Egypt vs Uruguay: 2018 FIFA World Cup highlights, scores, blog

By Scott Pryde / Expert

Match result:

Uruguay have pulled their opening 2018 FIFA World Cup match out of the fire, scoring a late goal to sink a brave Egypt.

Without their best player in Mo Salah, Egypt were solid from the start of the match and if anything, had the better of the opporutnities in the first half. They looked the more dangerous of the two sides, but simply couldn’t capitalise.

The trend slowly wore off in the second half as the superior fitness of Urugay paid off, Jose Gimenez eventually making their chances count, heading home a free kick in the 89th minute.

Uruguay were able to hang onto their slender lead and take the three points, but it didn’t come as easily as they would have wanted, with the pressure now on Egypt to beat Russia and Saudi Arabia in a bid to quality out of Group A.

Final score
Egypt 0
Uruguay 1

Group A is the weakest at the World Cup, but Uruguay are a team who have the power to progress a long way through the tournament. It would come as a major shock if they didn’t top the group and top it easily.

Whether Egypt are even able to compete in this match comes down to whether gun Liverpool striker Mo Salah, who was undoubtedly the best player on the planet in the last 12 months, is fit.

He injured his shoulder in a messy tackle from Spain captain Sergio Ramos during the UEFA Champions League final against Real Madrid and has been in a race against the clock ever since to prove his fitness for their opener against Uruguay.

Still, Egyptian coach Hector Cuper can’t only rely on Salah, who will provide plenty at the front, but won’t be able to do much in the way of stopping Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani at the back.

Uruguay’s only played one lead-up match before the World Cup, smacking Uzbekistan 3-0 in a dominant performance. Stretching back to March though, they beat Wales and the Czech Republic quite convincingly, following a strong qualification campaign.

The South American nation’s attack will be their strongest asset, with the side finishing second behind Brazil in qualification and scoring an average of nearly two goals per game for the entirety of the last qualification stage.

If Suarez and Cavani are put into space by their midfield in this game, they could run riot against an Egyptian defence, who lost 3-0 to Belgium and only managed a draw with Kuwait in the lead-up to the Cup.

No one outside of Salah in the Pharoah’s squad has scored more than ten international goals, so it’s hard to see where their production will come from, with the game likely to be played at the other end of the pitch either way.

Prediction
Uruguay are going to win this match, make no mistake. The only question really is what the margin of victory will be. They will probably get at least three on the board and maybe more. If Salah plays, then there is half a chance Egypt will score one themselves, but it’s hard to see that happening.

Uruguay 4 – Egypt 0.

Well, I'll apologise again for the quality of the blog. It was down the toilet and I pride myself on giving high-quality coverage, so I'm not over the moon as you could well imagine, but unfortunately when a certain internet provider's stream feels like it's right out of the 1980s, there is very little that could be done about it. However, I hope you enjoyed the coverage of this 2018 FIFA World Cup match right here on The Roar and I thank you for tuning in. Hopefully the 1am (AEST) game between Morocco and Iran has more luck than this one. It'll be Karlo Tychsen to take you through that one. I'll be back on Sunday for Costa Rica and Serbia. Bye for now.

A bit of a shame for Egypt who did all they could and probably did better than I expected. Those last minute goals would be crushing to concede. Would have been interesting to see what Salah could have done once the game opened up.

Well, on that form the Egyptians should comfortably beat the Saudis. The Russia match suddenly turns into one of the most intriguing early clashes, though...

Also - that British commentator who was narrating the game was very good. Anybody know who that was?

Good game, from the parts I saw. Egypt were always genuine underdogs I guess, and they certainly were brave. Thanks so very much for the blog, Scott.

FULLTIME And that's the end in Ekaterinburg! Uruguay have pulled off the great escape to take victory with an 89th minute goal to defender Jose Gimenez! Egypt slump to the ground, exhausted after a brave effort without their best player, but the mountain of 90 minutes proved one step too far to climb for the Pharaohs. Egypt 0 Uruguay 1

Yeah, they've been brave, but Uruguay have been better. A lot of new Egypt fans though. Still a very good chance to qualify if they can get over the Russians in their next showing.

90 + 5' - Egypt pushing men forward here and they had two or three balls pushed into the penalty area, but it came to nothing. Suarez taken out after the clearance and there is a card. YELLOW CARD - Ahmed Hegazi (Egypt) Egypt 0 Uruguay 1

90 + 4' - Trezeguet is back on the field but hobbling around and looking awful. Uruguay pushed forward, turned it over and then Egypt went long. Morsy controlling outside the penalty area and then shifting it across to the right-hand side before a cross goes into the box. Gimenez with a great clearing header though. Egypt 0 Uruguay 1

They've run out of gas with 10 to go. Uruguay have dominated the last 10 minutes. Feel bad for Egypt - especially since their best player can't play.

90 + 3' - Trezeguet has gone off injured. Egypt will be down to ten men with no subs left for the time being. Egypt 0 Uruguay 1

This would have been interesting with Salah on the field.

90 + 2' - The Egyptians push forward, but it's a rushed through ball which travels all the way down to Muslera. They are going to struggle to put one through in the next three minutes. Uruguay will just continually filter men back from here on out. Egypt 0 Uruguay 1

When it is 0-0, 89th minute, and you are defending a corner with every man back - please, please, please put defenders on the posts.
