Jaguares' early dominance too much for Tahs

By Alan / Roar Guru

In a high scoring contest, the Jaguares have earned a vital 10-point victory over the Waratahs – a win set up by a blistering opening 20 minutes from the hosts.

The Waratahs in turn though denied the Jaguares a bonus point and that will annoy the Argentine club.

Stung by criticism from former Argentine great Hugo Porta that they were a team with no soul, the Jaguares recorded their first win in four matches, ending their worst start since joining the competition in 2016.

It means the Waratahs, with one, last-gasp, win over the Stormers, a draw against the Sharks and now a loss, are already nine points adrift of Australian conference leaders the Rebels, who they meet in Sydney next Sunday afternoon.

The Jaguares were in scintillating attacking form from the start and winger Emiliano Boffelli had two tries on the board inside 11 minutes, the first from the kickoff, as they carved out a 33-7 halftime lead.

Fullback Joaquin Tuculet cut through the Waratahs’ defence for their third after 16 minutes and flyhalf Nicolas Sanchez touched down again four minutes later to round off a fine team attack.

The Australians finally pierced the home defence after 35 minutes when number eight Jed Holloway picked up from a ruck and scored under the posts.

The Waratahs looked to reduce the deficit before the interval but wing Bautista Delguy intercepted flyhalf Bernard Foley’s pass and raced away for the Jaguares’ fifth try, with Sanchez kicking his fourth conversion.

The Waratahs emerged from the break intent on taking the game to the hosts and scored their second try in the 47th minute when Jake Gordon gave Curtis Rona a high pass over the defence and the wing went over with Foley converting.

The Jaguares got their sixth try with Tuculet feeding centre Matias Orlando wide on the left after a series of scrums close to the Waratahs line.

The visitors finished with a flourish with two more tries either side of the hooter from replacement Nick Palmer and fullback Israel Folau, who chased a kick from deep in the Waratahs half and beat Tuculet to touch down.

Foley then took his tally to four conversions.

Overall, the Jaguares are on the board in season 2018 and have three straight home matches to look forward in a bid to build some real momentum.

Despite a strong finish, the Waratahs crumbled in the opening half, conceding five tries in an opening that cost them the match.

Back to the drawing board for the Tahs. The Jaguares have finally notched a win and are on the prowl for more wins at home.

Jaguares 38
Waratahs 28

Tah fans only panic* in super rugby season. The Waratah players don't as they know they will be gifted Gold jerseys even when they have hopeless seasons ..... .Look at Bernard Foley in Gold for 4 seasons, i`ve lost count the amount of times he`s been charged down for tries or passed intercepts for tries missed easy kicks that lose games and hundreds of missed tackles and he is still always first picked for the Wallabies. .Don`t Panic Tah Tragics ,you`ll be SCHWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET !!!!!!....

Genia is playing brilliantly but I think you will find Folau and the backs will smash the Rebels, the forwards will hold on

Manly Marlin junior. Foketi had a brief stint with Bayonne and was more recently with Bay of Plenty. He isn't showing much in attack or defence. I'd like to see Rona given a go at 13, although that defensive mix up on the weekend was worrying from both him and Foketi. 9 Gordon 10 Foley 11 Naiyaravoro 12 Beale 13 Rona 14 Newsome/Kellaway/Clark - take your pick 15 Folau Has to be worth a look. The defence can't get any worse and I think we need a more direct runner at 13 and need Taqele's ability to generate go forward given the lightweight carrying ability in the pack. I'd also overhaul the pack to be: 1 Johnson-Holmes 2 Latu 3. Kepu 4. Hanigan 5. Simmons 6. Wells 7. Hooper 8. Holloway and get Vui back on to the bench. Hate that locking pair as they are not complimentary but there is just no bruiser anywhere in the squad - they need to be hunting for someone as their stocks in this department are so sub par.

Thankx Jez. Lesson learned that do not comment on a game until I have watched the whole game on tv. I was just going by the video clip in this article titled "Waratahs concede 4 tries in opening 20 minutes" and then it only shows two tries being scored. And yes K.Beale did play and he and L.Foketi were the culprits watching the Jags player (the #11??) sail between them untouched. In the next try C.Rona and L.Foketi mashed up defending an overlap. Both tries really look terrible. Curtis Rona played OC for the Force last year and did a really good job. In fact it got him into the WB side, albeit on the wing. The Tahs bought him, presumably as an OC and promptly put him on the left wing with Lalakai Foketi at OC. Where did L.Foketi hail from? All I know is he is an ex-Rebels player and did play Aust U20 in 2013. He must have trained really fabulous to beat C.Rona for that OC spot.

Michael Chieka loves those two project players..They will be in the Wallaby 23 for the June Test series. No Risk.As will other poor performers Foley Beale Kepu Simmons Hooper and " Israel non tackling "Folau .. If Phipps comes good from injury he will be in as well..Rona will make the 23 as will Holloway ..

Timbo that's nonsense from Anthony French and the RA. The Brumbies made a profit last year and would have made a profit the previous year if it wasn't for the behaviour of previous CEO Michael Jones. The Brumbies also achieve high ratings compared to the rest.

not true, forcefan's ruck stats over a number of years show Hooper is involved in as many rucks as any no 7. He has a high work rate in ball carries and tackles. Why are his numbers in attack, defence and rucks higher than any backs or forwards if he is lazy?

I haven't watched the video you are watching but the first try you describe there is the second try of the game. That is Lalakai Foketi in the 13 - that try between him and Rona is first phase ball off a lineout. Just shocking defence from the pair of them.

Little point in trying to analyse the Tahs. The real issue is the roster. Player recruitment has been woeful.

he is the weakest link in an otherwise strong team. But we are lacking No 10s in Australia so not sure if there is a better option at present.

You're right Peter, my mistake for looking at videos before my wake-up coffee and shower. I guess I saw the Tahs #13 and thought it was Izzy (a big islander). On a second look at the video, for the 1st try its the #12 and #13 who watch the Jaguares player zoom through. In the 2nd try, it looks more of terrible communication between #13 and Curtis Rona trying to shut down an overlap of 3 Jags to 2 Tahs. Incidentally did K.Beale play because on the video above of the 1st try, the bloke with #12 jumper just does not look like Beale.

Brumbies Rebels and Force are/were all struggling financially and have similarly low crowd and viewer numbers. Force won the same number of Games (Yes Bonus points are important). and did a lot with a list of nobody's. At no point did I think the brumbies should have gone but without the conference wins up their sleeve it could have been a very different conversation.

They did the exercise last year, it was a pretty long list, Sure, a number of guys at the end of their careers and some new guys looking for a start but there are at least 34 guys you could start a decent SR team with. Heck, we lost 34 Guys last year - Brumbies back row, Half the Rebels, Some Reds.

The auto-pick and ignorance of SR performance has got to be one of the dumbest concepts ever. There are a Dozen things wrong with this attitude and is one of the underlying problems behind the Tahs and Wallabies lack of success and the leakage of talent overseas. If you only have to perform at international level and only phone it in at SR level, what value do you have to your team. Not a million Bucks, that is for sure. Stop drinking Cheika's Kool Aide. Compare the candidates, evaluate them in all aspects of the role, be honest about it without meddling with statistics like: 100% success of 1 tackle attempted.where players around him are making 10 with lower completion rates. It is a sign he isn't pulling his weight, not that he is a good defender.

In the highlights pack alone I saw 3 Argentinians blow straight by him. With a "Not my job" look on his face. Can't miss tackles you don't attempt.
