Hayne flops, Holmes flies as Australia make World Cup final

By News / Wire

An ill-disciplined Jarryd Hayne has thrown in a bit of everything as his Rugby League World Cup campaign came to a grinding halt in Brisbane.

The Fijian five-eighth looked to inject himself early in the semi-final against Australia but only helped the host’s cause by conceding a series of silly penalties.

Hayne was felled by David Klemmer after kicking in the opening moments and took his frustration out on Kangaroos fullback Billy Slater, his shoulder charge sparking a scuffle between the sides.

The two-time Dally M Medal winner clashed with Slater again soon after to concede another penalty, with goal kicking skipper Cameron Smith accepting both gifts to help build an early 12-2 lead.

And while his kicking game caused Australia some anxious moments, the 29-year-old also let them off the hook with at least two errant passes when his team was on the attack.

It ended 54-6, the Kangaroos the first team through to next Saturday’s final and Valentine Holmes incredibly adding six tries to eclipse his Australian record quarter-final haul of five.

Hayne also lost his share of the World Cup try-scoring record when Slater crossed for his 15th four-pointer in the first half.

The lopsided result ended a charmed World Cup run for Fiji, highlighted by last weekend’s 4-2 quarter-final defeat of New Zealand.

Contracted to Gold Coast for 2018, Hayne is scheduled to join preseason training on the tourist strip in early January.

But that may be unlikely, with Titans coach Garth Brennan earlier this week conceding reports of his return to Parramatta had “some merit”.

Despite initially denying he had been in talks with Sydney clubs, Hayne is tipped to ask for a release early next year and return to the Eels.

Hayne is an ill disciplined, selfish, inconsistent show pony. It's not a case of some games are good and some games are bad, it's a matter of fading in and out of games. When coaches say anything and try to focus the obvious talent into something that would make the team better, the coach ends up on the unemployment line. This guy is toxic and the sooner he leaves the Gold Coast to the Eels the better, $1.2m is far too much for this guy, I wouldn't pay $.2mfor him.

The biggest flop of the night was the Brisbane crowd - stadium half full and next to no atmosphere. Likewise at the Gabba , if it was not for the Barmy Army it would of played even more embarrassing . Apart from SOO Queenslanders simply don't show up - would move future games to Melbourne and let the Victorians enjoy our teams with pride.

A good number from that Tongan team have represented NSW and NZ, they should have won easily but nah.

Agree JK. All the clowns who come onto this site just to criticise the RLWC should just watch the last 20 seconds of that match a few times to realise the Pacific Nations have now jumped on the good ship RL.

So close for Tonga republican, RL heaven for sure. RL now has a genuine top 4 and probably only a decade away from a genuine top 6. That not even including France.

I think the world cup as a whole has been ok but you have to worry about the credibility of the australian rugby league fans has to be questioned by the very poor attendance figures Not only at the pool games but to only get 22k to support your home nation in a semi is very very poor. It's very obviously they have not treated it seriously. Sure the tragics will say it has rated really good on tv but what are we a nation of lounge lizards.

You mean in a country of 65m people where the game came from? Nice comparison. If it's so interesting, why are you on here talking about league crowds? T-R-O-L-L

This Tournament is a farce! Australia vs Australia A played in front of less than half the stadium capacity in Australia!

Probably a good summation & actually devoid of the usual bile. Despite others (or one person frankly) saying we (didn't know I am responsible for what the RLWC organisers have done) are out to 'con' people. Slater, Smith & co did deserve better opposition (though if Fiji decided to play a bad game that was it cos they showed great potential against a decent Kiwi side) & they deserved a better crowd but their success & those before them have made intl RL in Australia very much maligned.

most rugby union players who represent tonga, samoa, fiji, romania, georgia, usa, etc don't play rugby in those respective countries..they gravitate towards where the money is..

Yes, Andrew. I think we've seen that a few times in this WC - where an NRL or Super League player is teamed with players who play in lesser leagues, and they struggle to make things happen. Its often no fault of their own, but a function of the mismatch of abilities and experience. I noticed it first with Tedesco in some of the Italy games, and then a little in the Lebanese games. Still, its to be expected in a tournament where nations and their players can be in different stages of development, and we're trying to grow the game.

It's seriously a joke that there is a person out there with serious disorders to do this. Funny for a while but disturbing overall.

"it is a “con” to try to make us believe that the players representing many of the countries actually play League in those countries. " see this is where your trolling lets you down because you don't care if they play league in these countries or not, that is not your purpose here. There are domestic comps/activity in every country represented in the RLWC, that's a fact. Whether its small or large isn't a matter as long as there are people who enjoy taking their fav sport to new markets because that's what living in the free world allows. I don't know why you have such a hard time accepting this. You're not fooling anyone. Your ID shows you signed up this month just like a whole heap of ID's in a coincidental rush? I don't think so. And I doubt the average NRL fan would know much about RL's developments overseas despite your assertions that they have not been 'conned' . I doubt 99% of them would know the Toronto Wolfpack exists. Are you going to tell me the Wolfpack are a con? They don't play to 7-8,000 crowds, don't get coverage from Canadian newspapers, CBS etc? Your logic is flawed because you have none!

There was no con wag. Nobody tried to pretend either where these players are from or where they play. So what is your point? Like the id though. Says it all

Ha ! Ha! Typical response, Justin ! I, too, enjoy watching the fair dinkum games -- like Aust. v Poms etc., but NOT some 3rd-string Aussie team v some 3rd-string Pom team ! (Although I agree that Kiwis v Tonga was a great match with a great atmosphere -- thanks to the Tongans living in NZ). Suncorp Stadium is often filled (52,500) for some great NRL games such as Broncos v Cowboys, and is sold out months in advance for Origin. Yet, interestingly, for Brisbane's first game of this series, the stadium was less than half-full (22,000) for a World Cup SEMI-FINAL !! -- with many local Fijian fans understandably making up a good % of that crowd ! My only point (that you seem to have mis-interpreted) was that it is a "con" to try to make us believe that the players representing many of the countries actually play League in those countries. Obviously, by avoiding this SEMI-FINAL, many Brisbane fans showed that they have not been "conned". !
