Pearce looking to leave Roosters: Report

By News / Wire

Mitchell Pearce is reportedly looking at his options to leave NRL club Sydney Roosters.

News Corp Australia reported that the NSW halfback wasn’t happy that his side was closing in on a deal to secure the services of Cooper Cronk.

While signed on for two more years at the Roosters, questions were soon raised about Pearce’s immediate future after his side was linked to the Melbourne star.

A formal announcement of a two-year Roosters deal for the Australian halfback Cronk is expected next week.

Various reports had emerged including a potential move for Pearce to play hooker at the Roosters but with the established club co-captain Jake Friend in that role it seems unlikely.

Manly is looming as a possible home for Pearce, NRL.com reporting that the Sea Eagles have already had discussions with the 28 year-old.

As with moving to hooker however, Manly seems an odd choice due to their established number seven Daly Cherry-Evans, who is on a lifetime deal with the club.

Cherry-Evans had his best ever season in 2016, pushing for Origin selection.

Pearce has established himself as the best New South Wales halfback over the past ten seasons – playing 17 matches for NSW in the State of Origin. He has also been rumoured as a target of the struggling Newcastle Knights in their ongoing rebuilding process.

Just last weekend Roosters boss Nick Politis said he wanted to keep Pearce until he was 35.

Pearce has yet to comment publicly on the issue.

JT wasn't forced to play there but believed the team was more dangerous, After the retirement of Lockyer, with him at six and Cronk at seven, then if he remained at seven and Cronk was on the bench. Remember from 2005 - 2010, Thurston was the regular QLD half while Cronk was, on occasions, an interchange player. Clearly, JT was seen as the best number seven of the two. Cronk is a very good half-back but suggesting JT isn;t a better seven simply is supported by the careers of the two players. In fact, Cronk's first national call up was to replace the injured JT who was the test number seven.

I think the point being made is that all the top quality half-backs of the last 10 years have been Queenslanders.

Oh please the best number 7 in NSW in the last 10 years i rate him about number 10, how many origin series have we won in that time a big zero he only got in the team cause daddy was on the committee DCE would kick his butt as a player.

Nikorima is on 350K.....Cronk would be asking in excess of 1 million....probably closer to 1.2. Are we supposed to believe the Roosters were prepared to go into this year with a 1 million dollar war chest? If the Roosters are allowed to sign Cooper without losing any players then the salary cap is officially a joke....we may as well scrap it altogether.

3 minor premierships and a Grand Final ring say otherwise. Sure he has never stood up during origin but his club record speaks for itself...

Have you seen the footage? That fact that you thought the dog was fake leads me to believe you haven't. Like you I don't agree with people being filmed in private residences without their knowledge. Despite this his actions were misogynistic and inappropriate, the implications of what he was suggesting are clear (even without being there). Pearce was one of the first to admit this afterwards. Attempting to make money out of others mistakes is wrong, but Pearce's actions that night can't be written off as 'boys will be boys.' The incident seems to have been a big wake up call for him and that may have been the best thing to come out of the video being leaked.

Don't need to, With Nikorema supposedly leaving the club can fit Cronk under the cap without Pearce moving on. Now if pearce wants to throw his toys out of the cot and leave then he can ask for a release if not play on the bench.

TPI's are outside the salary cap. That explains everything when it comes to the Roosters and the Broncos and the Storm and a few other clubs as well, but not all of them.

I agree Cronk is great in a system surrounded by superstars. Players like Sterling, Stuart, Langer , Joey and JT they not only had the physical capabilities they also had great vision. Cronk has these attributes, but I have never seen the guy play with average players. Plus anybplay maker who plays with Smith is going to be automatically a better performing player IMO

Sign Tedesco then sign Cronk which frees up Pearces bickies to sign Sonny Boy Williams. Funny how fans bag a club when the leaders take steps to secure a premiership. Bozo fixed up the dodgy old Sea Eagles yet got mauled by the fans. I'd say if the Roosters think they are short a forward or two they could hunt around and snare him before or during the season. Mitchell Moses moved during the season. Which ever teams have a dismal start to the season could have some disgruntled players looking to move clubs. The Roosters wouldn't be the worst place to end up!

that comment about Langer and Sterling (more so Langer) was more in reference to Qld and Australia. Also I meant to carrying as to get the best of out of players that are available not be a one man show. Apologies for the confusion.

Lets face it. Pearce is good as he is ever going to get. With Cronk directing the team around the park they will have a much better chance of a premiership. For years every one has complained about Pierce now they look like replacing everyone he's sooking up. Rugby league is about winning a premiership and sometimes their are casualties. Pearce can either pull his finger out ad play on or look to play somewhere else. That's his choice, but from all reports he's going to take the easy way out. What did Clint say in one of his movies -- a mans got to know his limitations.

Were you there? Did you see or hear everything that happened Louis? And by the way, I'm no fan of Pearce as a footballer. Just sick of the way people make money out of other peoples mistakes in life.

Oops. The report i read Joe said stuffed toy. I stand corrected. But to me, unless he harmed the dog, weve all done stupid things when we were young. How was he to know some person was just waiting to pounce to sell a photo of it.

I like pearce as a first grader. I think what he does is often miscategorised and misunderstood, like when Gould trotted out the drop out stat something like 4 years ago to hammer his kicking game but ignoring that the roosters team was scoring more tries off kicks. But your view is a little overweight the positive. Yes the team was rudderless… now why was that? Was it because despite the team having multiple contingencies in place to prevent him from “being him” he was hell bent on breaking them and then put himself in a potion where he hurt the team. The team didn’t languish because he was missing, they languished because he was a selfish narcissistic prat that threw away the rooster’s season. I feel the punishment was overly harsh but the only reason the team was in that position was decisions made by Pearce. Pearce “leads” like a cool kid. He's aloof, arrogant and dismissive, if you ever see a team function he sits and waits for the others to flock to him. To be fair he’s not alone amongst talented playmakers guys like Wally Lewis and Johns were the same. The only problem for Pearce... he isn’t in that league. He’s got the ego of an all-time great but the game of a very good first grader. So he’s got some options here, he can take his battered ego at not being made the focal point of the team and move to another club or he can go, hey I legitimately care about helping my team win games so I’m actually happy with adding the Australian halfback. Pearce would want to be careful, I think he's probably got a longer leash than he'll have at another club. If he leaves I’ll be thankful for the service he’s given, he’s been a great first grader who has provided plenty of fond memories. But I won’t feel like the club has turned its back on him, the roosters have afforded him more opportunities and leeway than he deserved if he doesn’t value that then fine, no harm no foul.

I think you've got a misinformed view of Johns. Do I like Joey the person, no. But to suggest he couldn't carry a team means you paid very little attention to his career. Likewise JT. Sometimes also the guy "forced out" is the guy more capable of adapting to the other position
