your leaving your home state and think your a chance to be homesick, then don't accept the trade, don't sign the contract extension... there are options. If players want as the control of where they play, you need to scrap trades.
