The Adelaide Crows host the Geelong Cats at the Adelaide Oval with both teams desperately requiring a win. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:50pm (AEST).
The Crows have one final chance to stake a claim for a spot in the top eight come season’s end and this is it.
With three losses from their last four and a season that has gone from disrupted to disastrous, Adelaide cannot afford to slip three wins away from the top eight – which seems likely considering the match-ups thrown up this weekend.
Last week’s loss to Richmond confirmed where the Crows are at, despite an impressive win against the Eagles a week earlier. The return of Eddie Betts is a big inclusion for the home side.
Geelong are walking a tightrope at the moment. They border somewhere between real top-four contenders and also-rans who could still miss the finals, depending upon to whom you speak. Last week’s win against Sydney was a shot in the arm for Chris Scott’s men and they welcome back Daniel Menzel to the team for this clash.
While the Cats could potentially afford a loss or two on the way home, the reality is that they will still have top-four aspirations and currently sit two wins from that position. If they are to get there, this is a must-win game and one that could even see them tumble out of the eight come the end of the weekend if other results go against them.
Prediction
There is a lot on the line for Geelong and, despite being on the road in a hostile environment, their excellent defensive capabilities should enable them to grapple their way past the Crows in a low-scoring encounter.
Geelong by three goals.

It was a dive worthy of Alex Rance. There is a reason Selwood is number three in the competition for frees received.

There are some slow-motions of Duckwood from a couple of angles and he goes down like Naymar. There is minimal contact and he milks it for all it is worth.

You can't be serious Barb, Selwood punched Knight in the gut so Gibbs just give him a little bump. Selwood initiated the whole thing, surprised he didn't get a free kick out of it.

You should have a look at footage from side on. Selwood drives himself into Gibbs and does a nice little flop hoping for a free. And do you think he’ll be cited for his deliberate trip on Milera?

Selwood is also number three in frees received in the entire competition. Dangerfield number 5.

Gibbs is a coward for his off the ball hit on Selwood and those that have said he was staging have egg all over their faces. Selwood is one of the toughest guys in football unlike Gibbs!

Adelaide Crows were very inspirational in the way they fought the rort of the Geelong Cats by coming out convincing winners by 15 points to keep their final chances alive, which as an avid supporter would love to see my beloved Adelaide Crows continue the fight they had tonight in challenging the other finals contenders in similar circumstances and show them we are in the fight for the flag #WEFLYASONE

The Adelaide Crows have beaten the Geelong Cats by 15 points in Adelaide to keep any slim hopes of a finals berth alive in 2018. It was a thrilling and high scoring encounter which was somewhat unusual considering Geelong's excellent defensive record throughout the season and Adelaide's failure to put big totals on the board during their mid season slump. That slump put them in a position where a loss tonight may well have killed of any remote chance they had of finals football yet still with a mathematical possibility, they will continue to dream of a late season miracle. Geelong had a chance to keep the pressure on the top four and squeeze into 3rd or fourth with a late season charge of their own. Sadly it was not to be for the Cats and despite a good opening to the match, Adelaide kicked a late first quarter goal and dominated through much of the second and third terms to set up a twenty-four point lead going into the final change. Geelong threw everything at the home side in the last period and got within eight, yet Adelaide kicked another goal and ran the clock effectively over the final five minutes to professionally ice the game. Geelong did well in the clearances yet failed to use their possession well enough at times and made too many defensive errors. Adelaide were stunning in attack and defended bravely during the Cats more bright periods in the game. Tom Lynch, Josh Jenkins and Taylor Walker were the difference for the Crows around the half-forward line. They provided powerful targets and the inside men hit them regularly. Despite looking good early, the Cats lost their way in this area and even though Tom Hawkins played well up front, they never really hit targets on a regular basis. Final Score Adelaide 16 16 112 Geelong 14 13 97
