Warriors wallop Rabbitohs in Perth

By Justin Chadwick / Wire

The Warriors have ended their Perth hoodoo in impressive fashion with a 32-20 win over South Sydney in Saturday’s NRL clash at Optus Stadium.

The Warriors entered the match having lost all nine of their previous matches in Perth.

But they made sure the first rugby league match at Perth’s new stadium was one to remember, running in six tries to four to secure the easy victory.

Former Manly five-eighth Blake Green starred in his debut for the Warriors, helping control the game and proving to be a perfect foil for halfback Shaun Johnson.

Star Rabbitohs veteran Greg Inglis failed to have his usual impact in his first NRL game since injuring his knee in last season’s corresponding round.

The Warriors were widely tipped to struggle this year, but they looked dangerous in attack and much fitter than the team who ended last season with nine-consecutive losses.

In contrast, Souths were out of sorts in attack and defence under new coach Anthony Seibold.

The Rabbitohs made a bright start to the match with the opening try to of Cody Walker.

But they were down 20-10 at halftime after two controversial decisions from the referees.

Firstly, the Rabbitohs were left seething in the 32nd minute when Warriors prop Sam Lisone was awarded a try on review despite an apparent obstruction.

The on-field referee initially disallowed the try, deeming Warriors forward Isaiah Papali’i had obstructed Adam Reynolds in the lead-up.

But the try was awarded on review after the video referee deemed Reynolds had already committed to tackling Papali’i, and wouldn’t have reached Lisone in any case.

And the Rabbitohs cried foul in the 38th minute when a try to Robert Jennings was disallowed because Walker’s pass was ruled forward.

Just over a minute later, the Warriors scored their fourth try after a brilliant run from Johnson opened the door for David Fusitu’a to cross with just eight seconds remaining in the half.

The Warriors opened the second half with tries to Ken Maumalo and Solome Kata, and it was effectively game over with the scoreboard reading 30-10.

Kata’s sin-binning in the 60th minute opened the door slightly for a Rabbitohs comeback, but Souths were only able to score one try with their numerical advantage.

A late conversion by Reynolds after Walker’s second try made him become just the third man in Rabbitohs history to pass 1000 points.

Bunny the TMO SHOWED VERY CLEARLY that the receiver had received the ball outside the shoulder of the player he was behind therefore showing Proof it was a try. Every team in the comp trys to slow down the oppositions play...so they should all have players in the bin in every match and as for the forward pass...well if League is too stupid to be able to look at forward passes on video then please blame the rule makers....In Union they get forward passes right pretty much all the time using TMO replays so why League cant is beyond belief

I have no problem sin binning a player deliberately infringing after repeated warnings or penalties, but this Kata sin binning was ridiculous. The player with the ball was continually moving forward into Kata rather than stopping and playing the ball after the held call. Kata had nowhere to go.The penalty should have gone the other way, for the South's player walking off the mark. But we know this is a rule that is completely ignored these days. Just another lucky dip sin binning rule to be applied every now and again this season.

Thanks TB. Actually wasn’t surprised with the loss. With 9 straight losses in Perth and I think 6 straight losses against the Bunnies the Warriors were at some stage going to come good. Had a feeling it was going to be this one. Thought your doggies were actually quite good against the storm. A little unlucky with that ball taken away by ado carr with 18 to go. A try there for you instead and you never know. Good luck for the coming weeks

Fair enough mate...your point is well made. I can understand the frustration but appreciate the objective way you’ve approached it.

Remember TB it went upstairs as a no try. There has to be definitive proof to overturn. When I was watching it live in full speed I was pretty confident the no try would be up held as for me the ball was in his fingers on the inside shoulder while his torso was behind the decoy runner. That still would be a few frames after he took control of the ball. The camera is to the right and if it was directly behind then the runner would in perspective look to be more directly behind the blocker. Yep Reynolds was going for the blocker but ball carrier cannot run behind a blocker. Didn’t cost us the game. We had plenty of chances to win it I think. Slackened off when we had the disallowed try before half time. Johnson and Gagai bombed one each and some soft defence. On field refs have a tough job to make decions on the run at the pace the game is. My frustrations are with the Bunker where they have time and technology and a clear set of directions. I do not believe that was definitive proof for them to overturn.

