Geelong's Thelma and Louise list management strategy

By Alphingtonian / Roar Pro

Like Thelma and Louise speeding their 1966 Ford Thunderbird toward the Grand Canyon so Chris Scott and Brian Cook with their list management strategy are speeding Geelong toward a list demographic cliff.

Cook and Scott have chosen to pursue a policy of topping up the list by trading in mature age players rather than fall down the ladder for a few years and rebuild the proper way.

It’s certainly not hard now to see it’s been a huge mistake that won’t pay off for the Geelong footy club but rather see them destroyed as a relevant on-field unit within three years.

Even in the present Geelong find themselves well and truly incapable of seriously challenging for a flag.

The last two Premiers have shown the blueprint for a flag is to build a list over time predominantly through the draft and recruit properly to build depth in the midfield and create a small/midsize forward line with speed, great tackling and pressure, and ground ball winning ability.

Geelong coach Chris Scott’s refusal to understand this following the Bulldogs victory last year is quite honestly astounding. The signs were there early on when in the 2016 draft Geelong chose the one paced Parfitt over the dynamic fast and skillful Shai Bolton.

Parfitt has been good for Geelong this year but was he really the style of player we needed? A one-paced albeit skillful player as opposed to the dynamic Bolton?

Why did Jamaine Jones not get promoted from the rookie list near the end of the season and be given a run up forward after showing some very promising form in the VFL with his speed, forward pressure, and dynamic goal-scoring ability?

Instead the one-paced James Parsons and Daniel Menzel were given continued opportunities in the small/midsize forward roles – Parsons it has been revealed was injured toward the end of the year with the coach saying there was nobody else they could replace him with. Menzel is now all but out the door.

Of the mature age recruits Geelong has traded in over the last six years how many of them would’ve been picked for either the Richmond or Adelaide teams on Saturday? I wager only Dangerfield and Tuohy would’ve made their way in to either side.

Given Geelong’s poor finals results and their individual performances in finals it’s quite clear that Lachie Henderson, Rhys Stanley, Sam Menegola, Scott Selwood (more due to his lack of pace than effort), and Zac Smith won’t be playing in Geelong’s next Premiership. So why do we hold on to them?

Aaron Black will no doubt be delisted soon and can join Mitch Clark and Hamish McIntosh as failed mature age recruits who hardly played a game over the last six years. Rhys Stanley should join them too, but wont due to our poor ruck stocks.

Questions need to be asked of our development – who under 25 at the club seems like they’ll be a genuine star in the future? Cockatoo possibly, best case scenario perhaps Zach Guthrie and Parfitt? Has Geelong developed a genuine star over the last 6 years? No. What is going on with our recruitment and development programs?

(Photo by Michael Willson/AFL Media/Getty Images)

Simple questions now also need to be asked of our list management strategy too – When will the club admit defeat on it’s ‘trade in and recruit for the now’ policy that clearly hasn’t delivered? Why would Geelong be recruiting Gary Ablett Jnr when pace is a clear deficiency in our midfield and wider team and at most he can give us 24 months of footy?

Why isn’t Geelong targeting fast dynamic forwards in the trade period? We know they’re looking at Jake Stringer but he’s only quick over the first five and laid a paltry eight tackles inside forward 50 for the whole 2017 season. Hardly the Rioli, Paul Puopolo, Jason Castagna, or Dan Butler types we’re crying out for up there.

Chris Scott and Cook want to bank wins at the soon to be named GMHBA stadium. Given the dimensions of the ground Scott knows that a tough contested stoppage based game style will win down there but it’s at the expense of being able to trouble the good teams on the MCG and in finals when the speed of the game increases and there’s a lot more space for teams to win it, get it to the outside, and with pace do real damage.

Wins at Kardinia Park keep the faithful happy and keep the crowds coming in which keeps the revenue-hungry Cook happy and keeps Scott in a job.

