Sydney Roosters vs South Sydney Rabbitohs: NRL live scores, blog

By Riley Pettigrew / Roar Guru

Can the Sydney Roosters win their second game in a row or will the South Sydney Rabbitohs bounce back when the greatest rivalry in rugby league resumes? Join The Roar from 7:50pm (AEST) for live coverage.

The history between Eastern Suburbs and South Sydney stretches all the way back to the foundation of the New South Wales Rugby League in 1908 and there will be no love lost nearly 110 years after their first meeting.

The Roosters are on a high following their last-start win over the Cronulla Sharks, cruising to an impressive 28-10 victory off the back of some great leadership from Cooper Cronk.

There are still concerns with their forward pack however, as they struggle to lay the platform for their halves and are continually dominated by larger opposition. This week will be a tough task against a physical Souths outfit, featuring the likes of Angus Crichton and the Burgess twins. However, the Roosters’ form suggests they can buck the trend.

The Bunnies came dangerously close to ending the St George Illawarra Dragons’ unbeaten run off the back of some dummy-half heroics from Damien Cook, but they couldn’t quite deliver in the end, going down 16-12 at Kogarah.

There’s a lack of creativity in Redfern and a 2-3 record after five rounds of competition points to inconsistency. The club are still without Sam Burgess, currently serving a two-game suspension, and will need Adam Reynolds to lift at halfback.

Souths have got history behind them though, with 112 wins to the Roosters’ 99 – with five matches drawn – in their 216 games played.

Prediction
The Sydney Roosters will extend their three-match winning streak against the cardinal and myrtle.

Roosters by 4.

@ 3 Teef 3 Teef, sometimes big brother lets little brother win for a tease. Now go back to revelling in your Penfolds flagon. I'll wallow in my latte.

'3_Hats SSTID 2014' gee your selling our Rabbits short! I predicted at least top 6 and even top 4 lol But, the way that they are going they most certainly are looking good to make the 8. There still allot of improvement and silly errors that have to be stamped out. Hopefully they will streamline all that out and Souths will be the 'Old 2014' side and even better! Looks promising (in the last 2 weeks) with the twins going really well this year and Sam Burgess, Cam Murray, Zane Musgrove, Tyrell Fuimaono still out and GI, Gagai, Sutton and Clark chiming into this side and improving with each game. Looking good for the future.

Sure it is way too early at this stage for any predictions. But... I wrote in the Pre-season that my Rabbitohs could very well challenge for the Top 8 as I was confident with the young Junior Rep Players that we have assembled and I was extremely confident that our Marquee Rep Players would eventually find their form. We all know what they are truly are capable of. Any team with the likes of GI, Sam, Tom, George, Gagai, Reyno, Cook, AJ, Walker, Little John should never ever be taken lightly! Yet, I was laughed at... Who is laughing now? Still early, very true but the Rabbitohs are only just getting started. So much improvement in us it is frightening what we are going to do to those other clubs. Raiders, Broncos, Knights, you are next. Well so far with close losses to the Warriors, Panthers and the Dragons who coincidently all are in the Top 4 at the moment and are all in top form. We Smashed Manly and a had good solid win against the Doggies who played pretty good against us. We accounted for the so-called premiership favourites the Scum with ease, we just tore them a new A.... Carved them up the middle and bashed them into submission. YES, Souths do look like a team destined for the Finals ALL that despite us having 4 of our TOP 17 players out! Sam Burgess, Cam Murray, Zane Musgrove, Tyrell Fuimaono, ALL were out! The Future is looking so bright we will have to be wearing our shades! LMFAO at you doubters! Plenty more to come so watch out! .

A poor effort from the SCUM, Really? OR were the Rabbitohs just too bloody good despite us having 4 of our TOP 17 out! Sam Burgess, Cam Murray, Zane Musgrove, Tyrell Fuimaono, ALL were out!

Mate, you got to 'hang on to that pill. If you leave yourself venerable then that is what happens. It happens every week and in every game, you can't use that excuse for the Roosters loss as the Bunnies were sensational and the Roosters 'Had No Chance' the Rabbits were better all night. The score should have been Souths 44 Roosters 14.

A really poor effort from Easts. The ease with which line breaks were made, zero chase when the ball went behind the Bunnie's tryline. No heart tonight. JWH arm grabbing, no, cuddling in defence and his tip toe through the tulips when taking the ball up has been symptomatic of his play for about 4 years now. Napa is just as bad. He's been pretty useless for years as well. Friend made some mistakes, but you can never accuse him of dogging it. He tried, like he always does. Best tonight were Radley, Latrell and Keary. Ferguson....he did some ok things, but gee he did some dumb, dumb, dumb things. Very very disappointing effort tonight.

Yeh, that was a shocker and the last Roosters try by Matterson, he was offside and in front of Cronk. There are some bad decisions being made by referees and some are game changers. That is the frustrating thing about the NRL.

Roosters have a major forwards problem. Cronk a genius 1 week, a crock the next. How much did they pay for Teddy? es? Hilarious. No one really knows but not worth more than $400k a year. Premierships favorites? Hilarious.

The mighty Rabbits, there was no doubt in this game! This the start for better things, were just started and won't be stopped. The Burgy twins 'sensational', I've been very impressed with the twins this year! Cooky, Reno, Walker, Crichton and even Clark were outstanding, all the boys are firing and this is only the start of 2018, I'm very impressed with how the boys are progressing this year. Go the Bunnies!!!

It's was not working at all for the Roosters. Terrible loss. Napa improved in the second half - maybe up to 5. Mitchell was the only dangerous one, but the one-out forward runs are killing them. So predictable and boring play.

Bit rough on Fergo....thought he was great running the ball back and his error was really a strip by GI.

Been saying that since the start. So disappointed in Sharks and Dogs for not running over the Roosters. Both those teams had better packs and should have won. Any team with a decent pack should handle Easts. Has anyone got an analysis of their tries this year to see how many are off kicks??

That concludes The Roar’s coverage of Sydney Roosters vs South Sydney Rabbitohs. There is plenty more sporting action all over The Roar this weekend with the NRL, AFL, Super Rugby, A-League and Commonwealth Games. I'll be back on Sunday 4pm (AEST) for another historic rivalry as the Manly Sea Eagles host the Wests Tigers. Thanks for following along.

Souths on top for the entire game. Cook getting them on the front foot all night. Roosters couldn’t contain the roll. Plus looked inept in attack. Good win for the Rabbits. In unrelated news just saw that Matt Gillett is out for 3mths. That’s huge!
