Martin faces AFL scrutiny on two fronts

By Roger Vaughan / Wire

Richmond star Dustin Martin is in double trouble from the AFL after losing his cool in the loss to GWS.

He will come under video scrutiny for a hit well off the ball in the second term of Saturday’s clash at Giants Stadium.

The incident cost the Tigers a free kick and a goal.

Separately, the AFL could ask Martin to explain a couple of incidents where he flipped the bird to an opponent and also imitated snorting drugs.

The speculation is that the drugs sledge was directed at Shane Mumford, who was suspended for the opening two games this season after a video emerged of him snorting white powder.

At worst, Martin could be suspended for the off-the-ball hit and also fined for the gestures.

It means a worrying Monday for the Tigers, who have lost their last two games and could be without their Big Four for next Saturday’s away game against Port Adelaide.

They have already lost Alex Rance for the rest of the season with a knee reconstruction, while Jack Riewoldt has a wrist injury.

Captain Trent Cotchin also hurt his hamstring in the GWS loss and now Martin might also be sitting out the Power clash.

GWS tagger Matt de Boer sat on Martin, restricting him to 15 disposals, and clearly the attention did not impress the Richmond midfield ace.

Tigers coach Damien Hardwick was also frustrated and wants the umpire to keep a closer watch on tagging tactics.

“Protect the ball-carrier, is what I’m saying. Don’t get me wrong, De Boer did a terrific job, but geez. I’m certainly frustrated,” he said.

“I’d be interested to see what the umpiring fraternity says about it.”

Bringing the game into disrepute? How's doing a massive coke line and then being given the all-clear to play? A police investigation on Mumford and his coke source should have been the right thing to do. Mumford was running his mouth against Dusty and then copped some in return, that's fair game.

the snort was in bad taste the finger was just him responding to Mumford, who has admitted he was going red hot at him with his mouth. does that bring the game into disrepute? he should have given Kelly the finger for acting like a pork chop when he ghosted in and kicked the easiest goal ever. .. some big heads running around at Spotless. some in the crowd, too. that, i welcome, there was a bit of to and from, it was a healthy crowd who were very engaged.

suck it up Dusty and ask Joel what it's like, week in week out. I'm ok with you whacking a bloke but the personal jibes and gestures were out of line, cop your whack and come back better than ever, cheers, Cats supporter..

Dusty needs to grow up and start acting like a man. He has the talent just let his skills do the talking. Take a leaf out of Shannon Hearns book. If you are going to act like a thug you deserve what you get no matter how good you are. A one Mr Gaffe learnt the hard way for that one uncharacteristic strike.

The dirty elbow behind play is two weeks MINIMUM. If De Boer had of dropped Martin with an elbow behind the play the AFL would throw the book at him. In a week where Liam Picken retired due to concussion, we can't have players being laid out by elbows 50m off the ball. Jumper punches where getting one week suspensions in 2017. On top of that, Martin has brought the game into disrepute waving middle fingers, making a drug reference. I'd like to see Martin receive a severe fine for bringing the game into disrepute.

If I was dusty I would be clocking a few of our guys. They stand around and watch him getting bullied. Where is the spirit and leadership? Now... segue... when will someone who pushes someone into a contest be cited. That was a weak act that opened Rioli up to be cut in half. It happened to Howe last year - one of our guys pushed him Duty of care etc - needs to be eradicated ASAP