Yeah...Broncs were going to get the spoon according to more than a couple of pundits in 2015.

Yeah ok...maybe. The ball looks like it’s behind the player, the runner isn’t and that camera isn’t close to straight behind the play so not completely reliable It didn’t look like that at full speed or even on the replays which I think are more reliable than one not square still shot and Reynolds still made a bad read. Even if I concede, it’s a matter of cms a not close to a howler. Agree about the sing bin and hopefully we see it consistently applied.

Yeah, round 1 scorelines mean nothing. In 2015 both grand finalists got flogged by 24+ in their first game

I don’t think the sin bin was just for the three penalties in a row. In the first half they were given a warning on the run I think for about four ruck infringements . The Warriors were intent on slowing the ruck down all game so I think that was the last straw As for the obstruction you state at no time did the play go behind the decoy runner. Here is a still of the play https://mobile.twitter.com/NRLBunker/status/972392007720083456 As you can see the ball is held directly behind the decoy runner. A clear obstruction as the ball has to be caught on the outside shoulder. Still the Warriors looked the better team and deserved their win. We looked good for a little while but in the end the better side won. The Burgess twins looked good so hopefully they can keep it up Not sure if is the fact the Warriors are fitter or the new 5/8 took the pressure off Johnson or both but things look like they are on the up for our brothers across the ditch.

Lets get this straight, the SB was appropriate, the Warriors were trying to slow the play the ball down (the whole game) they were laying on tackled players and they were warned continually, that was the reason for the SB. The obstruction ruling, was also a contentious decision and was touch and go, it was bad luck for Reno and Souths. The forward pass (that was a try) was once again a stuff up by the refs and this will be a thing that fans will have to cop all season. The bottom line is, that Souths were not good enough to win this game and Souths will have improve in many areas if they are going to make the 8. i won't have a go as yet but, i hope that things don't pan out and are the same as 2017 and 2016!

I liked the sin binning too but also have concerns about the consistency. It was for three penalties in a row. The obstruction wasn’t an obstruction and was a great call by the bunker. At no time did the play go behind the decoy runner and Reynolds absolutely chose to take the inside runner. No one was prevented making a tackle. Didn’t see all of it but it seemed like a more intense, up tempo Warriors? My big criticism of them last year was that they were too one out and flat footed and too often left their playmakers with no one running off them.

The Kata sinbin was a shocker.....Different if it was a break and the Souths player was trying to play the ball quick because of a try scoring opportunity like the the Tigers player in their game, but this was on the line with all Warriors players behind the ball. I bet we never see that sin bin again this season but if they are consistant then we will see a sin bin every game and sometimes 5 or 6 a game. It needs to be 5 not 10 anyway but wasnt their a sin bin in the Newcastle game as well??? 3 in the weekend is massive, lets hope they are consistant.....but that will be asking way too much

Both passes in the video highlights where Munster goes thru ( in the Storm game) are more forward than the disallowed Souths try. Once again we have the situation where a ref who isn't in a great position and probably hasn't got a clear view due to a player being in his line of vision having to rule on the direction of a pass. Unfortunately and understandably they get it wrong on a regular basis. The bunker and everyone watching the replay can see the pass isn't forward but why are we still pretending that this isn't accurate enough but the ref is? It looks like the ref blows the forward pass straight away but why not ask the touchie who was in line with it, there is no way he could call that forward. If they believe that is forward why aren't they blowing the whistle all the time for other similar passes? This is one area of the game where the wrong call is made a lot of the time.

Liked the Kata sin binning. Hopefully not an opening week wonder but continues on. Don’t like the play the ball penalties. They will be never be consistent and the sh will hit the fan when the first try is disallowed because the player missed playing the ball with his foot by 2mm.

I don't really think the Rabbits had that much to complain about in the refereeing stakes - the Lisone try was as close as they come and while yes, the pass didn't look forward, the penalty count was 10-3 at one stage, only leveling up somewhat with the usual backside-saving exercise by the refs once the game was effectively over. Hopefully the Kata sin bin is the standard now too, and not the exception as it has been historically in the NRL. Doubt it though.
