After the amazing scenes at Pepper Stadium on Saturday, where a slick Matildas side overcame a valiant Brazil with two strikes from the most likely sources, the teams back up again for the second match in the series.
The Australians were the better side on the weekend and played at a speed which tested the Brazilians, who used aggressive challenges as their paramount defence in an attempt to halt the fast counter-punch of the home side.
When the Aussies broke quickly, the Brazilians had no answer and one would expect a few changes in the line-up for the visitors. Despite looking outclassed at times, the quality in the Brazilian team was still evident and a well-taken goal ensured the contest remained more than interesting all the way to the final whistle.
With the Australians searching for points to continue their climb in the world rankings these top ten teams will again produce football of the highest calibre. Much talk will again centre around the soaring star of Sam Kerr and the stunning strike from Lisa De Vanna in Sydney.
Brazil will look to get more from Marta and hope Cristiane is able to play the provider’s role again. If given opportunities, the visitors showed they have the weapons to convert pressure into goals.
McDonald Jones Stadium will be well populated tonight and the Hunter should feel blessed to have such a wonderful contest on their doorstep. These matches equate to an enormous step forward for women’s football in this country and let’s hope the snowball keeps rolling all the way to the next World Cup.
Prediction
This game should open up a little more than Saturday’s encounter, which was hampered by weak officiating that affected the spectacle. Hopefully the referee is more diligent and punishes the cynical challenging that restricted the Australian’s attack.
Based on the evidence from the weekend, the Matildas will dominate again.

The Matildas have completed a two-nil series victory against the Brazilians after their triumph at McDonald Jones Stadium Newcastle. The Brazilians were far better tonight than their performance in Sydney on Saturday and took the lead with an early goal through Fabiana. Australia gradually wrestled some influence as the first half evolved and the equaliser eventually came. Sam Kerr produced another highlight to add to her growing reel, with a powerful header that stunned the opposition and the crowd. The teams went into the break level, yet the Australians seemed to have the momentum. Before some patrons even had a chance to take their seats, Caitlin Foord took a scrappy chance and put the Australians into the lead. With some great lead up work and a clumsy miscue from Katrina Gorry, the ball fell for Foord who slotted home after a disappointing gam in the first clash between these two nations on Saturday. The Matildas took control from that point and the crowd sat in anticipation, waiting for some Sam Kerr fireworks. Boy, were they satisfied. Some incredible work fro Chloe Logarzo saw the ball played into the box and the Australian superstar slotted home the third goal for the home side. The gymnastics display that followed will be front page news tomorrow, and if not, shame on media outlets, it was outstanding, The Brazilians had some late chances and a dubious penalty call against Ellie Carpenter, who appeared to defend her opponentin the same way thousands of defenders have done before her, was converted by Marta. The final minutes were marred by animosity and tension as some cynical challenges took place. It was a real shame to see some of the Brazilian players refusing to shake hands at the end of the game. Frankly, they were outplayed by the Australians over the two matches. In fact, it is now three victories in a row for the Matildas and the Brazilians might search within their own ranks and their cynical approach to defence to realise some of the failings they have in attack compared to the Matildas. Yes disappointing from the Brazilians at the end but no disappointment from the Matildas! Loved this game, really intense, they made an effort with every possession and challenged the Brazilians ball so well. Lots of drama throughout which makes for a spectacle hehe. Bright future for women's football ahead!
