All the AFL trade rumours you need to know for 2017

By Josh / Expert

Richmond’s grand final win on Saturday has brought 2017 to a close, but now the silly season is just four days away as free agency opens on Friday.

For those of you like me who love this time of year it’s an exciting prospect as we look forward to seeing what moves the eighteen clubs make to take a step further in 2018.

This is a crucial time of year. Last October Richmond traded in three mature players in Dion Prestia, Josh Caddy and Toby Nankervis. I gave them an A+ in my trade period report card, and two days ago they all became premiership players for the club.

There’s always plenty of rumour and innuendo in the lead-up to trade time, and here I’ve put together all the most pertinent rumours, club-by-club, on who is set to swap guernseys this offseason.

You can also keep up to date with all the latest news on our AFL trade rumours page, which will be updated live throughout the next three weeks.

Of course, don’t take anything here as gospel! The trade period always throws us a few curveballs and I’m sure there are plenty to come in 2017.

Jake Lever – Set to request a trade to Melbourne by all reports. Adelaide reportedly want two first-round picks in return, but Melbourne have only offered a first and a second. Collingwood may try to swoop on the deal with a better offer. Out of contract.

Brisbane Lions

Michael Close – May get some interest from Collingwood and other clubs. Out of contract.

Stefan Martin – Rumoured to be interested in a trade home to Victoria. Contracted until the end of 2019.

Tom Rockliff – Looks like to leave the Lions. Port Adelaide or Carlton seem to be his most likely destinations, with the Power probably leading the race. Has also previously been linked to Adelaide and Geelong, and could still decide to remain at Brisbane. Restricted free agent.

Josh Schache – Despite him re-signing with the Lions earlier in the year, rumours about him still potentially being traded have not gone away. Collingwood and Western Bulldogs reportedly the clubs interested after Richmond ruled themselves out. Contracted until the end of 2019.

Carlton Blues

Bryce Gibbs – Expected to again seek a trade to Adelaide after Carlton refused to let him go last year. Contracted until the end of 2019.

Collingwood Magpies

Alex Fasolo – Despite reported interest from the West Coast Eagles, seems likely to stay at Collingwood. Contracted until the end of 2018.

Essendon Bombers

None.

Fremantle Dockers

Harley Balic – Has officially requested a trade home to Victoria. Linked with Melbourne, but he won’t be their number one priority. Out of contract.

Zac Clarke – Future uncertain at Fremantle so will likely take an offer from elsewhere if any is forthcoming. Unrestricted free agent.

Hayden Crozier – Expected to join the Western Bulldogs via trade. Out of contract.

Matt Taberner – Will likely take an opportunity elsewhere if there is any interest. Out of contract.

Geelong Cats

Darcy Lang – Doesn’t appear likely to get a new contract at Geelong and so will be open to a move elsewhere, perhaps to Gold Coast as part of the Gary Ablett deal. Out of contract.

Daniel Menzel – Geelong have offered him a one-year deal that would be a paycut on his 2017 season, so he will consider his options. Unrestricted free agent.

Steven Motlop – Port Adelaide, Adelaide and West Coast the three clubs with serious interest him, and he seems likely to move with Geelong not making any effort to retain him. Was previously linked with North Melbourne and Richmond, but these connections have gone cold. Restricted free agent.

Gold Coast Suns

Gary Ablett – Has officially requested a trade to Geelong. Gold Coast say they need to bring in a best 22 player to be convinced to let him go. Contracted until the end of 2018.

(AAP Image/Julian Smith)

Aaron Hall – Has reportedly been placed on the trade table by the Suns, will surely draw interest if so. Contracted until the end of 2018.

Brandon Matera – Has had a medical at Fremantle and will join them during the trade period. Out of contract.

Trent McKenzie – Some interest in him from Essendon. Out of contract.

Tom Nicholls – May move clubs after falling out of favour this year. Bulldogs have shown interest in the past. Contracted until the end of 2018.

