As the ball tampering scandal rages on, let's all take a deep breath

The collective outrage that is pouring from Australia onto our Australian cricket team is extraordinary.

Every TV, radio and press commentator is looking for a new adjective to encapsulate the mood of the Australian public. Trevor Chappell wrote yesterday morning that “I’m no longer the most hated man in Australian cricket”.

In terms of the hype, this story is up there with a bushfire that wipes out a town, a terrorist act that kills dozens of innocent people, or knowing that 50,000 Facebook accounts have been hacked. Or is it? Are we just feigning outrage and indignation?

Yes, the Australian cricket team cheated. It was premeditated. They got caught. It was clumsy and stupid. In the coming hours, days and weeks, heads will roll on this – there’s no doubt.

I suspect Lehmann will go, Smith won’t ever captain Australia again, nor will Warner be the vice-captain. If the media (and social media) has anything to do with it, then this day will be remembered for decades to come.

The incident the other day, in isolation, is not that big a deal. The problem is, we've ( or our cricketers) have put the players up on pedestals. We haven't fully acknowledged that all of the issues, poor behaviour, etc is symptomatic of a bigger problem - the cricket that's being played is often way outside the spirit of the game - and this issue needs to be fixed. You've suggested changes, eg Lehmann going, but we need something to get our guys to lull their heads in, focus on cricket and leave the sledging and antics to someone else. That's where CA will need to provide strong leadership over the coming weeks and months

So that's how Australia beat New Zealand in the recent one day series. Must review the film of those games to look for the damning evidence. Smith wasn't the captain though was he? So that only leaves Davy Whatchamacallit. Incidentally what happened in that last South African Test match? Did they ever finish it? And who won? Morally or ethically? Can't remember any news coverage of that match.
