Cruel blow for Socceroos as Arzani suffers suspected ACL tear in Celtic debut

By News / Wire

Socceroos youngster Daniel Arzani has suffered a knee injury during his first-team debut for Celtic, while Tom Rogic scored in their Scottish Premiership win.

Australian wonderboy Daniel Arzani has been taken from the field on a stretcher due to a knee injury just 20 minutes into his first-team debut for Scottish giants Celtic.

Celtic coach Brendan Rogers brought Arzani on as a 57th-minute substitute in their Scottish Premiership clash at Dundee before the teen went down off the ball clutching his knee.

The 19-year-old attacker’s injury left the Hoops a man down for the remainder of the match, which they won 5-0 with his national teammate Tom Rogic opening the scoring on 20 minutes.

Arzani will almost certainly miss the Socceroos’ matches against South Korea on November 17 in Brisbane and against Lebanon in Sydney three days later, however, Hoops manager Brendan Rodgers appeared hopeful immediately after the match that Arzani’s injury was not too serious.

“Arzani is a great boy and it’s unfortunate he picked up the injury with a run in the game,” he said.

“I think his knee just sort of gave way and he felt it a bit unstable.

“He was taking the applause on the way out, so I’m not sure how sore it was. I don’t think it was killing him.”

However, The Daily Telegraph’s Tom Smithies reported that Arzani may have torn his ACL – ruling him out for virtually an entire year.

Rodgers was very complimentary of Arzani’s impact in his brief cameo and said a scan would be required on Thursday to confirm the extent of the injury.

“He certainly is happy to take the ball, he has confidence, he’s a Celtic player in terms of, he wants to beat people and wants to be aggressive,” he said of Arzani.

Rogic celebrated his 150th appearance for the Hoops with a wonderful opener before further goals from Scott Sinclair, from the spot, James Forrest and striker Odsonne Edouard had the points secured by the interval.

Australian pair Oliver Bozanic and Ben Garrucio played the 90 minutes for Hearts in their fiery 0-0 Edinburgh derby against Hibernian, who had Socceroos stalwart Mark Milligan and recent national team addition Martin Boyle in action.

Hibernian boss Neil Lennon and Hearts goalkeeper Zdenek Zlamal were both floored by missiles during the chaotic game, although both recovered after receiving treatment.

Elsewhere, Rangers drew 1-1 at Ibrox with Kilmarnock, Aberdeen cruised past Hamilton 3-0, St.Johnstone won 1-0 at Livingston while St. Mirren lost 2-0 to Motherwell.

Arzani and rogic are easily our most skilled players for the Roos They are entitled to make their own choices in life , but as a Socceroos fan I would like to see them progress to a tougher level to progress their own game. their choice to play in Scotland is based on their lack of ambition rather then lack of talent I believe. Rogic doesn’t seem to possess the drive that saw Craig Jonson, Viduka and kewell get to the epl Rogic could be a mid table epl player at a club like wolves or palace etc if rogic made his agent chased that path McClaren will do what Scott McDonald did and make a career in Scotland because the money is better then A league . Let’s hope Arzani recovers and gets some game time or gets another loan .

Therefore place the emphasis of your comments here and other posts squarely on the decision making process of the players in question and, perhaps more importantly recognising this is the level they are capable of playing at. The SPL should not be in question....what is not being widely accepted is that this is where our talent pool seems to relate over the years. The rose coloured glasses need to come off, and the narrative should be on what are we developing here before they head overseas.

Stu Why are the Aussie’s in Scotland, good money( can’t blame them ). very easy competition relative to Europe and the A league and no language barriers . If rogic had some ambition he would try to follow Mooy through the the championship to the epl By the way my relos are Scottish, love thr country, enjoy their football, but realise it’s not very good in the big scheme of things .

Kangas.....looks like you are saying others made the decision that he will go to Celtic. Not so, he had a choice of two clubs and Celtic was his choice. Nice to see a host of other Australian players plying their trade in the SPL.....why is this so?

Rubbish news at such a vital time in his career. Fingers crossed it's not as bad as first feared and we can see him back shortly.

Chris and Docker. What i mean is that he was doing great at Melbourne City and if he stayed there he would of stayed consistent with game time. Might have still torn his ACL but will have still been on track

Staying in Australia would have meant more game time though in a harder competition then the woeful spl Celtic has been a terrible decision for him , this just compounds it . A shame for Arzani in many ways Time to get Tom Rogic back and see if he can star again in the A league amongst better opponents

Yeah, because staying in Australia would prevent the lad tearing his ACL. Great advice there!

Brilliant advice. I'm sure Arzani will turn to you to plot his next move.