Everything’s become a bit too comfortable down at Geelong. However it’s clear now that drastic change is needed both to the game-plan and personnel if the Cats are seriously going to contend for a flag anytime soon.

It will take courage to change the game-style and risk losing more at Kardinia Park in order to win at the ‘G, and in finals. It will take hard calls on players, it will need Chris Scott and Brian Cook to take a hard look at themselves.

However judging by the comments of the President Colin Carter: “I think getting to the last four is a terrific effort, we’ve rebuilt the team in a way which you’re not supposed to be able to do and I’m sure we’ll be up around the mark next year again too. If somebody had said to us at the start of the year we’d make a prelim we would have shocked a lot of people and we would have been pretty happy,” it seems almost a certainty that nothing will change down at the GFC as it hasn’t for 6 long years.

The comments by Carter are all the more curious considering the club has told members it’s strategy is based on challenging for a premiership in the now.

Why would a club that thinks it’s seriously challenging for a flag be ‘pretty happy’ just making a Prelim only to be smashed by the losing Grand Final team two years in a row?

There are growing rumblings down the highway about Chris Scott’s communication problems and inability to get his team up for finals, at the failed recruitment strategy and the continued seeming satisfaction of Geelong’s results from the current President and CEO despite the horrific finals record of three wins from 11 finals since 2011.

Even incidents like Chris Scott and his assistants having to be called back from halfway down the race (following Geelong’s Preliminary final belting) to send Mackie and Lonergan off the ground in their last game are cause for concern and speak to the detached culture developing at Geelong.

The increasing dissatisfaction down Geelong way is being openly discussed by more than a few ex-players and powerbrokers and fills me with suspicions that a challenge to Cook and Carters positions within the GFC in the next 18 months is in no way beyond the realms of possibility and would also mean Scott goes.

In the meantime however don’t expect the Geelong Footy Club to be doing much different. In 2018 it’ll be the same old sad story.

Come the bye rounds of next season Geelong will have Harry Taylor 31, Tom Hawkins 29 (a month from 30), Lachie Henderson 28, Zac Smith 28, Scott Selwood 28, Joel Selwood 30, Dangerfield 28, Zach Tuohy 28, and probably Gary Ablett Jnr 34.

The last two Premiership sides have had only four players 28 or over in their starting lineup. The game is getting quicker and requires more athleticism than ever – it doesn’t bode well for teams full of older players.

With their impending recruitment of Ablett Jnr and rumours swirling of Mitch Duncan being involved in a possibly larger deal, as well as Steven Motlop and Darcy Lang leaving, the big concern for some Cats fans is that Thelma and Louise aren’t just heading toward the cliff, they now seem like they’re putting their foot down and speeding toward it.

Peter T I just feel sorry for you if you think Geelong will win the flag next year. However there are worse things in the world than blind faith in your footy team.

Who says Cat is a he? Alpha, I hope you don't buy a membership and miss out on a spot at the GF for the flag we win next year! It would be all you deserve as a doubting Thomas

Macca - I forgot about the mid 2000s Carlton, but yeah it continues to prove my point. There is the caveat with rebuilding that I made clear in my previous post, you really need a competent administration and footy department overseeing it or it can turn in to a disaster like Melbourne, and Richmond's rebuilds in the mid to late 2000s. Having said that though Geelong's tried the complete opposite approach over the last 6 years and haven't won a flag or really been in serious contention for one and will now have to begin a full rebuild very soon any way.

