Women's NRL competition announced for 2018

By Scott Pryde / Expert

The NRL has announced a new women’s competition will begin in 2018, aiming to capitalise on the success of the Jillaroos at the recent Rugby League World Cup.

The newly-announced women’s premiership will be played at the back end of the season – throughout the lead-up to and during the NRL finals, with games set to be played as double-headers.

The competition is expected to feature six teams, although they will not be announced until the new year, with state leagues to be played as they were in 2017 during the winter months.

Finals of those state leagues will be played as double-headers alongside NRL Women in League round matches during the 2017 season before the women’s national competition gets underway.

In another giant step forward, it’s also been confirmed the grand final of the women’s competition will be played on NRL grand final day, which is one of the biggest day’s on Australia’s sporting calendar.

The NRL have also announced a stand-alone Women’s State of Origin match will be played on the new form of representative weekend. It will feature the men’s State of Origin Game 2 on Sunday afternoon, Pacific Test matches and the women’s match.

This is a step up with the women’s match formerly known as the interstate challenge and brings it on equal footing with the men’s game.

In another boost, 40 players will be on Jillaroos contracts, with the national team likely to play more Tests in New Zealand and the Pacific during 2018.

NRL CEO Todd Greenberg said it creates a pathway which gives players the opportunity to perform.

“For the first time, there will be a dedicated pathway for our women to follow – from grassroots junior league, to State Competitions, and on to Premiership matches and representative Origin and Test match opportunities,” Greenberg said.

“The Women’s game has become an attraction in its own right and anyone who has seen the Jillaroos in action cannot help but be impressed by the skills and athleticism on display.

“The NRL is determined to provide the right channels for women to follow and play rugby league – and today is a great starting point for that program.”

The competition has been in the pipeline for some time, but Greenberg has previously talked about building enough talent to not rush the competition into existence.

“We are not going to rush in with a larger competition until we have the numbers to give it the quality it deserves,” he said.

“But I have no doubt that, as more women take up the game, the competition will grow.”

The fact Aligee you feel the need, to devote so much time here to post and dominate with anti rl comments, shows either commenting on your code's threads must be boring, or you feel anxious the NRL is finally getting its act together. That Sir is insecurity and dare I say it comedic. Nothing wrong with soy, people within your own code use it.

This so called "sad" women's rugby league world cup,(the initial one BTW) ,was able to draw better Tv ratings here at times ,than the codes you follow in this country. It is because of cups like this, that is helping grow the game. Now in England ,many of the SL clubs are introducing women';s teams, and junior female rl is flourishing there as it is here. Thus both the AFL and the NRL have shown in regards to women participating in their respective codes, they don't need Olympics or huge World Cups to participate.

Im neither an AFL or Rugby League supporter but its clear as day the Womens comp was fastforwarded to try get some traction in the womens sporting scheme. You look at: The Matildas- One of the best teams in the World. Union Team- established proper International side with olympic opportunities. AFL- The comp keeps going from strength to strength. If the NRL sat on their hands for any longer there would be NO catching up. You only have to look at the state of the womens game at that World Cup they threw together. It was really sad, even more sad than the mens attempt of a World Cup

To keep up with AFLW the NRL fast tracked NRLW, its pretty clear. There is nothing to be ashamed about, its business. Yet if you read the replies you would think that the AFL growing girls AF in NSW and QLD has nothing whatsoever to do with it. Yet business sense let alone protecting your turf says the opposite.

It may well be so Terry. .But the point is the Women's comp is here in this country and will be watched here on a regular basis ,by players living close to family. In direct contrast to a 7s tournament, which people here have little interest except every 4 years.Just like the mens.Sorry to report the facts.

Quite a few are housewives, or working in professions or other careers.Travelling the world for a month or so would be great, being away for quite a while not so. Only a small number can get the gig anyway, and the OPs is 4 yearly.Little local attention is devoted to Ruby 7s of whatever sex played overseas.

Aligee I'm stating the simple fact rugby league for women at the highest level Jillaroos has been around for 20 plus years. In England since 1985. It's therefore not a case of what i think black or blue or aqua. I am arguing the obvious point with 190,000 girls and women involved in various types of rugby league,(Contact and touch) which grew 32% in the last year, added to women already contracted for example by the Sharks, publicly acknowledged by Greenberg and his staff, the pool of players is there. The NRL even early this year was not going to rush into the competition, but wait till they had the experience and not go ahead and grab players from another code, like a code I know did. The regional and bush competitions and their skills, plus those in the city changed their thinking.Other female sport has been around before the AFLW mate. Your opinion via your AFL missionary zeal here, goes against 190,000 female players of all ages, against females already playing rugby league and some contracted before the NRL's decision, against the Jillaroos and NZ Ferns being in existence before the AFLW comp.Yeah I know who I would be backing. Are you aware that one of the female interviewers on Foxtel NRL Yvonne Sampson actually played rugby league, but because they could not play it after 12 ,had to stop.It has happened in many junior rl comps, including my area. The only thing "obvious" mate is your zeal in promoting your code here in a rugby league thread.Unfortunately it doesn't cut ice with us.The one thing that i find obvious is the insecurity engendered by the decision to go ahead with this new competition,as evidence by the content of your posts. I cannot imagine many if any rl fans , going onto AFL threads when the AFLW comp was announced.Maturity perhaps?

