FFA confirms VAR got it wrong

By Emma Kemp / Roar Guru

A “technical failure” with the video assistant referee (VAR) stopped the controversial technology from disallowing the goal that decided Saturday night’s A-League grand final.

A review by Football Federation Australia has found the VAR on duty, Craig Zetter, did not have access to the camera angles required to catch a blatant offside in the process of Kosta Barbarouses’s ninth-minute goal that gave Melbourne Victory their 1-0 win over Newcastle to claim the championship.

Social media went into meltdown when replays showed James Donachie had drifted the wrong side of the last Jets player, with Johnny Warren medallist Adrian Mierzejewski and former Perth Glory coach Kenny Lowe leading the outrage.

A-League chief Greg O’Rourke issued a statement on Sunday morning to reveal Hawkeye had a “malfunction of software” that meant the VAR system was partially lost 30 seconds before Victory’s goal.

It was not restored until “some minutes” after the goal at which point O’Rourke said it was too late to overturn the goal.

“We are extremely disappointed at this failure of the VAR technology and we understand the disappointment and frustration of the Newcastle Jets, their fans and indeed all football fans,” O’Rourke said.

“VAR was introduced here and in other parts of the world as a technology based solution to correct the human errors that inevitably are made from time to time when officials are making judgments in split seconds.

“On this occasion the technology itself failed and the broadcast angles required were unavailable.

“We are working with Hawkeye to thoroughly understand why it did and what can be done to prevent this happening again.

“Whilst we understand that this happened only once this season it was at a most critical time.

“All parties desire the technology to be failure proof and that is what we will be striving for.”

After the match Jets coach Ernie Merrick made it clear he didn’t agree with the decision that stood.

“It looked to me like there were three players offside,” he said.

“I don’t want to be a sore loser but if that goal was offside I just wonder what the point of the VAR is.”

Total bloody cobblers. In any broadcast situation, you'd have a " live feed " monitor...and that wouldn't be affected by this ridiculous software. I like the VAR technology in football. In cricket, it's a joke. How the software can monitor the ever changing conditions of the pitch in " real time ' ? Really. Crap it can.

Funnily in the Champions league & other leagues without VAR, after some dodgy decisions, they cannot wait for VAR to be implemented. This was clearly offside & not allowed, VAR should only pick up clear errors, not make a judgement call.

That's an absurd comparison Pip. You picked the lowest number and divide it by the highest number you can think of. What about the millions round the world who watched it.

It's only half of last year if we are comparing to the penalty shoot-out, which had separate ratings to the main game, that's not really a fair comparison.

yeah but no mention that ONE viewers were half of last years total. so the peaks were great but do networks measure rights values based on peaks? have we been tracking averages for no reason?? The total average for this years GF was less than 400k, half of last years 600k+

This just proves there is something seriously wrong in Australian sport. It started with he NRL, now it's migrated to the A League. Even without VAR the linesman should have seen it was offside, no excuses. The same problem as in NRL, the refs either don't need to go to the bunker but do and then the bunker make a completely wrong decision, ie the Valentine Holmes try in origin last year, numerous cameras but only 1 camera angle was checked. Now the VAR has a glitch. Incompetence? Let's hope that's the reason.

Greg O'Rourke couldn't have been happier with the result. "Saturday evening's Hyundai A-League 2018 Grand Final was the most watched Hyundai A-League match ever on Fox Sports following the release of preliminary broadcast figures overnight. With an average of 367,000 viewers, and a peak of 553,000, this number was a 10% increase on the previous highest Hyundai A-League match, the Hyundai A-League 2017 extra time and penalties Hyundai A-League Grand Final between Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory FC . In addition, the Hyundai A-League 2018 Grand Final and post-game were the two most watched subscription TV programs of the day, nearly double the nearest rival. "On top of a sold-out match, the broadcast numbers for the Hyundai A-League 2018 Grand Final were truly outstanding," said Football Federation Australia (FFA) CEO David Gallop. We also estimate that up to 20 million football fans around the world tuned in at some time to watch it on TV or streamed online with our global broadcast partners.""

Now the ffa have openly admitted it was the wrong call and technology that was specifically there to stop exactly these type of calls just happened to be offline just when the 'goal' was scored leaves only one option open now and that is a replay. Regardless of whether the rules on VAR allow a replay or not, because of the time the system was down it looks really really bad and if the ffa don' t offer to annul the result and replay the game it looks like there was cheating involved and tge league is compromised. Victory if they were honorable would be offering a replay based on the latest information by the ffa

Go punch someone when they're not looking. That's what I want to watch on the sports field. Cowards punching when the opponent is not expecting to be punched.