I don't see why Geelong is copping all the hate and tough criticism when what you have described, proves incorrect when you compare Geelong with other teams. Needless I remind you, Geelong has barely ever had top draft picks, yet through great coaching, teamwork and persistence, they were able to achieve the flag back in 2007. It did take years to rebuild and make that quality team but it was more through coaching than being gifted with good picks just because we chose to finish lower in the ladder and claimed it was our "time to rebuild". I don't know if you don't like Geelong or have high expectations for them, however, to consistently be in the top 8 for over 10 years, finish top 2 in 8 out of 11 seasons, 3 premierships out of 4 grand final appearances and even make back to back prelims, is pretty outstanding. Now people say, "that's not enough, you've got to win the flag to be good", but that's bull considering how many bottom 10 teams have beaten the top 8 on numeral occasions this year. Much of the wins ultimately just depend on the day rather than skill or wins this season. You're also claiming that it is important to build your team with good drafts and young players? Gold Coast, St Kilda, Melbourne, Fremantle, Brisbane Lions are just a few to mention that have taken this strategy yet still have no progress... some of which is even taking over 50 years?! Geelong is taking the strategy of mixing the more experienced with the younger guns, and that worked in the past for us and sure can still work. I'd rather a team that is still in fighting contention for a flag than a team that has publicly deemed that they're rebuilding.

Alphingtonian - Even the blues who were possibly the worst list in modern history by the time the were back in the draft in 2005 were back in finals by 2009 and won 10 games in 2008. Admittedly they did top up with Judd at the end of 2007 but the point still stands. I would be very surprised if the blues aren't in finals again well before most people predict as being 5 plus years from now, these things generally take a lot less time than most think if they are done properly.

The fact you say 'we give up for the next 5 years to play finals after that.' shows how little you understand Cat. By the way you already support a club that did that from 2000 to 2005 - it worked out pretty well for us in the end didn't it? As it has for the Tigs and Bullies. I agree the draft isn't the be all and end all and I've never argued otherwise but drafted and developed players should make up the vast core of your list with only a few players traded in to fill holes. That's the model that worked for the Cats in 2007/09/11, for the Hawks in 2008, The Doggies in 2016, and Tiges in 2017. The majority of Premiers over the last 10 years have followed my preferred model. Also most teams with a competent administration that have rebuilt have been back in finals within 3 to 4 years. The Bulldogs started their rebuild in 2012 and were back in finals by 2015, the Tigs started properly with Hardwick and a competent administration in 2010 and were in finals by 2013, even Geelong back in the day started in 2000/2001 and were in finals again by 2004. As for the Saints they started with severely compromised drafts due to GWS back in 2012 and now in 2017 find themselves just outside the 8 ready to make a leap forward in the next few years - it may not work out for them but they've only had a competent and solid admin for the last few years so it's a work in progress and judgement should be withheld.

Well Pete the Scribe I agree with you about Geelong falling soon, whether it be next year or not is pretty irrelevant as even if the Cats finish somewhat up there next year they won't be a serious contender. As for Cat he/she just wants the best for the club as do I and I can understand that. Unfortunately Cat can't and thinks I'm the devil incarnate because I'm critical of the club and think it can be better than it has been over the last half a decade, and can be better with different personnel at the top in the future than it will be if Cook and Scott stay.

Level of regret: –10/10
Maybe you should check your reading glasses, you've missed the very clear – sign. We can play the hypothetical 'we may have picked any number of players' all day long. As each year goes by it will be easier and easier to say in hind sight 'we should have done x instead of y. We also could have very easily picked another Mitch Brown, Kane Tennace or had another year like 2009 where we picked good players but most of them have missed the better part of 5 years since being drafted. You talk of going to the draft like it is this guaranteed thing. It isn't. Not even close. How many rebuilds of rebuilds has Melbourne gone through despite all those high draft picks they kept getting? And still they haven't even made finals. How about them Saints, started a rebuild right around the time of your '6 year window' you seem obsessed with. How's that going for them? They are still behind us and early opinions are seem to be they might need to do another rebuild because the list they have isn't that good. How about the Suns? They've had mountains of top picks, hasn't helped them at all. The draft isn't the 'be all - end all' of list management. It is only a tool, one of many. Any club that isn't using every tool out there is a failure. Clubs that just throw their hands up in the air and say 'okay we give up for the next 5 years so we might have a chance to win some finals after that' are not clubs I would ever support.

