Wallabies DIY player ratings vs Japan: The results

By The Roar / Editor

The results are in! Yesterday we asked you to help us rate the performance of our Wallabies in their win over Japan. We’ve crunched the numbers and have all the results below.

Tatafu Polota-Nau couldn’t have time what was ultimately a best-on-ground and probably career-best performance any better than he did.

With word going around that he will likely be headed to an overseas club after not getting any offers from Super Rugby teams, clubs around the world – and in Japan in particular – will now be very aware of just how talented he is.

With an average rating of 8.06 and a most common rating of 9, the voters liked him better than any other Wallaby to take to the field on Saturday.

At the other end of the news, perennial whipping boy Ned Hanigan returned to the field after Jack Dempsey’s hamstring injury, but didn’t do much to justify his spot.

His average rating of 4.58 was the worst in the side, though Nick Phipps with 4.76 didn’t fare much better.

Check out the full results below and let us know what you thinking in the comments.

No tight 5 Player has an ambassador deal with Seiko either Coincidence?. Highlights Hogs Sell Watches, Not the Piggies up front. Too Cynical? As long as we can all see the corporate motive behind it, we can than downgrade it's significance.

Fionn, If Folau can get 8.5 at fullback, it clearly isn't about the number on the jumper, it is the overall performance. For Hodge: Average performance as a play maker - [5], but for the rest of his contributions including second fullback, kicking duties and general pay, an [8] is fair.

I didn't pay much attention to him, but Phipps first two touches were errors that cost the team. First a pass to no one resulting in a knock on then a box kick to touch in goal. Maybe he's a nice guy, maybe he's an ok player in some conditions, but he is NOT in the discussion for the best halfback in the country

Hey Waxhead, too much sun shining in one ear and straight out the other. I have never read so much straight out garbage from anyone, including Drongo. I think its time you took that full sized poster of Quade off your bedroom ceiling.

Thanks for letting me know that Peter, makes it worthwhile now. I do love to sit in judgment when I know I’m damn-well right!

since it is optional per player to provide a score now, you could just score the handful of players you watch closely

Yeah I stopped voting ages ago, unless I rewatched a game at least once (and I rarely do) I found I just couldn’t satisfy myself that I was being accurate and reasonable across the board. I tend to watch only a handful of players closely, so I’m confident in my judgement only in relation to some of them. I wish more people would take the same approach in elections! When in doubt, STFU :)

Phipps average of 4.76 is too low, the most common of 6 is about right. Kerevi had a far better game than Hodge yet Hodge scores almost the same as Kerevi.

I made the same point about Hodge;s performance, it was about the same as Foley normally gives. Intercept pass, passes to ground, and good short pass for a try. He did kick and defend better but didn't support play as well. Foley gets under rated on his good days and Hodge has been over rated. He only deserved a 6 for this performance IMO.

riddler, no doubt Foley cops a lot of flack, won’t argue with you there. And being the flyhalf, he is always in the spotlight - but I’d argue that cuts both ways: if he throws 2 shocking passes, that’s all some people remember, similarly if he throws 2 crackers, that sticks in the memory too. Depending on the poster, I would also agree plenty of it is either unwarranted or at least OTT. But I don’t agree that it’s all unwarranted or OTT. Personally I think his performances objectively range between 4.5 and 7.5, rarely a 4 but also rarely an 8. Of course, reasonable minds can differ in that regard.

yep.. their credibility has gone.. which is a bit annoying as we all love our rugby, otherwise why would we take the time to read and comment... would be nice if we could just watch a game and give an unbiased review..

I thought Simmons was a bit sloppy, some loose carries and maybe a penalty or two.

Thank god the roar voters don’t have any say in selections, we’d never win another game. Terrible judges.

I rewatched the game yesterday specifically to focus on Phipps, because my suspicion is that the majority here are basically clueless. Here’s what I saw on his 65 mins: 3 errors, all in the first half. One dropped ball, one kick that got a roll on and went dead, and one tackle he bounced off. I also saw him score a try, set up I Simmons for another, and recover several loose balls by putting his body on the line. He did not throw a single ill-directed pass in the entire game. He threw one to TPN that he caught in from of his chin, and one to Beale that he had to reach slightly down for. That’s it. Every other pass was fast and accurate. None went behind a player, none caused a player to slow down. He played a good game. My conclusion is that most people here don’t actually have a clue what they’re talking about and are either just parroting someone equally clueless, or are so blinded by prejudice that they can’t accept what’s happening in front of them.

dave seriously.. you don't think he is given a rough time on the roar? check the scores of the roar... then check his teammates, 3rd, and also the rugby press, if they do player ratings down south still.. the guy cops it left, right and centre on this blog.. he is not our greatest flyhalf ever.. but he definitely is not our worst.. but reading on here some of the comments it is as though the guy couldn't even make the u/13d team at a public school team.. (meaning that there never is a d team in public schools) personally can't remember many moments of brilliance from noddy or bernie, superb players but remembering actual moments, i just don't have it.. maybe it is my age or memory.. i do have though 3 no. 10 moments i do remember, clearly, noddy vs ireland in 91, bernie vs the saffas in 99.. foley vs england in 15.. lynagh got copped at lot from nsw fans and press.. he wasn't always the chosen one.. larkham was in act and also was just a freak of a player.. foley is a very good player and with time will hopefully be remembered more fondly than he currently is..

Riddler I would have to check the past results for any evidence of it, but I suspect Foley doesn’t fall into the “whipping boy” category. Or at lease he’s not a strong case. Yes he cops a lot of flack, but he also has a lot of supporters, same with Hooper. So I suspect that the biases against/for them somewhat cancel each other out. Maybe not fully, tho. For guys like Hanigan, Phipps, Mooore, it’s seems everyone is either unfairly against them, or just neutral - they don’t tend to have the over enthusiastic supporters who counteract the over enthusiastic detractors. Anyway, just a theory. On Hodge, I suspect Fionn is right, plus he booted 9/9.

yep.. and the non-foley factor... foley delivered a few nice inside balls in the june tests and scored a few meat pies himself.. but he didn't get above 5... even when r.roberts (quade's defender and fanboy) on the other site gave him man of the match vs fiji.. i like hodge.. personally i don't think he is a ten, but am very happy to be proved wrong... it just got a bit frustrating/sad reading after every test foley getting the worst or second worst grade in every game bar one or near abouts... yet finished 3rd within his own team mates and is significantly more highly regarded up here by rugby jounros, players and ex players..

'mitigating circumstances, such as first time at 10, i never thought came into performance reviews.. one is reviewed on that task which was asked and how it was completed..' That's fair to say. I can't say I rated the players, however, but I suspect that people gave Hodge a bit more leeway what analysing his performance given his performance as he set up a few tries, such as the lovely inside ball to Speight, and kicked very well, but did make a few errors.

cheers matey.. mitigating circumstances, such as first time at 10, i never thought came into performance reviews.. one is reviewed on that task which was asked and how it was completed.. it would be nice if the reviews were without the emotions but i guess that is impossible..

Riddler, I actually see your point and it is a fairly valid one. The one thing I will say, however, is that it was Hodge's first ever hit out at 10 for the Wallabies (and from memory he has only played there once for the Rebels last year) so I think he gets a bit more leeway than Foley or another longterm 10 does.
