Wallabies to wear indigenous strip against England

By Scott Pryde / Expert

The Wallabies will wear their indigenous strip once again on this year’s Spring Tour, with Rugby Australia confirming it will be used against England at Twickenham.

The Test, which will be played on November 24 and is the final match on the Wallabies 2018 Spring Tour, following matches against Wales and Italy.

The indigenous jersey was first worn by the Wallabies in last year’s win over the All Blacks at Suncorp Stadium, but hasn’t been used since. It’s thought it will be used in one Test per year from this point onwards.

Michael Hooper said it was a special moment to run out in the jersey.

“It is an absolute privilege to wear the gold jersey every time you get to represent your country on the Rugby field and having the opportunity to wear the Indigenous design has a special significance,” said Hooper.

“The whole team was really honoured to run out in the Indigenous jersey last year to recognise not only the role of Indigenous players in the Wallabies throughout history but as a broader recognition of Indigenous culture and its importance in our country.

“I was pleased that we were able to play in a way that was fitting of the occasion in Brisbane last year and we are very keen to come up with a strong performance again in London at the end of our tour.”

Before heading to Europe to round out the season, the Wallabies will play the third and final Bledisloe Cup match in Japan against the All Blacks. It’s their next assignment on October 27, with the squad for all four matches expected to be named tomorrow.

i am old school and love the old green and gold.. circa 78-91.. it's my rose-coloured glass looking back view.. some of the jerseys that the aru has chosen/designed since 93 have been absolute shockers.. i like the aboriginal inspired jersey but i do not want it to become our permanent jersey. i would love for us to go back to a solid gold number with a green colour .. like the maroons are doing this year... why they ever went to red i have no idea.. some over paid marketing dweeb who thought lets change to red would be a good idea..

The jersey looks great! Surely every young Aussie would dream of wearing one.

i love the haka.. there is a huge difference for me between haka and an aboriginal inspired jersey, in my opinion.

It’s only political if you make it political. To most reasonable people it’s just acknowledging our past. No different to what the All Blacks do every game.

i like the jersey. i am a bit torn though as to when it should be worn. i am huge believer that politics should not be involved in sport.

Yeah, I agree actually. Odd choice to wear it away when it is only worn once a year.
