Australia have done the double at the 2018 Sydney Sevens with both the women and men winning their respective titles, the women defeating New Zealand and the men defeating South Africa.
Australia’s men and women have some big matches ahead of them on the final day of the 2018 Sydney Sevens. Join The Roar for a live blog of all of Australia’s most crucial matches, starting from 12:12pm AEDT.
12:12pm AEDT – Men’s Cup quarter-final – Australia vs New Zealand
The Aussies finished on top of pool D after three wins in the pools stages, a great start to their tournament and it has put them in a good position.
That said, they’re on a very tough side of the finals draw, which is shown clearly by the strength of their opponent in New Zealand as their first matchup.
The Kiwis dominated both Russia and Samoa in their pools stage campaign, not conceding a point against either, but were narrowly beaten 19-17 by Fiji.
2:37pm AEDT – Womens’ Cup final – Australia vs New Zealand
By far the two strongest sides so far in the 2018 Women’s Sydney Sevens, Australia and New Zealand will meet to decide the title in the early afternoon.
Australia’s women have been as dominant as you could possibly ask for so far in this campaign – in five matches so far including their two finals, they’re yet to conceded a point.
Of course, New Zealand have been almost equally as impressive, they’ve dominated their opponents too, and this promises to be a titanic showdown.
5:58pm AEDT – Men’s Cup semi-final
If the Aussies are able to best New Zealand, then they’ll make it through to this semi-final and will be up against either Argentina or England. If Australia are in the match, we’ll have a live blog of it here.
8:48pm AEDT – Men’s Cup final
Should Australia go all the way to the final, they’ll find themselves here up against one of Fiji, USA, South Africa or Kenya. Regardless of who is in this match, we’ll have a live blog of it here.

Congratulations for the Aussies winning at home in the rugby 7’s. Seven aside rugby is truely suited to the women who play this form of rugby. Don’t complain because no one turns up to watch, you are not a household name as yet, but if you continue to play like you did in Sydney it won’t be long before the world will be shouting your names to a packed house.

i think the composition of the squad has been changing a lot , ever since they allowed the XV players in the Olympics. the thing with saffas is that they have a lot of caps, perhaps the most experienced team going around. even Fiji have a number of caps despite losing a few oldies. NZ lost a lot of caps with DJF and Stowers. i wonder what happened to some of the guys who were there last season like Ormond and Wakkaa .

Yep T/man, I'm wondering too, in regards to coach Laidlaw. The team this season has been up & down, like a yoyo. Even after winning the Cape tournament, their on field achievements, are not consistent, as with their playing against Fiji, in losing one, & later on winning one. They really are missing the likes of Stowers, Iaone Bros, & Ben Lam. Even Joe Webber, was also a big loss. I congratulate Australia on their weekend achievements, but let's see if they too, can develope some consistencies, especially the men's. As in the Series, which has now been going for over fifteen years, the Australian's have never won, a series title. Cheers.

Beastie, rugby does not dictate who plays which code. Moz slipped through the NRL net because of his size, but a few more kilos and inches might have seen him playing halfback for Souths, with nought that the ARU could do about it. This 7's tournament gives this jaded fan some hope for the code. Deep gratitude to both squads.

Well done to the Ozzies in Ozzie! Women's team were particularly impressive, zero points conceded all tournament - a first? And the men in the final, wow.

Today two great teams did us proud. Firstly the girls with their raw courage and extreme commitment. Setting up an inspiring standard for the boys, after dominating all comers to the tune of zero points against. Then the boys with similar pressure in defence and sensational coaching, tactics and execution. This is a fantastic start to the rugby year.

Well done to both mens and womens team for superb performances. Very impressed by the young mens team, real pace and running power against a very strong SA side who looked frightening before this game when they folded under the constant pressure. Well done to the captain, who has come back from injury. And well done Stannard.

The final coming up, our boys against the South Africans. Currently, Argentina are beating the USA pretty comfortably to take third place.