Adam Saad – Reportedly looking at a move home to Victoria, with Carlton and Essendon interested. Contracted until the end of 2018.

Matt Shaw – Said to be on the trade table, with Carlton reportedly interested. Out of contract.

Rory Thompson – Hawthorn interested in his services and Gold Coast amy be open to a deal, though his manager says a trade is unlikely. Contracted until the end of 2019.

GWS Giants

Ryan Griffen – Some talk he could be traded to Carlton to make salary cap room as part of a larger deal, similar to the Rhys Palmer deal last year. However his management say he’ll stay at GWS. Contracted until the end of 2018.

Matthew Kennedy – Has officially requested a trade to Victoria, with Carlton reportedly leading the race for his services. Out of contract.

Devon Smith – Has officially requested a trade to Victoria, with Carlton reportedly leading the race for his services, but has also been linked to Essendon, Geelong, Hawthorn and Collingwood. Out of contract.

Heath Shaw – Giants have reportedly told him to ‘consider his future’. Contracted until the end of 2018.

Nathan Wilson – Has officially requested a trade to Fremantle. Contracted until the end of 2018.

Hawthorn Hawks

Taylor Duryea – The Hawks are reportedly open to letting him go, but a suitor hasn’t yet emerged. Unrestricted free agent.

Billy Hartung – Future uncertain at the Hawks and may attract interest from elsewhere. Out of contact.

Luke Hodge – More likely than not will come out of retirement to play for the Brisbane Lions next year. Brisbane say they are confident he will. Unrestricted free agent.

Paul Puopolo – Was linked to a move to GWS earlier in the year, but this has gone a bit quiet. Contracted until the end of 2018.

Tyrone Vickery – Hawthorn reportedly want to move him on after just a year at the club, but it’s hard to imagine there being any serious interest. Contracted until the end of 2018.

Melbourne Demons

Jack Watts – Looks set to the leave Melbourne this offseason, has met with Port Adelaide but there is reportedly also interest from Essendon and Sydney. Contracted until the end of 2019.

North Melbourne Kangaroos

Aaron Mullett – Has reportedly been told by the club that he should look elsewhere. Out of contract.

Braydon Preuss – Some talk going around that with North set to retain Todd Goldstein, he might be the target of other clubs. Contracted until the end of 2018.

Port Adelaide Power

Brendon Ah Chee – Gold Coast, West Coast and Fremantle all possible destinations if he chooses to move elsewhere for more opportunity, but it’s not clear if any clubs will offer him a deal and his AFL career may be over. Out of contract.

Jarman Impey – Both Western Bulldogs and Hawthorn reportedly interested in his services. Contracted until the end of 2018.

Jackson Trengove – Set to sign with the Western Bulldogs, has reportedly told teammates he is leaving. Restricted free agent.

Aaron Young – Gold Coast reportedly interested in him. Out of contract.

Richmond Tigers

Reece Conca – Likely to request a trade home to WA. Out of contract.

Ben Lennon – Will likely be open to a trade again this year after looking for one last year. Hasn’t gotten more opportunity despite starring at VFL level. Out of contract.

Anthony Miles – All but certain to move to a new club after falling out of favour at Richmond. Sydney said to have some interest. Out of contract.

St Kilda Saints

None.

Sydney Swans

Allir Allir – Despite reported interest from Fremantle, Sydney say he isn’t on the trade table. Contracted until the end of 2018.

Kurt Tippett – Despite rumours to the contrary, Sydney have publicly said he isn’t on the trade table. This may change if the Swans pick up Jack Watts. Contracted until the end of 2018.

West Coast Eagles

Andrew Gaff – Some talk that he could be targeted by clubs in Victoia, with St Kilda, Hawthorn and Essendon all potentially interested. Contracted until the end of 2018.

(Photo by Daniel Carson/AFL Media/Getty Images)

Tom Lamb – Although he is reportedly happy at West Coast, he may seek a trade regardless in search of greater opportunities. Out of contract.

