Wallabies confirm 32-man squad for Springboks, Argentina Tests

By Josh / Expert

The ARU has released their 32-man squad for the Wallabies’ upcoming matches in South Africa and Argentina.

The squad is essentially unchanged from the 33-man group that the side playing in Canberra last week was selected from, except that Adam Korczyk has been dropped to make it 32.

Lukhan Tui, Billy Meakes and Izaia Perese are the three uncapped players in the squad who could potentially make their debuts during the tour.

Dane Haylett-Petty, Sefa Naivalu, James Slipper and Jermain Ainsley are all currently unavailable due to injury and as such are not named in the squad.

The Wallabies play South Africa at 1:05am AEST on October 1 at Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein next week, then play Argentina at 9:40am AEST on October 8 at Estadio Malvinas Argentinas in Mendoza.

The Wallabies have one win, one draw and two losses from four Rugby Championship games so far this year, so will need two wins to finish the competition with a positive ledger.

Simmons couldn't get a phone call until there was ink on his Tahs contract, now he is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Coincidence? Billy Meakes might see some Game time now that the Tahs are sniffing around his skirt.

I like the kid but I don't think he is ready, especially Playing CheikaBall. CheikaTah needs his Wingers to be primary defenders to compensate for Folau and his lightweight 10 and 12. If Australia ever go back to a traditional game plan the uses a pure Winger, he could be a good option.

They are going to love going up against the Drua, they are an international team. Perhaps they will roll over and play dead for them. Either that or you are clueless. If you don't go into a game with a plan to win, you may as well not show up. Is this why the Tahs did so badly, they don't care about winning against a non-australian side. Pull your head out of your armpit.

TWAS, Fair cop, he did make a lot of meters. But he is in the side as a finisher, Much like Folau. If he isn't scoring tries, he isn't fulfilling his role. His defense isn't much chop so his ROI was quite low for the game. Koribete carved up the outside backs against the spirit the week before, making it across the line or handing off to someone that did. He gets a tick in his box. Naiyavoro either knocked on or got isolated and penalized. Running 60m is pointless if the end result is an opposition lineout throw from where you first received the ball.

I saw it quoted recently that Hoops is a great rugby player, just not a very good #7. Hanigan is a necessary evil to compensate for the 2 alleged 7's. He takes on the role of injury reserve lock. The same sort of thing happens in the back line. 1 compromise after another, 6 positions in total disrupted by 2 players. Bias or ignorance, you decide.

100% spot on. That's why it's such hard work supporting this team.

These two tests coming up sees the need for improvement and with the number of players picked it makes this a hard exercise. We have had a couple of poor years highlighted by poor selection issues. Ruck and maul and defensive issue also need to come good. This tour part of the spring offensive could see the coach in trouble. He needs the team to win both away tests in the RC, the third AB game or at least close and the northern spring tour, though they should beat Japan. They will need to at least win 2 of the three games in the UK otherwise the axe needs to fall and not necessarily just the players.

Far too many Rebels players there. Talk about a reward for not performing.

LoL Terry, surely you jest. I'm a Tahs supporter though and through and N.Hanigan was average for the whole season. His whole claim to fame is he is tall and wins lineouts when the ball is thrown his way and his low tackling is usually effective. Against that, his breakdown work is only average and he has no power at all either running with ball or in mauls. Every Tahs match saw him brushed off by opposition players either in rucks or when tackling above the hips. He started the season as a reserve backrower for the Tahs and likely would have finished there except for injuries to better players, His luck changed in round 4 when Jack Dempsey, who was in great form, went down with an ankle injury. One might ask "well why does M.Cheika keep selecting him?" I can only imagine in Cheika's eyes he fills the same role as Dean Mumm, a lineout exponent who can go for 80 minutes with a bit of speed and who makes up for the lack of lineout ability of the team's #8 and #7. He can also fill in as lock if two others go down. Others have suggested Cheika is impressed by Ned's tough talking at training or Cheika sees a bit of himself; the yapping underdog winning against the odds. It helped that Mumm and Hanigan were Tahs players, so they knew the Tahs/WB system and of course there was no bias here; look the other way (coff coff). Its likely a combination of everything, who knows? But one thing for sure and that is the WB pack is like a car with a blown head gasket with Ned Hanigan and Sean McMahon in the team. It just doesn't work, the gains you get from their performance in some areas are far outweighed by their weaknesses in other areas. Sadly M.Cheika's pig headedness is keeping him from admitting the bleeding obvious and making the necessary changes.

PiratesRugby - spot on. What an embarrassing back row Cheika has for the Wallabies at present. I feel sorry for McMahon playing out of position and having to carry Hanigan while Hooper positions himself on the wing. Matt Hodgson retires one of the hardest 7's in the game and had been constantly overlooked by Sydney elite. To watch Reid come through to cleanly take the final kick off by the AB's in Dunedin in the last 3 minutes and not be challenged by our backrow was a great example of the difference that exists between our back row and those of teams in the top 3 in the world. If it isn't regional bias than somebody please explain why they are selecting boys to do a man's job?

Would Fardy have gone overseas if he wasn't treated so badly by Cheika? Same could be asked of Nic White, and Matt Toomua. Now admittedly White and Toomua were both in competitive positions, but it does seem that the Waratah players tend to get the rub of the green with Cheika.
