Coen Hess starstruck by McGuire at Cowboys

By News / Wire

After suffering a form slump, North Queensland back-rower Coen Hess must now overcome a serious case of being “starstruck” following Test lock Josh McGuire’s Cowboys arrival.

Hess has already been challenged by Cowboys prop Matt Scott to recapture his 2017 form which propelled him from the North Queensland bench to State of Origin honours after an underwhelming NRL season.

Hess’ disappointing display reflected the Cowboys’ plight as they narrowly missed collecting the 2018 wooden spoon and hung on to finish 13th.

The 22-year-old said his confidence had already been boosted for 2019 after earning a three-year contract extension that will keep him at the Cowboys until the end of 2022.

Now Hess just has to get his head around playing alongside McGuire, who has bolstered the Cowboys pack since arriving from Brisbane on a four season deal.

“You look around at training and in a way get starstruck,” Queensland representative Hess said of McGuire.

“I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to play with him in the Maroons.

“You can see he has taken it upon himself to make himself known within the club.

“You really love having guys like Moose (McGuire) in your team.

“He’s a guy who is a real competitor and hates losing. That’s what every club wants and needs.”

Hess has played five games for the Maroons and 59 NRL matches since making his senior debut as a 19-year-old in 2015.

He finally nailed down a Cowboys starting spot in 2018 but only showed flashes of last year’s brilliance, scoring seven tries from 23 games while averaging 99m and 32 tackles.

Hess is ready to reclaim his mojo and reward the Cowboys’ faith after securing the new deal he hopes will help make him a one club player.

“It (new deal) is a step in right direction for sure,” Hess said.

“By the time I am finished (new deal) I will be 26 so hopefully I sign one more contract and that will be me done.

“But in saying there is a long time between now and then. I have got four years now to really cement myself in the team and continue to improve.”

Hess hopes to be involved in North Queensland’s pre-season games against Gold Coast Titans on the Sunshine Coast on February 23 and Melbourne at Mackay on March 1.

I think the coach had a lot to do with Hess' drop in form last season. He changed Hess' game from a 30 minute high impact player that he was in 2017, turning him into a 80 minute grafter last season and he scared nobody in that mould.

Have you watched the video ? Took him front on at ball level..McGuire wasn’t anywhere near his back..you haven’t had a clue on this incident from the outset.. Watch it..it definitely is a contact drill...where’s the dog shot ?

That explains why I clearly remember Ese’ese. Cheers. It may have been a nothing story but it speaks volumes for McGuire's lack of character to take a cheap shot in a light no contact training session against a teammate. I haven't heard any reports of it happening elsewhere. I think Hess would be well advised not to drop his guard or turn his back on McGuire at training.

Well put Reg. If Sam said he didn't grab the genitalia then it must have all been a hoax. You ask if Sam has done anything like that again and answer your own question with a dodgy answer, no. That incident was in 2013 and he hasn't been looking for nuts since but what about in 2016, charged for a chicken wing and later tripping. Then in 2017 it's a shoulder charge and a high tackle not to mention in 2018 a cannonball, elbow to the throat and a high tackle. I must admit though since the 2018 season finished Sam has been a good boy, but we have next year to come for more grubby acts from him.

How do I rate that BS, unfounded, unpenalsed, uncharged or even previously mentioned opinion? Have a guess - just like you did about Esse'ese. #CAPSLOCKarenotfacts

Sam said he actually only grabbed Willie's thigh and not his willy. Perhaps the target was not to the expected scale, perhaps it was a reckless accident but it WAS a bad look and definitely unnecessary. Has Sam ever done anything like that since? No. What about Sam Thaiday grabbing and torquing and twisting James Tamou's broken taped thumb? He didn't even attempt a tackle. He just wanted to injure him and get him out of the game. How do you rate that? Also the Broncos, primarily McGuire, Gillett, Thaiday and Blair were trained to grab a players jersey and fall across the back of their legs in an effort to injure the player and force them out of the game with a ankle sprain or knee injury. How do you rate that also?

What? Because it was Funaki instead of Ese’ese? The player was still blindsided and not expecting a full contact shot. No McGuireis a grub and there have been plenty of on-field examples of his grubby tactics, particularly for QLD in SOO which is why he has been targeted by the NSW forwards.

I'll take your word for it Emcie but he sure had a head like Ese’ese from memory. He hit his own player when the play was over and the player had relaxed. It was WAY over the top and from memory it was from behind but either way he was blindsided. Coward play from a true grub.

Hey Reg, what about Sam's squirrel grip on Will Chambers? He copped a two week holiday for grabbing a bag of nuts very, very close to an area on someone else that John Hopoate probed and received a twelve week break for.

Ok, I'll play field 2 if you want to shift the posts that far. Roberts was at his worst when playing for your mob. Lodge- Wests Tigers. A couple of years in Brisbane and they're both either repping or being considered. You wanna stay off field about players actions from years ago? Tricky Trindle, Sutton is a Bra Boy. Who was Ado Carr contracted too when he was locked up? Where's Craig Field the days? Russell Crowe dressing those boys up in Armani suits in the pure definition of polishing a turd. On the field, again, I'll offer the entire Brisbane pack judicial history against your one No. 13. You may find half a dozen incidents in total for a couple of 250 - 300 gamers. How many weeks did Sam spend on the sideline this year alone? Emcie has answered your question above but don't the facts get in the way if a good CAPS LOCK!!

It wasn't Ese'ese, it was a reserve grader named Funaki, and he wasn't hit in the back, it was a straight on tackle. There was nothing in it apart from Funaki getting grumpy, just a nothing story on a slow news day.

I remember seeing the footage on the news. It WAS Herman Ese’ese. If you say it was someone else then who was it? The only other person with a "melon" like that on the Broncos team is Joe Ofahengaue and it WASN'T him. As for Sam Burgess ((who was cleared of being the player involved in the Roosters employee scam to entrap him) what else had he been accused of off-field? Now let's compare his record with Matt Lodge and James Roberts shall we? And Sam has never thaken a cheap shot at his own team mate on or off the field. As for grub records about your Sam, Sam Thaiday? Torquing and wrenching James Tamou's broken ans taped thumb with no intention of making a tackle just injuring the player. What a hero!

Good story but it wasn't Esse Esse. Let's compare judicial records of your boy Sam before we start tossing the word Grub around.

A couple of years ago I thought Hess was the next big thing but times change as we have seen. Players apparently are media coached by their clubs to make sense when interviewed. After reading some of Hess's comments he needs more training. Like McGuire has taken it upon himself to make himself known to team mates??? I thought that is what any new person in a workplace would do. He's a real competitor and hates losing??? Well, that's the common denominator in any team sport. To say he is starstruck is somewhat over the top considering he has played with far superior players than McGuire. Hess may not be the brightest light in the room but has the potential to be one bloody good footballer.

Hess has played 5 games for QLD in origin which at 22 yrs of age which is FAR better than Josh "grub" McGuire had achieved at the same age. Try to judge apples with apples. Which is hard when McGuire is a lemon.
