Australia vs England: The Ashes cricket live scores, blog - 3rd Test, Day 1

By Scott Pryde / Expert

England will make a last-ditch attempt to stay in with a chance of retaining the Ashes when they travel to Perth for the third Test, which Australia enter as heavy favourites. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage of Day 1 from 1:30pm (AEDT).

The Aussies have dominated on the scoreboard, winning the first two Tests by ten wickets and 120 runs in Brisbane and Adelaide respectively, yet they haven’t dominated completely on the field.

Concentration lapses from the tourists have allowed the margins of victory to become as big as they were, but England have shown positive signs – just not enough of them to be competitive over five days.

The first couple of days in Adelaide saw the hosts well ahead, but a couple of big sessions for England – with James Anderson getting the ball to swing around under lights – put them back in the match before they capitulated on the final day, losing six wickets in the first session.

If England had won or even got close in Adelaide, the momentum would have been with them heading to Perth, but now they find themselves well and truly on the back foot.

The WACA is a venue they haven’t had much luck at, winning just one Test in 13 attempts. While the pitch has been flatter than normal in recent years, and reports suggest it’ll be the same this summer, it’s not an easy destination for touring teams.

England’s attack doesn’t stack up against the conditions either. While Anderson and Stuart Broad are proven, neither have had a great deal of fun in Australia and they won’t have a pink ball to help them out this time either.

The extra pace on offer from Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins could well prove to be the difference in this match, as well as the aggressive intent in the home side’s batting.

David Warner hasn’t been in the best of form, but he has scored centuries in Perth before and the feeling is that there could be another big one on the way here.

If that happens, England could be out of the match by the end of the first day.

Prediction
Despite what we have seen in the first two Tests, Perth is where the real difference between the sides will begin to show. England’s attack could well get plastered on the WACA, and while backing a draw is tempting, the raw pace of the Aussies and bounce for Nathan Lyon will get them over the line.

Australia to win and regain the Ashes.

You can't drop slips catches if you don't get edges!

Nothing surer at this stage I'd have thought, but hoping I am wrong. If the England batsmen are scoring this type of score on it, Australia could make 4-500 themselves, and that ordinarily would make a draw likely enough at any case.

Malan and Bairstow batted really well but the WACA pitch gave the bowlers little to work with. Lyon looked like he was bowling on a concrete footpath. Balls that would have given the left handers trouble in Brisbane and Adelaide were stroked through the covers. And the outfield is lightning fast. If you hit the ball with any timing and pierce the infield its 4. Starc looked dangerous at times with his full swinging deliveries and Cummins and Hazlewood tried to attack the batsmen but with no sideways movement its going to be hard for anyone to get an edge. I think the English bowlers will have just as much trouble getting wickets. Very early to call but if the batsmen keep their head you can only see big first innings for both teams which is going to ruin the match as a contest. We can only be thankful that it is the last test at the WACA as the centre square is beyond its use by date. Lets hope the new venue has a pitch that offers something to both batsmen and bowlers.

The funniest thing is the that the sandgropers dropped two sitters. Thank christ that they are at the top of their game. :)

If Australia was worried about bowling depth at the WACA I would have preffered Bird or young Richardson be selected ahead ahead of Mitchell Marsh at this point.

Good riddance to this ground. Another slow, flat road. I can't believe how much people talk the WACA up. It's been an ordinary wicket for 15 years. Given the weather predictions for Sunday and Monday, looks like we're heading for a draw.

Yeah. Absolutely fantastic from the pair Ronan. England were under plenty of pressure when they came together.

Quality stuff from Malan and Bairstow, particularly given that Australia's quicks bowled well today, apart from occasional flat spots.

Hi Rob, Not really. He bowled alright, but honestly, apart from the first over with the second new ball, no one looked like taking a wicket after about the 60th over.

STUMPS Half an edge to end the day from Bairstow as Cummins goes on a good length, just outside off stump. It goes straight to ground though and that will be stumps on Day 1 at the WACA. This has been a superb day for England. They were under the pump mid way through the second session, but then Jonny Bairstow and Dawid Malan came together and have bunted the Aussie attack on what has proven to be a road despite some added pace and bounce. Australia didn't do a heap wrong, but they dropped a few catches and will struggle to do anything other than wait for England to declare tomorrow. Malan is 110, Bairstow 75.

Great to see Smith role his arm over today. Did M.Marsh cause any problems during his spell Scott?

Bairstow plays and misses at a shorter one outside the off stump, then leaves one alone as it goes over the off stump. It was short enough, so with the consistent WACA bounce, probably a good leave.

MMarsh is only averaging in the 40s this season on this road? The WACA is flatter than the SSC at the moment. Sad way to see it go...

The line is just a little straighter this time from Cummins, in towards the off stump and it's defended towards point.