The fallout from the offside goal that won Victory the Grand Final continues. “Sportsbet has tweeted and emailed punters saying it has refunded over $130,000 with bonus bets for those who backed Newcastle or the draw in Saturday night's game” calling it a Justice refund. Is there any one still in denial that this goal was offside and that in the single biggest occasion in domestic football the officials weren’t good enough, the VAR wasn’t good enough, and now the ffa aren’t good enough??

Of course what's lost in this is the Linesman didn't see it either Aaaand this is why I don't like the VAR anywhere, it's a bit like the "interfering with play" debate when they changed the offside rule, where people clearly in the zone of play who are a visual distraction who have the ball go through their legs are deemed to not be interfering if not actively moving towards the ball In this case whereas people would just get irritated at the "incompetence" of the ref and let it go (eventually lol) there will be questions as to where the lines are drawn, eg if there is an obscure foul up the park two minutes before a goal that was "missed" by the referee will that be brought into it as a "clear and obvious error"? Case in point is the recent UCL Semi between Liverpool and Roma,, if Liverpool get a man sent off early in second half for having his arm prevent a goal on the line (Intentional or not) and Roma score from the penalty spot it is game on as they can really go for the two more goals needed in 30 mins with a one man advantage If VAR does not then this expands from criticising the referee to a broader criticism of Roma complaining about a systemic conspiracy against Italian teams and goes on for longer and becomes very divisive In this case the whole thing is being used to create a large cloud over the trophy which doesen't help in terms of the cloud over the game more generally. Imagine the type of cloud that can cover a World Cup, eg if VAR failed to rule out Maradona's "hand of god" somehow, the controversy would be so much bigger Yeah sure, MV were on the beneficial side this time, as were Liverpool, but there will be times when we won't be As for the game overall MV did perfectly well on the night tactically and executed the game plan to take the heat out of the Jets and nearly get a second (hitting the post etc) to seal off the victory, in a sense the real GF was last week in Sydney just as the real FA Cup final happens at the Semi stage often etc and after coming from behind in previous two finals clashes and managed to pick themselves up mentally/emotionally and winning 3 games in a row its hard to begrudge MV of the trophy achievement...but many will

Exactly. Precisely the reason why I won’t be getting a membership next season. The VAR has destroyed football. I have four CCM friends who haven’t set foot inside a stadium or watch a game since that debacle again Adelaide. The other reason is some genius at the FFA decide to schedule games at 7:00 on Sunday night. And before anyone mentions this was for tv crowds, how has that worked out?

Knew somewhere 2012 would be brought up. The difference being this goal was supposed to be reviewed with technology for this exact purpose. In 2012 the VAR didn't exist, and you can't say that decision would be reversed just because Berisha over celebrated after the penalty was given. Miller actually connected with Berisha. I recall an Adelaide player being incorrectly red carded early in a Grand Final against Victory also.

lol, Mr Guru, Victory were not the better side. As if that matters even if they were. You must have missed the first half where the Jets were all over Victory.

The one aspec of this that doesn’t make sense to me is that as soon as the ball had gone in, we saw the scoreboard light up with VAR review. I was on halfway immediately behind where the free kick was taken and the 4th official would have had an excellent view of it too. I confidently predicted that VAR would go red as we could see one or two players offsideats the kick was struck. The green light came on and we were somewhat stunned. So what was reviewed? Did they just pretend? It is a pity that there is no other assistance that can be given. As I said previously, the 4th official must have seen it as he was there in a good position but that isn’t part of his job. At the end of the game a guy sitting next to me asked David Gallup if it was offside (he was walking down the tunnel for the presentation. He frowned and said “yes” so everyone knew. I have been against using VAR as I never believed it would really help the game, purely deflect blame and responsibility for decision making from man to machine. Since the AR missed it, there would have been some fans calling him plenty of names and some of us that recognise how difficult it is would be saying “well that’s sport” but instead we get a very different discussion. 90 minutes though of sitting less than 20 metres behind Mr Muscat reminds me of all the things you should not teach young people to do when involved in sport. It serves as a reminder of what is bad on the coaching side and what needs addressing and it reminds me that sportsmanship is only alive in places that have a different set of values to him. I cannot begin to think what must go through the heads of persons appointed as 4th officials at games where he is present.

Hah ! Why don't you roll out Dave the Cameraman from the 'can't bowl, can't throw' scandal? I have a trainee puppy guide dog at home and even it started barking at the TV from coverage showing Donkey was offside, along with his team mates. All the VAR ref need do was to look at the Free To Air coverage to see the offence. Not like it was hard to spot. Technical issues my backside. Another own goal from the FFA - they would have been better off keeping quiet and it would have entered the history of the game with the 'hand of god' and other stuff ups.