Chris Masten – Has fallen out of favour at West Coast and will surely be open to a move elsewhere if anyone club is willing to take a punt on him, but that seems unlikely. Contracted until the end of 2019.

Western Bulldogs

Stewart Crameri – Only played two games this year, hasn’t been offered a new contract by the Dogs and seems unlikely to get one. He has been linked to Collingwood or even a return to Essendon. Out of contract.

Luke Dahlhaus – Opposition clubs reportedly believe he is gettable with the right trade offer. Contracted until the end of 2018.

Mitch Honeychurch – May look for more opportunity at another club. Out of contract.

Jake Stringer – Both Geelong and Essendon have been floated as his preferred destination, but his future is unclear after scandalous details about his past were recently made public. Also linked to St Kilda, Collingwood, North Melbourne. Richmond met with him but have publicly ruled themselves out of the race. Could still remain at the Bulldogs if a suitable alternative doesn’t arise, but that seems unlikely. Contracted until the end of 2018.

Oh Don - showing you up isn't what I am here for, it is just a happy by-product.

"Shown up?" Is that what you think this website is about? You are here for a different reason than everyone else. How very needy.

Don Freo - I know constantly being shown up by me must be frustrating for you but try not to lash out, instead try to learn from the experience.

Macca, you'd be much better off contributing to threads where your comments are valued. Granted, that limits you to 3 guys on Carlton stories but it would sure make things more pleasant for the rest of us. You just don't understand anything apart from you own little myopic world and cannot pick up on the spirit of exchanges between others. You feel it is your right to intrude with nastiness and bitterness. Perhaps there is an autism we need to be aware of. We can then adapt to you. If there is nothing we need to know and you still feel a need to intrude, don't. If you don't get something, just stay out of it. If you want to participate, leave the vicious personal stuff out of it. It only makes a comment about you.

I am constantly amazed by the amount you struggle Don. Sloth is one of the deadly sins FFS. Your comment " He just retired before he told Freo." itself points to moral and ethical issues.

You don't think Stringer's recently exposed issues are moral or ethical? What were the moral and ethical issues faced by Sylvia?

You obviously have a different view of morals and ethics. Remember "idle hands are the devils workshop". And if not Sylvia how about Shane Yarran? You got him really straight. Perhaps Stringer could head out on the town with Michael Johsnon to make sure he stayed out of trouble.

Sylvia had no ethical or moral issues. He just retired before he told Freo.

Is that like Freo' straightened out Colin Sylvia? As for Stringer and Waterhouse being dopplegangers - that is just more evidence of you having your own reality.

I wouldn't mind Stringer at Freo. The boys would straighten him out. We could even give him Clive Waterhouse's jumper. They are dopplegangers.

Devon Smith has officially chosen bombers as his preferred destination and apparently Stringer will also nominate the dons by the end of today.

It'll be interesting to see the light-hearted humour. So much on The Roar that purports to be satire ends up just being cliched insults directed at cheap targets. I have set the bar high for you, Rick, knowing you'd do the same for yourself.

Rick,I'm looking forward to your article,I havnt seen one from you in a while and I remember some previous articles being pretty good. It better be good though, this is the first article I can recall receiving a four week advertising blitz before its publication.

Don and AD,I'm in the opposite camp sorry,I like Walters forward, moving him into the midfield this year was a good idea though and helped him regain his form. I think Walters is the best small forward in the comp, who has far less weaknesses as a small forward than many I've ever seen.

Why do people think Pickett has made it already,he's miles off but still a chance. Lol Lamb and Phillips,9 GWS recruits for what seems one win (Plowman),one maybe (Marchbank) and one to soon to call (Pickett),the rest are busts. Carlton supporters values have dropped to an alarming level, the club went backwards from a low starting point, even the coach is yet to show any game plan and being painted prematurely as a success.