@ cross coder, i think the olympic rugby 7's did speed up AFLW, but i am not arguing that other womens comps didnt, but you claim blue in the face that NRLW has nothing to do with being a counter to AFLW. IMO it most certainly does, it is in fact pretty obvious, what's more i don't see the problem admitting it.

And I repeat Aligee, the NRLW comp was not done in a rush, just because your mob came into existence.Talk about pretentious. The funding also was not available under prior Tv contracts, money has been allocated to the jillaroos. One could argue the AFLW comp, was rushed due to women's cricket, the success of the matilda's,Rugby 7s,and women's basketball. Female participation for rl ,a few years ago was minimal, the demand grew as a result of non contact version league Tag and the integration of Touch football under the NRL banner have boosted the numbers. The Women have had a national team for over 20 years,England since 1985. Research buddy, not assumptions because AFL apparently split the atom.

Then he tries to justify all this mumbo jumbo by saying we denied that his sport forced the NRL to respond. I've gone through initial conversations & we've said nothing of the sort. Trying to justify his real aim to trash another RL thread.

@bubble boys 16 womens teams next year in the Black Diamond league, that's gotta hurt in the RL centric hunter. 30 NEW under 12's girls teams in Sydney last season, that's gotta hurt, a new under 10's next season 8 new AFL womens teams in SE QLD next season - that's gotta hurt, there is already far more womens AFL teams than RL teams in SE QLD But hey NRLW has nothing to do with the success of AFLW or the AFL or the huge growth at grass roots level. etc etc etc ouch a rooney

You deny living in an afl fanboy bubble them write another post proving it. Quite humorous. Every post you have written here is about afl. This is an nrl thread. Proof is there for all to see. Its relentless afl fanboy propaganda on a thread about another sport. That makes you special!

Yet no one sees these girls playing AFL in NSW in these so called huge numbers. Auskick numbers make up most of AFL's rubbery participation figures. If you believe AFL figures then only 30 under 12 teams in Sydney play the sport? Hmmm The NRL would notice soccer participation figures in most of these areas because they actually exist.

So the screeching RL fan boys are saying i have a chip on my shoulder for daring to suggest that the NRL has fast tracked NRLW to combat its biggest competitor. To back up my argument i have produced stats showing the very real increase of girls playing CLUB Australian football in NSW in RL dominated areas and yet according to posters the NRL decided to fast track NRLW because 2 specific players wanted it and other girls played touch or tag football. - aha - OK then ! But i live in a bubble ?. You don't think the NRL noticed the huge increase of girls playing CLUB Australian football and is attempting to counter that ?.

There are already impressive numbers playing womens rugby league in those areas. To suggest most of these girls have taken up AFL because of AFLW, is fanciful cos they didn't watch it on TV going by ratings& they certainly wouldn't have been inspired given the turgid level of the AFLW, so its down to AFL money which has been a huge driver of growth just in the same way NRL's new TV deal will drive further growth for womens RL. Their comp now gives their players pathways. You have ignored current RL comps for females as though they don't exist. They existed before AFLW, will exist after it. The high level of womens RL & the skills evident by the Jillaroos necessitate a NRLW. All the womens comps in all the sports just highlight that rugby league is ready for that next step & 6 clubs is a nice cautious calculated start. I think you'll find women interested in contact sports in the Northern states will want to try multiple codes. Pity the choices in Victoria by the sounds.

Copying me now? Its the highest form of praise. And its nice and predictable that you are descending further into obvious heckling because lets face it thats all you ever intended. The grand old game of rugby league has survived bigger threats than a screeching afl fanboy with a chip on his shoulder and too much time on his hands.

You wanna discuss rugby league on a rugby league thread? Rugby league threads are not for that purpose. They exist to provide insecure afl fanboys a place to gloat vent pump out their chests and expel shrill noises about how their game is killing ours. Sad but true.

So according the RL fan boys on here. NRLW has nothing to do with being fast tracked because of its biggest competitor RL does not fear girls turning to grass roots AF in places like Newcastle, the North Coast, Sydney etc etc That's the biggest LOL i have heard in a while.