Cat - a minor correction Tuohy is about to turn 28 in December - he was 26 when you got him but turned 27 very shortly after - not 25. Henderson in also going to turn 28 in December so while he was 25 when you got him it was 25 and 11 months. I have said before those trades were win win for both the blues and the Cats but they could cause a bit of a pyramid scheme issue for the Cats.

Good to see you taking Cat to task Alph as he blindly believes the Cat patchwork strategy will work despite a 3 wins from 11 finals performance since 2011. Just watch Cat disappear as they fall down the ladder next year and finally realise they need to start again. Post 2010-11 era it seems the Saints and Pies will strike back before the slow old felines now,

No, there's a lot you selectively haven't mentioned. There is also much you seem to have made up that you ascribe to disgruntled, influential others that you just can't name. Try rising to Cat's challenge and name/quote them...if they exist beyond 3 drinking mates in the stand.

Agree completely Mattyb. It's tiring, predictable, and boring how tyrannical some 'supporters' can be in their intolerance of different views about their club.

Well regarding the dissatisfaction of ex-players etc. I can post you links to articles by both Cam Mooney and Kent Kingsley stating that current players feel a disconnect with Scott. Mooney said at the start of this season Scott has two years to win a flag or should go (one's already elapsed without him doing so) and Kent came out and plainly said Scott is a bad coach in finals who has too much of a disconnect with too many players down there. So there's two ex-players I've named dissatisfied with Scott and the club themselves, also I can post you a link to KRock and you can listen to Tim Mcgrath's disgust with the clubs efforts in finals over recent years and the coaches following the Prelim - so there is three. Not to mention Ben Casanelia who works for both Krock and SEN and who's written articles incredibly critical of Scott and Cook (for re-signing him) and again saying in his articles that current players feel a huge disconnect with Scott. So if these guys are all talking about it publicly on radio you don't think any of them are talking in private to either former GFC board members, current board members, or those hopeful to be future board members?? Are you that naïve? Don't forget Bartel also had a falling out with Scott in recent years, and Scott and Ling aren't on the best terms either...Believe what you want and I'll believe what I want.

Well Don did I mention the last 30 years anywhere in any of my articles? No. I mentioned the last 6 in which Geelong has continually failed monumentally in finals and I think the club deserves criticism for that and can do better. I loved the Bomber Thompson era all the way through and never criticised the club because you could see they had a clear plan and direction. Geelong post 2011 has been a reactive muddled club with no discernable plan to win a flag. You've got to sell hope to the fans and right now for many Geelong fans (those who are realists at least) there is no hope - that's why we need a cleanout now and to start the rebuild in earnest that we so desperately need.

You have a 10/10 level of regret for getting Dangerfield - really? Poor editing of your post there Cat. I never said anywhere in my piece that I regretted the Tuohy or Dangerfield deals?!? I did however pot Henderson and quite rightly he's been simply awful in finals for Geelong and will be lucky to be a 5 year player at the club let alone 7 year as you claim. You also make the ridiculous assumption that Geelong would've drafted in the same players as Brisbane? If you want to deal in hypotheticals then yes Brisbane did draft Berry but Powell Pepper was the next pick and Alex Witherden only went a few later could Geelong not have drafted them? I'm sure every Cats fan would rather have them being incredibly young with huge futures adding depth to our midfield than the plodder in Henderson...Would you?

That is a claim. You are claiming there are 'more than a few ex-players and powerbrokers' that are dissatisfied and are discussing it openly. So who are they and where has this open discussion taken place? Your suspicion only applies to 'a challenge to Cook and Carters positions'.

Sounds like a wish or a dream. No challengers in their right mind would try to usurp Brian Cook. They would have no hope of winning. He has been way too effective for anyone to want to remove him...apart from reasons of sabotage.
